Otočec is known for its castle on an island in the River Krka, first recorded in 1252 and, according to the tourist board, Slovenia's only water castle, now a five-star hotel. The village has 865 people, belongs to Novo mesto and is an hour from Ljubljana, with golf, a treetop adventure park and thermal water nearby.

    How I would do it

Enjoying the castle doesn't require a booking. I'd cross the wooden bridge, loop round the island and stop for a drink in the courtyard. If you want one splurge on the trip, though, a night here is one of the easier ones to justify.

What I would check before going

    Otočec: the quick answer

    Full read: 2 min

    • A village of 865 people next to Novo mesto.
    • Its castle sits on an island in the Krka and dates back to at least 1252.
    • The tourist board calls it Slovenia's only water castle.
    • Today it's a five-star hotel with a Michelin Key.

    The practical bit

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Worth the splurge

      A Michelin Key in 2026

Hotel Grad Otočec received one Michelin Key in 2026 for the second year running. According to its website, it's one of four Slovenian hotels with one Key.

    2. 02 Most beautiful

A park of exotic trees and tufa

The tourist board rates the castle park, with its many exotic tree species, and the tufa barriers the Krka forms around it as a first-class natural landmark.

    3. 03 My tip

Check it's open on the day

The castle sometimes closes for weddings and events. Its website warned, for example, that it would close on 21 October 2026 and reopen at noon on the 22nd.

    4. 04 Getting there

      Minutes from Novo mesto

According to the hotel's website, Otočec is a few minutes' drive from Novo mesto and an hour from Ljubljana.

      Novo mesto

    Bookings I would make

A small village by the Krka

Otočec has 865 residents according to SURS and belongs to Novo mesto municipality, in Dolenjska. The river shapes everything here. The Krka runs wide and shallow, builds tufa barriers and wraps the castle island in a park that the tourist board rates as a first-class natural landmark for its exotic trees.

    Otočec, the water castle

The castle is the reason to come. It’s first recorded in 1252, when it was part of the Freising estate in Lower Carniola and run by the de Werde family, known as the knights of the islet. It then passed from one noble family to another, changed shape several times and has now been restored to its Gothic and Renaissance looks. The Novo mesto tourist office describes it as a cultural monument of national importance.

The tourist board calls it Slovenia’s only water castle. Inside is a five-star Relais & Châteaux hotel, with a restaurant drawing on Dolenjska cooking, a wine cellar set inside one of the towers and an annex, the Devetnajstica country house. In 2026 the Michelin Guide gave it one Key for the second year running, and according to its website it’s one of only four Slovenian hotels with that distinction.

Is it worth it if you’re not staying?

Yes. I think the castle is just as enjoyable from outside. Walk across the longer wooden bridge, loop round the park and sit in the courtyard with a drink and the river all around. The only thing to do first is check the website, because it closes on some days for weddings and events, as it did on 21 October 2026.

    Golf, treetops and thermal water

There’s more to do around the castle. The hotel claims one of the longest and most attractive golf courses in Slovenia, and the island woods hold an adventure park with bridges, ladders and nets up in the canopy. Hotel Šport, also in Otočec, has sports-themed rooms, a thermal-water pool and saunas, and the castle itself offers its guests a large thermal pool.

Otočec, Novo mesto and the Krka

Otočec is an hour from Ljubljana, so it works as a day trip, but I’d pair it with Novo mesto and a paddle on the Krka river. If you’re touring the country’s castles, it’s on my list of castles in Slovenia, and the Dolenjska spas, Dolenjske Toplice and Šmarješke Toplice, are close by.
