Ravne na Koroškem is worth a stop for its ironworking story, with Forma Viva steel sculptures around town and the heritage of the old steelworks, and for Prežihov Voranc, the writer whose memorial cottage stands at Preški vrh. It's a town of 7,157 people (SURS, 1 January 2026) in the Meža valley, below Uršlja gora, with Lake Ivarčko for a swim.

    How I would do it

Ravne isn't pretty in the classic sense, but it tells Koroška's industrial story well. I'd give it half a day, sculptures and steelworks first and Prežihov Voranc's cottage after, and pair it with the Mežica mine in the same valley.

What I would check before going

Ravne na Koroškem: the quick answer

    Full read: 2 min

    • A town of 7,157 in the Meža valley.
    • Iron history and Forma Viva steel sculptures.
    • Prežihov Voranc's house museum at Preški vrh.
    • Lake Ivarčko below Uršlja gora.

    The practical bit

Before you go to Ravne na Koroškem, this

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      A lake below the mountain

At the foot of Uršlja gora, Lake Ivarčko is a peaceful spot to spend an afternoon by the water, according to the tourist board.

    2. 02 Worth the splurge

      The writer's cottage

At Preški vrh above Kotlje, Prežihova bajta is the memorial museum dedicated to Lovro Kuhar, the writer known as Prežihov Voranc.

    3. 03 My tip

      Mountain biking at Poseka

Above the town lies the Poseka bike park, one of the places the tourist board recommends for cycling in Koroška.

    4. 04 Getting there

      The church on the summit

Uršlja gora, with St Ursula's Church on top, rises above Ravne and the Mislinja valley.

      Uršlja Gora

    Bookings I would make

A town in the Meža valley

According to SURS, Ravne has 7,157 residents and its municipality 11,179 on 1 January 2026, in 16 settlements. Over 2025 it recorded 4,130 arrivals and 12,726 overnight stays. The town sits in the Meža valley in Koroška, between Mežica and Slovenj Gradec, with Uršlja gora rising above it.

What to see of the iron tradition

Quite a lot. The tourist board highlights the Forma Viva iron sculptures dotted around town and the exhibitions on the steel industry. The preserved technical heritage of the old steelworks now serves as a gateway to the region’s cultural tourism, linking the industrial past with the present. The Koroška Central Library also holds collections that trace the town’s cultural development.

Prežihov Voranc and the literary tradition

At Preški vrh, above the village of Kotlje, stands Prežihova bajta, the memorial museum dedicated to Lovro Kuhar, the writer who signed his work Prežihov Voranc. The tourist board picks out this literary tradition as one of Ravne’s defining traits, alongside sport. For me it’s the visit with the most character in the area, a country cottage up on the hill.

    Water, bikes and Christmas

At the foot of Uršlja gora, Lake Ivarčko is a quiet place to swim or stroll. Above the town is the Poseka bike park, and the sports park has a pool for the rest of the year. In December Ravne fills with lights, with a Christmas market, music and performances on Mestni plato and Partizanska Street in the old town, and a Krampus show at the opening.

Uršlja gora and the K24 challenge

Above Ravne rises Uršlja gora, 1,699 m high according to Koroška tourism, with St Ursula’s Church on its summit. It’s part of the K24 challenge, which invites hikers to climb Koroška’s five highest peaks, Peca, Raduha, Olševa, Smrekovec and Uršlja gora itself, and it’s one of the easier ones to reach. For a longer walk, the Koroška Mountain Trail makes a 230 km loop through the Meža, Drava and Mislinja valleys, with huts along the way.

    Half a day in Ravne

I’d spend half a day in Ravne itself and combine it with the mine at Mežica, a few kilometres up the same valley, or with Slovenj Gradec. It’s a good way to see Koroška’s industrial side alongside its natural one, and in December the Christmas market adds a reason to come back.
