    What I would do

Whenever I can, I fit a first Sunday of the month in Ljubljana into the trip and give it all to museums. On other days I alternate one paid visit with something free, a trail, an open-air gallery or a waterfall with no ticket.

Free things to do in Slovenia, step by step

    1. Plan a first Sunday in Ljubljana

Most museums and galleries are free that day, as well as on 8 February and 3 December.

      First Sunday

    2. Add a free waterfall

Savica waterfall above Bohinj has been free since 2026, a good half-day out.

    3. Walk the marked trails

More than 10,000 km of signed paths cost nothing, and tap water is safe to refill your bottle.

      10,000 km

    My key points

Before you go to Slovenia, this

    1. 01 To save money

      First Sunday, free museums

According to Ljubljana's tourist board, most of the city's museums and galleries are free on the first Sunday of every month, and also on 8 February and 3 December.

      Ljubljana
    2. 02 Most beautiful

      Savica waterfall, no ticket

The Tourist Board reported in May 2026 that, under a new law, Savica waterfall is free. Vintgar, the Tolmin Gorges and Mostnica still charge.

    3. 03 Getting there

      Art in the street

Ljubljana's tourist board lists as free the street art of Metelkova, the open-air gallery on the Jakopič Promenade in Tivoli and the City Art Gallery.

    4. 04 My tip

      Trails and cycling

The Tourist Board counts more than 10,000 km of marked trails. The Parenzana, a 130 km cycle route along an old railway line, runs past the Piran salt pans.

      hiking in Slovenia

    Free museums in Ljubljana

According to Ljubljana’s tourist board, a good share of the capital’s galleries and museums open without charge on the first Sunday of every month, on 8 February, Slovenian Culture Day, and on 3 December. There’s also art you can see for nothing all year, the street art of Metelkova, the open-air gallery on the Jakopič Promenade in Tivoli Park and the City Art Gallery, plus spaces such as Vžigalica and the Tobačna cultural centre. And the old town, closed to motor traffic, costs nothing to explore on foot. What to see in the capital is in Ljubljana.

    Free waterfalls, trails and cycling

Among the measures for the Julian Alps reported by the Tourist Board in spring 2026 there’s good news for your wallet, because under a new law Savica waterfall is now free. Other sights in the area, such as Vintgar Gorge, the Tolmin Gorges and Mostnica Gorge, still charge. For walking, the country has more than 10,000 km of marked paths and 352 peaks over 2,000 m, according to the Tourist Board. By bike, the Parenzana runs 130 km from Trieste to Poreč, in Croatia, along the old railway line and past the Piran salt pans. Walking routes are in hiking in Slovenia.

    Free shuttles and transport

In some places the bus costs nothing, so that people leave the car behind. In winter Kranjska Gora has a free ski bus, and in summer Ankaran runs one to its beaches, according to the Tourist Board. In Bohinj, the Julian Alps Card for guests staying two nights or more includes the valley’s regular buses. In Bled, the summer of 2025 brought free buses around the lake ten times a day, a village route and a free shuttle linking Radovljica, Lesce and Bled from 1 July to 31 August, according to the Municipality of Bled via the Tourist Board; check whether they run again before you count on them.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Ljubljana on Expedia and filter by area before price.

    Tap water and other savings

Tap water is safe to drink, according to the Tourist Board, which adds that bars commonly serve it with coffee or wine and that on hot days many towns have public fountains. A refillable bottle saves quite a bit on a summer trip. The other money-saving tips are in Slovenia on a budget.

    What isn’t free

It’s worth not getting confused. Bled and Ljubljana castles, the Postojna caves, Predjama and Lipica all charge, and parking at the lakes is usually paid. What they cost is in prices in Slovenia.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Ljubljana and pick one that fits your day.
