Zreče is the spa town at the gateway to Pohorje: Terme Zreče uses thermal water that rises at 34.5 °C and Pohorje peat around 10,000 years old, and the Rogla plateau, with skiing in winter and trails in summer, is a short drive away. It has 3,087 people and in 2025 its municipality logged 70,547 arrivals and 256,016 overnight stays.

    How I would do it

Zreče works as a two-in-one base: mountains by day and thermal water in the evening. I'd stay at least two nights at the spa, head up to Rogla in the morning and come back to the pools in the last of the light.

    The practical bit

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      Ten-thousand-year-old peat

Terme Zreče uses Pohorje peat, about 10,000 years old, from mid-mountain bogs deep in the forest, in compresses and baths, according to the tourist board.

    2. 02 Worth the splurge

Sleep at 7,000 m without moving

Rogla has six hotel rooms and a training room with reduced oxygen that simulate altitudes of up to 7,000 m for athletes.

    3. 03 My tip

      E-bikes from the spa

Zreče's new Outdoor Centre rents e-bikes and runs guided outings through the Pohorje forests.

    4. 04 Getting there

      Rogla just above

From Zreče it's a short drive up to the Rogla plateau, a ski resort in winter and a hiking and biking base in summer.

      A baroque Knights’ Hall

Down from Pohorje towards the Drava, Slovenska Bistrica has a castle first recorded in 1313, now a museum, with Flurer’s 1721 frescoes in the Knights’ Hall.

    Bookings I would make

Terme Zreče: thermal water and peat

The internationally accredited spa relies on three natural healing factors. The acratothermal water rises at 34.5 °C and is rich in calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate. Pohorje peat, around 10,000 years old, is used in compresses and baths. And there’s the mid-mountain climate, with fresh forest air.

The medical side is strong on rehabilitation after injuries and operations on the knee, shoulder, hip and spine, and on rheumatic conditions. For leisure there are thermal pools, a Sauna Village, the Forest Water Park for children and massages with Pohorje herbs. The new Outdoor Centre rents e-bikes and runs guided outings.

    Rogla, a short drive away

A short drive away lies Rogla, a plateau of forest, peat bog and lakes that’s a ski resort in winter and a base for walking and cycling in summer. The tourist board highlights its treetop walk and the Zlodejevo coaster. Rogla also has hotel rooms with reduced oxygen that simulate up to 7,000 m of altitude for athletes.

    Two nights in Zreče

I’d stay at least two nights, with a morning on Rogla and afternoons in the water. In winter, Zreče is a quieter alternative to sleeping up at the resort itself.

    Around Zreče

The tourist board suggests the Oplotnica gorge, Oplotnica manor, the castle on Mt Konjiška gora and Trebnik manor with its herbal gallery. Close by are Žiče Charterhouse and the space technology centre in Vitanje. The local dish is the Pohorje pot, created by the head chef of the hotel on Rogla, Darinka Orlačnik.

    Crafts and packages

The tourist board encourages visitors to discover Pohorje’s crafts, from basket weaving and wooden clogs to items in Pohorje stone, violin making, beekeeping and herbalism, and notes that locals take any excuse to bring out the accordion. Seasonal menus lean on Pohorje ingredients and traditional recipes. In summer Terme Zreče sells its Blue Holidays package, with half board, unlimited use of the thermal pools, local Vital dinners, the Sauna Village, activities for children and adults and a ride on Rogla’s Zlodejevo coaster.
