The Julian Alps, Triglav and the Soča valley lie to the north-west; Ljubljana sits in the centre; the Karst, its caves and the 47 km of coast are to the south-west, and Maribor, Ptuj and the Prekmurje plains to the east. Every number opens its guide.
The Goriška region is western Slovenia, right against Italy. It covers 2,325 km² with 13 municipalities and 117,783 people, and in 2025 it logged 621,023 tourist arrivals, according to SURS. It includes the Soča Valley with Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin, Nova Gorica, the Vipava and Brda wine valleys and the mining town of Idrija.
Goriška is what I'd suggest to anyone who's already been to Bled. I'd split it into two bases, Bovec or Kobarid for the Soča and the mountains, and Brda or the Vipava Valley for wine, with Idrija as a stop between them.

What the official sites leave out
01 Worth the splurge
Hiša Franko, in Kobarid
Ana Roš, named the world's best female chef in 2017, cooks in the Soča Valley using local produce and her own wine cellar.
With 3,052 residents, the municipality of Bovec logged 235,614 arrivals in 2025, seventh in the country. It's where the valley's outdoor agencies are based.
My personal order, scored out of 10, by what each place adds to a first trip through western Slovenia and how different it feels from the rest of the country.

What to see in Goriška, four landscapes
Goriška is one of SURS’s 12 statistical regions, with 13 municipalities, 398 settlements and 117,783 residents on 1 January 2026. In 2025 its visitors spent 1,491,187 nights there, most of them in the Soča Valley. It has no government of its own. What’s curious is that the tourist board splits it between three of its destinations. The Soča Valley and Cerkno go with the Alps; Nova Gorica, the Vipava and Brda with the Mediterranean and the Karst; and Idrija with Ljubljana. That mix sums the place up, running from the peaks of Kanin to the vineyards of Brda without leaving the region.
The Soča Valley
This is the region’s tourist heart. Bovec, with just 3,052 residents, logged 235,614 arrivals in 2025, seventh in Slovenia, and Kobarid and Tolmin add another 172,461. Here you’ll find the emerald river, the Great Gorge, the Boka, Kozjak and Virje waterfalls, the Tolmin Gorges and Kanin, the country’s highest ski area. There are more than 60 outdoor agencies and fly fishing is the only method allowed anywhere in the valley. In summer a hop-on hop-off bus lets you leave the car behind, and Camping Koren in Kobarid was the first in Slovenia with the EU Ecolabel. It’s all laid out in the Soča Valley guide.
The valley was also the Isonzo Front. The Kobarid Museum tells the story of the twelfth battle, among the biggest ever fought in the mountains; the Walk of Peace links the remains of the front down to the sea; and the memorial church at Javorca above Tolmin holds the European Heritage Label.
Nova Gorica and the Vipava Valley
Nova Gorica is the region’s largest town, with 12,950 people, and lives cheek by jowl with Italian Gorizia. In front of its station, Europe Square is shared by the two towns. Close by are Solkan’s railway bridge, with its huge stone arch over the Soča, and Mount Sabotin, with military caverns and a museum.
To the east opens the Vipava Valley, which has more native grape varieties than anywhere in Slovenia, Pinela, Zelen and Klarnica among them. It has the Renaissance manor of Zemono with a Michelin-starred restaurant, the walled village of Vipavski Križ, the springs of Vipava town and the Otlica natural window, plus some fine paragliding launches.
Goriška Brda is a range of vine-covered hills on the border, with Klet Brda, the country’s biggest winery, the Renaissance castle at Dobrovo, the Vipolže villa and the fortified village of Šmartno. The tourist board counts around 280 km of cycling routes and a cherry festival.
Idrija is a different story. Mercury turned up there in 1490, and since 2012 the mine has shared World Heritage status with Almadén in Spain. It also has the world’s oldest lace school still running, a UNESCO Global Geopark covering the whole municipality and the Wild Lake. And at Cerkno there’s the Franja Partisan Hospital, the Divje Babe cave where a Neanderthal flute about 60,000 years old turned up, and the laufarji, the wooden masks of its carnival.
Food in Goriška
Plenty. In the Soča Valley, Bovec and Tolminc cheeses with protected status, frika, Kobarid štruklji and Bovec krafi. In Idrija, žlikrofi, which carry the EU’s Traditional Speciality Guaranteed label. In Brda, frtalja, a herb omelette, and cherries. And in Kobarid, Ana Roš’s Hiša Franko. Wash any of it down with a glass of Brda Rebula or a Vipava Pinela.
With a week, three nights in Bovec or Kobarid for the Soča, one in Idrija or Cerkno and three in Brda or the Vipava. With less time, I’d stick to the Soča plus a wine day. And if you’re coming in from Italy via Gorizia, I’d start in Nova Gorica and work my way up the river; from Tarvisio, the Predel Pass drops you straight into the upper Soča near Log pod Mangartom.
