Skiing in Slovenia, a country of small resorts close at hand

    Facts checked on
    Total pistes
    About 230 km
    By colour
    85 blue, 114 red, 27 black

Skiing in Slovenia means around 230 km of pistes (85 km blue, 114 km red and 27 km black) spread over small, family-friendly resorts, most near a town, according to the Slovenian Tourist Board. A shared season pass, Ski Pass Slovenia, works at most of them. The best known are Kranjska Gora, Vogel, Krvavec, Mariborsko Pohorje, Rogla and Cerkno.

    Is it worth it?

    It depends

It depends on what you want. For families, beginners and short breaks, yes, with resorts close to town and a shared pass; for big linked ski areas, it falls short.

    What I would book

    My view
    Sergio Lepone

To me Slovenia is skiing for families, learners and short breaks, not 300 km of linked runs. With kids or as a beginner, Kranjska Gora or Krvavec, with a ski school and a town close by; if you already ski well, Vogel, for the view from the top.

    My ranking, scored

The Slovenian resorts I'd choose, in order

My personal order, scored out of 10, for a British or Spanish skier coming for a few days: variety of runs, ease of access and what's around the slopes.

    1. Kranjska Gora

18 runs from Vitranc towards Planica, a World Cup slalom slope, gentle beginner terrain and an Alpine village with a free ski bus.

      8.9 out of 10

    2. Vogel

Slovenia's longest ski run and views over Lake Bohinj and Triglav. You go up by cable car from the valley.

      8.7 out of 10

    3. Mariborsko Pohorje

The resort with the most kilometres in Slovenia, 41.5 km, plus one of the longest floodlit runs in Europe for night skiing above Maribor.

      8.5 out of 10

    4. Krvavec

About 10 minutes from the airport and the nearest resort to Ljubljana. Ideal for a single day out from the capital.

      8.2 out of 10

    5. Cerkno

Named best ski resort in Slovenia several times, with modern lifts and a spa hotel at the bottom.

      7.9 out of 10

    6. Rogla

A Pohorje resort with a thermal spa close by in Zreče, handy if you want slopes and warm water in the same trip.

      7.7 out of 10

    My key points

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Getting there

Krvavec, ten minutes from the airport

The tourist board puts Krvavec about 10 minutes from Ljubljana airport and calls it the closest ski resort to the capital.

      Krvavec ski resort
    2. 02 Most beautiful

      Vogel, skiing above the lake

Above Lake Bohinj, Vogel has the longest ski run in Slovenia according to the tourist board, and the cable car comes with views of Triglav.

      Vogel
    3. 03 To save money

A free ski bus in Kranjska Gora

Kranjska Gora runs a free ski bus between its villages, and Bohinj is reached by direct train on the Jesenice to Nova Gorica line plus a ski bus.

    4. 04 My tip

Kanin, the highest, didn't open in 2025-26

The Soča Valley tourist board says the Slovenian side of Kanin did not operate in the 2025-26 season. Check before you book.

      Kanin ski resort

    Kilometres of piste, by colour

The tourist board counts around 230 km of pistes, 85 of them blue, 114 red and 27 black. There are four large resorts with more than 10 lifts, a handful of medium ones with 2 to 10, and small ones with one or two. Most make their own snow, which helps when the weather doesn’t. The biggest by distance is Mariborsko Pohorje, with 41.5 km, and it also has one of the longest floodlit runs in Europe. A season pass, Ski Pass Slovenia, works at nearly all of them.

Which Slovenian ski resort should you pick?

It depends what you’re after. For learning or skiing with children I’d go to Kranjska Gora, with 18 runs from Vitranc towards Planica, gentle slopes to start on and a World Cup slalom piste once you’ve found your feet. For skiing with a view, Vogel, above Lake Bohinj, with the longest run in the country. For a day trip from the capital, Krvavec, about 10 minutes from the airport. And to mix skiing with a thermal spa, Rogla or the Maribor side of the Pohorje.

Cerkno deserves a mention of its own, having been named the best resort in Slovenia several times. Then there’s Golte in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Kope on the Pohorje, Stari vrh and the Sorica plateau near Škofja Loka, and Velika planina, with 2.8 km of family piste on natural snow.

    Kanin, the highest resort

Kanin, above Bovec, is the highest resort in Slovenia and links across the border with Italy’s Sella Nevea. It’s known for holding natural snow well into spring and has a gondola climbing from Bovec at 436 m to 2,202 m. The catch is that the Soča Valley tourist board says the Slovenian side didn’t operate in the 2025-26 season, so I’d check it’s running before planning a trip around it.

    Cross-country and Nordic

Bohinj has about 70 km of cross-country trails when the snow is good, and the Pokljuka plateau hosts biathlon races. Planica, at the head of the Upper Sava Valley, is the country’s big Nordic centre, with its ski-flying hills.

    Getting to the slopes

The tourist board actively pushes public transport to the slopes, which I appreciate. Kranjska Gora has a free ski bus between its villages, and a direct train runs to Bohinj on the Jesenice to Nova Gorica line, with a ski bus up to the lifts. Winter also brings buses linking Ljubljana with Krvavec, Vogel and Kranjska Gora. If you’re driving, winter kit is mandatory between 15 November and 15 March, and at any time with snow or ice, as I explain in Slovenia in winter.

Dates and prices for the 2026-27 season weren’t published on the official sources I checked, so I don’t give them here. Each resort posts them on its own site before opening.

    Test yourself

    True or false?

    0/3 Pick before you peek.

    1. Slovenia has more kilometres of red runs than blue.

      See the answer

True. The tourist board gives 114 km of red against 85 km of blue and 27 km of black, about 230 km in all.

    2. Kranjska Gora is the resort with the most kilometres of pistes.

      See the answer

False. That's Mariborsko Pohorje, with 41.5 km, according to the tourist board.

    3. Kanin is Slovenia's highest ski resort.

      See the answer

True. It is, and it links with Italy's Sella Nevea, although the Slovenian side didn't run in the 2025-26 season.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can you ski in Slovenia?

Yes. There are about 230 km of pistes, four large resorts with more than 10 lifts and plenty of medium and small ones. Most have snowmaking, which stretches the season when natural snow is thin.

What is the best ski resort in Slovenia?

My shortlist is Kranjska Gora, Vogel, Mariborsko Pohorje, Krvavec, Cerkno and Rogla. The biggest by kilometres is Mariborsko Pohorje, with 41.5 km.

Is there one lift pass for all Slovenian resorts?

Ski Pass Slovenia is a shared season pass valid at most resorts in the country. For a few days' skiing, the individual resort pass is usually enough.

Which ski resort is closest to Ljubljana?

Krvavec, about 10 minutes from Ljubljana airport according to the tourist board. In winter there are buses from the capital to Krvavec, Vogel and Kranjska Gora.

Where can I go cross-country skiing in Slovenia?

Bohinj has around 70 km of cross-country trails when the snow is good, and the Pokljuka plateau hosts biathlon events. Planica has a Nordic centre too.

What do I need to drive to the slopes?

Between 15 November and 15 March, and on any snowy or icy day, you need winter equipment, which means winter tyres, or summer tyres with chains in the boot. On motorways you also need the DARS vignette. Your UK licence is valid.
