Metaldays, the festival that left Tolmin, and what came next

    Facts checked on
    First edition
    2004, as Metalcamp
    Named Metaldays
    From 2013

Metaldays is no longer held: in 2024 its organisers announced there would be no further editions. It began in 2004 as Metalcamp at Sotočje, where the Soča meets the Tolminka in Tolmin, took the Metaldays name in 2013 and had its last edition at Lake Velenje in 2023. Metal carries on at Sotočje with Tolminator, for about 5,000 people, and punk with Punk Rock Holiday.

    How I would do it

If you're looking for Metaldays next summer, I wouldn't bother with ticket sites that still list it. I'd look at Tolminator, which uses the same riverside site with a smaller crowd, and book a bed in Tolmin as soon as the dates are out.

What I would book for Tolmin

How to do it, in order

    1. Forget Metaldays

It ended after the 2023 edition at Lake Velenje; ticket sites that still list it are out of date.

    2. Look at Tolminator

Metal carries on at Sotočje with Tolminator, for about 5,000 people; in 2026 it ran from 24 to 28 July.

      About 5,000 people

    3. Book Tolmin early

Book a bed in Tolmin as soon as the dates are published, because the small town fills up fast.

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Watch out

Watch out for sites still selling Metaldays

The festival's old domain no longer leads to its website, and on 19-10-2026 it redirected to an unrelated page. Some festival listings still show editions that never happened, such as 2025.

    2. 02 Most beautiful

Sotočje, a stage between two rivers

The Sotočje meadow sits where the Tolminka flows into the Soča, a short walk from the centre of Tolmin. In good weather a dip in the river between bands was part of the plan.

      Tolminator, metal's successor

Since 2023 Sotočje has hosted Tolminator, a metal festival limited to about 5,000 people. In 2026 it ran from 24 to 28 July, according to the Slovenian Tourist Board.

      The gorges are next door

From Sotočje you can walk or drive up to the Tolminka gorges, the obvious plan for the morning after a gig.

    Why there’s no more Metaldays

The Velenje edition ran from 30 July to 5 August 2023, and that summer’s floods forced the last two days to be called off. The organisers put people up and fed them in a sports hall in town. In January 2024 they pushed that year’s edition back to 2025, and later posted a long statement on their website that opened with the decision not to organise any more. They pointed to losses from the pandemic, the floods and costs that no longer added up. If you’re curious about the town that hosted its final chapter, the guide to Velenje covers it.

What’s left at Sotočje: Tolminator and Punk Rock Holiday

Metal hasn’t left Tolmin. Since 2023 Sotočje has hosted Tolminator, designed for about 5,000 people, which in 2026 ran from 24 to 28 July. August brings Punk Rock Holiday, going since 2011, which in 2026 ran from 11 to 14 August. July also has Butik, for electronic music. Each year’s dates are listed by the Slovenian Tourist Board, and you’ll find them together in the guide to events in Slovenia.

    From Metalcamp to Metaldays

It started in 2004 as Metalcamp and changed its name to Metaldays in 2013. The formula was simple and very much its own, a week of gigs with camping, river beaches and mountains all round, in the same Soča Valley where other people come for the rafting. Big names in the genre played there, and in its final years in Tolmin it drew about 12,000 people, according to RTV Slovenija.

    Why it left Tolmin

In 2022 the council limited music at Sotočje to eight hours a day and until one in the morning, and required the meadow to stay open to the public during the day. It was also considering a cap of 5,000 people per festival. With those numbers Metaldays didn’t fit, and that year the organisers confirmed that 2022 would be their last edition beside the Soča. In 2023 they moved to Vista, an open site by Lake Velenje, on the other side of the country.

If you’re going to a festival in Tolmin

What made Metaldays special is still there, the green river, the mountains overhead and a small town that throws itself into it for a few days. I’d book somewhere to stay as soon as the dates are announced, because Tolmin doesn’t have many beds, and keep a morning free for the Tolmin Gorges, a short walk from Sotočje and very welcome after a night of gigs.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Tolmin and choose by the reviews.

    Metaldays: questions and answers

    Is Metaldays still going?

No. The last edition was in Velenje in 2023. In January 2024 the organisers postponed that year's edition to 2025, and later posted on their website that they would not organise any more, citing losses from the pandemic, the 2023 floods and rising costs.

    Where was Metaldays held?

From 2004 to 2022 at Sotočje, the meadow in Tolmin where the Tolminka and the Soča meet. In 2023 it moved to Vista, by Lake Velenje.

Is there still a metal festival in Tolmin?

Yes, Tolminator, held since 2023 at the same Sotočje site with a capacity of about 5,000. In 2026 it ran from 24 to 28 July.

    Why did Metaldays leave Tolmin?

Slovenian press reported disagreements with the council in 2022. It limited music to eight hours a day and until 1am, and was considering a cap of 5,000 people per festival, while Metaldays drew about 12,000.

What other festivals take place at Sotočje?

For 2026 the Slovenian Tourist Board listed Butik, an electronic music festival, Tolminator and Punk Rock Holiday, which has been running since 2011.

Are old Metaldays tickets valid for anything?

There's no edition to use them for. When 2024 was postponed, the organisers said those tickets would be valid for 2025, but that edition never took place.
