    6 km, flat

Lake Bled is a glacial lake 2,120 m long and 1,080 m wide, with Slovenia's only natural island in the middle and the castle above it. A flat 6 km path runs right round, the water reaches 25°C in summer and only rowing and electric boats are allowed, according to the Bled tourist board. The best of it is the walk, the pletna to the island and the Ojstrica viewpoint.

    My checklist before setting off

    What I would do

If you've only got a morning, I'd walk the loop anticlockwise from the town so the island and castle stay in front of you, and break off for Ojstrica on the west shore before heading back.

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      The island in the middle

The island, more than 500 m from the nearest shore, is 170 m long and topped by a Baroque church. You get there by pletna, hired rowing boat or electric boat.

    2. 02 My tip

The postcard view is from Ojstrica

The classic shot of the lake is taken from Ojstrica, a 611 m hill about 20 minutes' steep climb from Velika Zaka on the western shore.

    3. 03 Worth the splurge

Swim in the lake's own thermal water

Thermal springs of at least 20°C rise on the eastern shore. The Grand Hotel Toplice pool uses the water as it comes, at 22°C, and two other hotels heat it up.

    4. 04 To save money

The loop is free and flat

Walking round the lake costs nothing. It's 6 km with no hills and plenty of benches, and in summer a free bus, the Bled Bus, runs round the lake and nearby.

      Bled
    5. 05 Getting there

Bohinj, the wilder lake to the west

If you like your water wilder, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia's largest natural lake, lies to the west inside Triglav National Park.

      Bled to Bohinj

    Walking round Lake Bled

It’s 6 flat kilometres with benches along the way. I’d set off from the town on the east shore and follow the south side to Mlino, where pletna boats leave and you see the island at close range. At Velika Zaka, the western tip, is the turning for the viewpoints, and the way back along the north shore runs beneath the castle rock and the Grajsko kopališče bathing area.

In summer the free Bled Bus runs round the lake and its surroundings, and you can always hire a bike or ride in a fijaker, the carriage of Bled’s coachmen. At Christmas the promenade fills with lights and stalls for the Winter Fairytale, which opens on 27 November in its 2026-2027 edition.

    Pletnas, boats and the island

Only rowing and electric boats are allowed on the lake. The classic way across is the pletna, a 7 m flat-bottomed boat that an oarsman rows standing up with two oars, a technique very much Bled’s own. There are 23 on the lake and their origins go back to 1590. Being a pletnar was a job handed down from father to son from the days of Maria Theresa, and a handful of families still keep it going.

They board in front of Hotel Park, at Mlino and at Velika Zaka. What there is to do on Bled Island, with its 99 steps and wishing bell, is on its own page. The cheaper alternative is to hire a rowing boat and do the work yourself, and there’s also an electric boat line from the centre with a published timetable.

    Viewpoints over the lake

To see the whole lake you need to climb a little. The Ojstrica viewpoint, at 611 metres, is about 20 minutes uphill from Velika Zaka and has a bench at the top with the postcard view, island in front of castle and the Karawanks behind. Mala Osojnica and Velika Osojnica, a bit higher, ask for more effort and give an even wider panorama. From the other side, Bled Castle on its rock lets you look down on the lake without breaking a sweat.

    Swimming in Lake Bled

In summer the water gets up to 25°C and there are organised bathing areas along the shore. The one the Slovenian Tourist Board singles out is the castle lido, Grajsko kopališče. In winter the water can drop to 4°C and in very cold years the lake freezes over. People then skate or walk to the island, always at their own risk and only on thick ice.

Here’s a detail few visitors know. Thermal springs that never fall below 20°C rise along the eastern shore, and three hotels in town use them in their pools. Two heat the water and the Grand Hotel Toplice offers it at 22°C, just as it comes out. In 2026 that hotel is being completely renovated, so check its website to see whether it has reopened.

    When to visit Lake Bled

In July and August the lake is busy, especially in the middle of the day when the day trips arrive. To my mind Bled is at its best first thing and at sunset, and spring and autumn give the best balance of light, temperature and crowds. If you’re torn between the two, see Slovenia in spring and Slovenia in autumn. In summer, the Lights on the Lake night, with more than 10,000 candles on the water, is the other big date. If you’d like a quieter, wilder lake, carry on to Bohinj inside Triglav National Park.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Lake Bled and pick one that fits your day.

    What Lake Bled is like

The lake is what Bled is built around. It’s 2,120 metres long and 1,080 wide, and in places drops to about 30 metres, which makes it popular with divers. A tongue of the Bohinj glacier carved it out in the last ice age. A ridge of harder dolomite held out against the ice and became the island, and when the glacier retreated the water was trapped between the moraines and the hills of Straža, Grad, Mala Osojnica and Ojstrica. That was about 14,000 years ago.

Nineteen species of fish live in it, including carp, wels catfish and lake trout, and ducks and swans glide across the top. The local legend beats the geology. It says the lake was once a meadow where fairies danced, that the shepherds failed to fence off their dance floor and that the angry fairies flooded the valley, leaving only the rock where they could carry on dancing.
