Brežice is the town of the Čatež thermal spa, but there's more: town rights since 1353, a Renaissance castle with the Posavje Museum, the Water Tower, and Bizeljsko wine cellars a few kilometres away. It has 6,934 people and heads a municipality of 24,412 and 109 settlements (SURS, 1 January 2026); in 2025 it logged 227,511 arrivals, 92% of its region.

    How I would do it

Brežice is usually seen only as the spa town, and I think that's a mistake. I'd stay at Čatež with children, but give a morning to the castle and the Water Tower and an afternoon to the Bizeljsko cellars.

    1. 01 Most beautiful

Baroque painting in the Knights' Hall

Count Ignac Maria Attems had the hall decorated with scenes from Greek and Roman mythology. Posavje.com calls it a unique example of baroque secular painting in Slovenia.

    What I would book ahead

A small town with a lot of visitors

SURS counts 6,934 people in Brežice itself at the start of 2026 and 24,412 in the wider municipality, spread over 109 settlements. In 2025 the municipality recorded 227,511 arrivals and 712,297 overnight stays, 92% of all arrivals in the region, Posavje. The spa accounts for nearly all of that, which tells you how the town’s tourism works. The tourist board also gives it the platinum Slovenia Green Destination label.

Posavje.com explains that the name comes from brežec, the bank, because the town grew on a rocky spur above the old, now dry bed of the River Sava. A document of 1353 confirms its town rights.

Brežice Castle and the Posavje Museum

Brežice Castle is the biggest building in town. According to the Posavje Museum, it was rebuilt in the mid-1500s after an earlier castle burned in 1515 in the great peasant revolt, and the Attems family later turned it into a home. Count Ignac Maria Attems had the Knights’ Hall painted with mythological scenes, a baroque room that now hosts concerts. The Posavje Museum has been inside since 1949, with exhibitions on the peasant revolts, the region’s Protestants and the 20th century.

The museum also looks after the town’s Water Tower, which hosts exhibitions. Museum entry is €6, or €14 if you add the tower.

    The Čatež thermal spa

A few kilometres away, where the Krka meets the Sava, lies Čatež ob Savi, home to Terme Čatež. The complex bills itself as the largest water park in Central Europe, with over 12,000 m² of thermal water, an outdoor summer riviera and an indoor one open all year. The Attems counts built the first hotel in 1925.

    Vineyards and castles nearby

To the north, Bizeljsko is wine country, with its repnice, caves dug into quartz sand that the tourist board describes as cellars with 200 years of tradition. In the Orlica hills, Pišece Castle reopened in September 2026 after almost two decades of restoration, according to the museum. It has an English landscape park with Slovenia’s tallest sequoia and opens Thursday to Sunday, 10:00 to 16:00.

    How I’d plan Brežice

With a family, base yourself at Čatež and set aside a morning for the castle. Without children, I’d sleep in town, take the museum slowly and drive up to Bizeljsko in time for a tasting. If you’re into castles in Slovenia, Pišece and Brežice fit comfortably into the same day.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Brežice and choose by the reviews.
