Kostel Castle stands on a rock above the River Kolpa in southern Slovenia, and with its market settlement it forms, according to Visit Kočevsko, the country's second-largest castle complex and the only one of its kind still lived in. A bastion against the Ottomans, it burned after the 1809 revolt against the French and has been under restoration since the 1990s; works were announced from 15 June 2025.
I like Kostel Castle more for its setting than for what's left inside. I'd go up late in the day, when the Kolpa valley darkens, and ring the information centre first to check whether the works are over.

Bookings I would make
The castle and its settlement
What sets Kostel Castle apart is that it isn’t alone. A small market settlement grew up beside it, and the whole ensemble is, according to Visit Kočevsko, the second-largest castle complex in Slovenia. That settlement is still inhabited, which the area’s tourism office says makes it unique in the country. For me that’s the most striking thing, homes still in use inside a medieval enclosure.
Why it mattered
Because of where it sits. Perched above the Kolpa and hard to reach, it was a serious obstacle in the defence against Ottoman raids. It was also part of the chain of beacons lit from hilltop to hilltop to raise the alarm quickly.
Its best-remembered moment came in 1809. The people of Kostel attacked the French soldiers quartered in the castle, beginning the armed phase of what Visit Kočevsko calls the largest revolt against the French occupiers in Slovenia. The reprisal was to burn the castle down. A lower manor house was later built at the edge of the square, and it was destroyed in the Second World War.
Works, restoration and visiting
Since the 1990s work has gone into restoring part of its former appearance, and today’s municipality, Kostel, took both its name and its coat of arms from the castle. When it’s open, there’s an exhibition inside, guided tours that recreate medieval life, and cultural, music and food events. The views over the Kolpa river valley are, for me, the best part.
Watch the dates. Visit Kočevsko announced renovation works from 15 June 2025, with the castle closed until the end of that season. The castle’s own information centre opens in June from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00, and it’s worth phoning ahead.
The practical side, according to Visit Kočevsko’s listing, is simple. Entry is free, and there’s a car park, a motorhome area, a playground, wifi and access for people with reduced mobility. The address is Kostel 2, and information is available in Slovenian, Croatian, English and German. With free admission it’s one of the cheapest visits you can make in the area, and another reason not to skip it if you’re already in the valley. Bring decent shoes for walking the walls and the uneven ground around them.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Kostel on Expedia and filter by area before price.
Pairing it with the Kolpa
You’ll see the castle in an hour, so I’d pair it with a swim in the Kolpa, a look at the market settlement’s houses and an afternoon around Kočevje. Among the lesser-known castles in Slovenia, this is one of the most worth the drive.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Kostel Castle and pick one that fits your day.
