Lake Bled from the Ojstrica viewpoint, with the island and its church in the centre, wooded shores and the Julian Alps beyond

The best time to visit Slovenia depends on the plan: June to September for lakes, mountains and the Vršič Pass; July and August for the coast, with a July average of 23.6°C at Portorož; December to March for skiing; and autumn for wine and fewer people. If I had to pick one month, I'd take September, though it's Ljubljana's wettest.

Best time to visit Slovenia: the quick answer

    Full read: 2 min

    • Lakes and mountains, June to September.
    • Coast in July and August; skiing December to March.
    • Autumn for wine and St Martin's Day, with fewer people.
    • My pick is September, though it's Ljubljana's wettest month.
    When I would go

I'd go in September: the lakes are still inviting, Vintgar and Bled Castle keep their long hours and the August crush has eased. I'd just pack a waterproof, because it's Ljubljana's wettest month.

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      Lakes from June to September

That's when Bled, Bohinj and Jasna are best on foot and by boat, and when Vintgar Gorge, open April to October, is in full swing. Bled Castle stays open until 8pm from April to October.

    2. 02 My tip

      August, the busiest month

In summer the Julian Alps come close to overload, and in May 2026 the Tourist Board reported paid parking limited to 90 spaces at Vršič. If August is your only option, start early.

    3. 03 Getting there

      Winter driving means winter kit

From 15 November until 15 March, and whenever there's snow or ice, winter equipment is compulsory according to the FCDO. If you're driving to ski, budget for it.

    4. 04 Most beautiful

      Harvest-time autumn

November brings St Martin's Day, the new wine festival, with celebrations in Maribor, Koper, Brda and Velenje on the official calendar. For me it's the best season for the wine regions.

    My ranking, scored

The months I'd choose, best to worst

My score blends average weather from the official statistics (SURS, 2001-2010), what's open each month according to official websites, and how busy it gets. It's my opinion, aimed at a first trip mixing lakes, mountains, caves and coast.

    1. September

An average of 15.6°C in Ljubljana, everything open and fewer people than August. The only catch is that it's the capital's wettest month, at 179 mm.

      9.2 out of 10

    2. June

Very long days, a 20.2°C average in Ljubljana and the lakes already in season. Higher peaks can still have snow.

      9.0 out of 10

    3. July

The warmest month, 21.9°C in Ljubljana and 23.6°C at Portorož. Perfect for the coast and the Soča, but Bled gets crowded.

      8.4 out of 10

    4. May

16.6°C in Ljubljana, waterfalls in full flow and fewer visitors. Vintgar has been open since April.

      8.1 out of 10

    5. December

Cold (a 1.3°C average in Ljubljana), but with the capital's festive December and the start of the ski season.

      7.6 out of 10

Lakes and mountains: June to September

If you’re coming for Bled, Bohinj, the Julian Alps and the Soča, as most people are, the good window runs from June to September. Vintgar Gorge opens from April to October and Bled Castle keeps its long hours, 8am to 8pm, over the same months. The official statistics give a 20.2°C average in Ljubljana in June and 15.6°C in September, with the Alps a good deal cooler, as June at Rateče averages just 16°C. I’d choose September, for the light and the thinner crowds, and I explain why in Slovenia in September.

    The coast: July and August

For the sea, heat is what counts. Portorož has the highest averages of the official stations, 23.6°C in July and 22.5°C in August. For the water itself I’d need an official reading of sea temperature, and I haven’t got one, so that number stays blank. The summer problem is different, the pressure on the Julian Alps, which the Tourist Board spelled out in May 2026 when it announced paid parking capped at 90 spaces on the Vršič Pass. If August is your month, get to Bled early and save the coast for the afternoons.

Skiing and Christmas: December to March

The Tourist Board counts some 230 km of pistes and 12 main resorts, with Mariborsko Pohorje the largest by length and Kanin, above Bovec, the highest, with natural snow well into spring. Opening and closing dates for 2026-27 weren’t on any official site when I looked, and I’d rather not guess. What does have a date is the Ptuj carnival, 3 to 9 February 2027, and the ski flying at Planica, 18 to 21 March 2027. If you’re driving, remember winter equipment is compulsory. It’s all in Slovenia in winter.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Bled before prices climb.

    Autumn, for the wine

Autumn is my second favourite. October still averages 11.5°C in Ljubljana and Vintgar stays open until the end of the month, while November brings St Martin’s Day, the new wine festival, celebrated in Maribor, Koper, Brda and Velenje according to the official calendar. The high mountains get trickier, but the wine regions are at their best.

    The weather in numbers

The averages I use come from the official SURS table for 2001-2010, an old series but fine for comparing months. January is the coldest month in Ljubljana at 0.4°C and July the warmest. The full station-by-station table, rainfall included, is in Slovenia weather, and each month has its own page if you want detail, starting with Slovenia in January. By season, as well as winter, there are Slovenia in spring and Slovenia in autumn.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Bled and choose by the reviews.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Bled before prices climb.

Best time to visit Slovenia: questions and answers

What is the best month to visit Slovenia?

June to September for lakes and mountains, which is what most people come for. I'd choose September, with everything open and fewer crowds, though it's Ljubljana's wettest month.

When is the weather best in Slovenia?

July and August are the warmest months, averaging 21.9°C and 20.8°C in Ljubljana and 23.6°C and 22.5°C at Portorož, according to official statistics for 2001 to 2010.

When is the best time to ski in Slovenia?

December to March. The Tourist Board says Kanin, the highest resort, offers skiing on natural snow well into spring. Dates for the 2026-27 season hadn't been published when I checked.

Is Slovenia worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you're after skiing, Ljubljana's festive December or the Ptuj carnival. It's not the season for lakes and mountain walks, and you'll need winter equipment in the car.

What is the rainiest month in Slovenia?

It varies by area. In Ljubljana it's September (179 mm on average); at Rateče in the Alps, August (172 mm). These are official 2001-2010 averages.

Is August a good time to visit Slovenia?

For the coast and rivers, yes, but it's the most pressured month in the Julian Alps. In May 2026 the Tourist Board reported new measures at Vršič, with 90 paid parking spaces, because of summer overcrowding.
