Bovec is the Soča Valley's adventure base: rafting and kayaking on the Soča, Mount Kanin, Kluže fortress, the Virje waterfall and the Trenta valley. The village has 1,520 people and heads a municipality of 3,052 (SURS) at the threshold of Triglav National Park; with 235,614 arrivals in 2025 it was Slovenia's seventh most visited municipality.

    How I would do it

Bovec is best with two or three nights. I'd give one day to the river, rafting or kayaking with a local agency, another to Trenta and the Soča's source, and keep a quiet afternoon to walk to the Virje waterfall and eat bovški krafi on the square.

Rafting and kayaking on the Soča

The Slovenian Tourist Board counts more than 60 sports agencies with qualified guides in the valley, and the Soča hosts international kayaking competitions.

    3. 03 My tip

A summer bus so you can leave the car

In July and August the Bovec Hop-on Hop-off bus runs to the Virje waterfall and other spots in the valley, so you don't have to hunt for parking.

    4. 04 Getting there

      Over Vršič to Kranjska Gora

From Bovec the road climbs through Trenta to the 1,611 m Vršič pass and drops to Kranjska Gora; in summer a bus links the two.

      Vršič Pass

    The Soča: rafting and kayaking

The Soča is an emerald river that rises in Trenta and runs for 138 km, hidden and calm at first and then suddenly lively, with waterfalls and rapids. Its rapids are perfect for rafting, kayaking and canyoning, and in the quieter stretches anglers fly-fish for marble trout. The Slovenian Tourist Board counts more than 60 sports agencies with guides in the valley, many of them in Bovec, which is why I’d pick it as the base for the upper Soča Valley. You’ll find the options and tips in the guide to Soča rafting.

About 11 km towards Vršič you reach the Great Soča Gorge, with 750 m of green pools and polished walls only a few metres wide and around 15 m deep, which can only be seen from certain points on the Soča Trail. Boating inside it is forbidden, and the put-in for river sports is at the end of the gorge.

Kanin, Trenta and Log pod Mangartom

The Kanin gondola leaves from the village and climbs from 436 to 2,202 m, and the local tourist board bills it as Slovenia’s longest. Check its status before you go, because the Slovenian side of the ski area didn’t operate in the 2025-2026 winter. Up the valley, Trenta holds the source of the Soča, the Alpinum Juliana botanical garden and the monument to Julius Kugy, and the road continues to the Vršič pass.

To the north, Log pod Mangartom is an Alpine village below the Loška stena wall, 5 km wide and over 1,000 m high, from where the panoramic Mangart road climbs. Further up the valley, Lepena is the starting point for Lake Krn. Čezsoča, by the river, is the place for gravel beaches, and at Vodenca, where the Soča and the Koritnica meet, there are four campsites.

    Kluže, Virje and around

Kluže fortress, 4 km from the village towards the Predil pass, rises above the gorge of the Koritnica river, up to 70 m deep. In the 15th century it was a wooden fort against Turkish raids, it was later defended in stone against Napoleon’s army, and in the 20th century it was part of the Isonzo Front. A 100 m tunnel leads up in half an hour to the ruins of Fort Hermann, and beneath Kluže a 400 m tunnel can be visited with a guide in summer.

The Virje waterfall near Plužna is the loveliest short walk in the area. The Glijun stream falls in several strands into a green pool, with water at about 7 °C. You can walk or cycle there from the village, and I cover it separately in the guide to the Virje waterfall.

    The square and bovški krafi

The heart of the village is Bovec square, which fills with terraces and events in the evening. To eat, the local classics are bovški krafi, sweet dumplings of pears, apples, walnuts, raisins and cinnamon, Bovec sheep’s cheese, which has protected origin, and čompe with cottage cheese. Bovec also has a 9-hole golf course, a new bike park and paragliding launches, and in September it hosts its marathon.
