Dobrna is Slovenia's oldest spa still in operation, according to the Slovenian Tourist Board: its water has been used for healing since 1403. The village has 580 people and its municipality 2,347 (SURS, 1 January 2026), 16 km north of Celje, among forests below Paški Kozjak. In 2025 visitors stayed more than five nights on average.

    How I would do it

Dobrna is for a proper rest, with forest walks between treatments. I'd follow the Loka trail up to the ruins of Snake Castle and the 450-year-old mill, and try the walnut bread made by the village women.

    My notes on Dobrna

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      A mill that still grinds

In the Valley of Mills, by the Temnjaški vrelec stream, a mill of some 450 years still works, near the ruins of Snake Castle.

    2. 02 Worth the splurge

      Arnika's walnut bread

The Arnika Dobrna rural women's association cooks from their grandmothers' recipes, and their walnut bread is the speciality the tourist board recommends.

    3. 03 To save money

      Bikes for hire

Five marked cycle routes leave Dobrna, and bikes can be hired at the spa, the tourist information centre and other spots; Hotel Triglav also rents e-bikes.

    4. 04 Getting there

      Celje 16 km away

The town of the counts, with its Old Castle and the Roman remains of Celeia, lies about 16 km south of Dobrna.

      Celje

    A spa village near Celje

According to SURS, Dobrna has 580 residents and its municipality 2,347 on 1 January 2026, spread over 11 settlements. Over the year before, it logged 21,186 arrivals and 115,386 overnight stays, more than five nights per visitor. The tourist board places it about 16 km north of Celje, 13 km from Velenje and 28 km from Laško, and Dobrna holds the bronze level of the Slovenia Green Destination scheme. The spa also holds the EU Ecolabel.

    Slovenia’s oldest working spa

The Celts and Romans already knew its warm springs, but the date that counts is 1403, when the water began to be used for healing, as it still is. That’s why the tourist board presents Terme Dobrna as Slovenia’s oldest spa in operation, with more than 610 years behind it. In 1814 the estate passed to Baron Kajetan Dienersberg, and in the early 20th century the spa was famous for its guests, among them the writer Karl May in 1907.

Today it has thermal pools, saunas, a massage and beauty centre and a diagnostics and rehabilitation centre. Children have a mini club with workshops, so parents can take their treatments in peace.

    The park and the surroundings

The spa park is linked to the centre by an avenue of chestnut trees more than 200 years old, and it’s home to a white poplar that’s the third-thickest known of its species in Slovenia. In the Valley of Mills, by the Temnjaški vrelec stream, a mill about 450 years old still works, near the ruins of Snake Castle. The Šumej homestead at Brdce keeps a black kitchen that shows how people lived three hundred years ago, and collector Jože Polenek displays around 10,000 old objects in a three-storey house.

    Walking, cycling and eating

Ana’s Trail passes the Šumej homestead and includes a forest section from the Ledenica cave, where there’s a Kneipp spring. The Loka trail leads to Snake Castle and the Valley of Mills. There are five cycle routes and bikes for hire. At the table, the Arnika Dobrna women’s association cooks from their grandmothers’ recipes, and walnut bread is the speciality. On Saturday 7 November 2026 the village celebrates St Martin’s Day with the christening of the new wine, according to the municipality.

    Fitting it in

I’d come for at least three nights, to mix the water with unhurried walks. If you’re comparing spas in Slovenia, Dobrna is one of the quietest.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Dobrna and choose by the reviews.
