Slovenia in June is close to its best. The average reaches 20.2°C in Ljubljana and 21.6°C at Portorož, everything is open and Bled doesn't fill up the way it does in August. 25 June, Statehood Day, is a national work-free holiday; the 8th, Primož Trubar Day, is a working day.

    When I would go

Between June and August, I'd go for June. You get the longest days of the year, the lakes and the Soča are warm enough to tempt you and you can still park at Bled in the morning.

    The practical bit

Before you go to Slovenia, this

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      The Julian Alps wide awake

In June Kredarica's average, below Triglav, rises to 5.3°C and Rateče's to 16°C. It's the month when the valleys of the Julian Alps and Triglav National Park are at their greenest.

    2. 02 My tip

      The 25th, a national holiday

Statehood Day marks the independence acts of 25 June 1991. It's a work-free day according to the government, so expect shops to be shut.

    3. 03 To save money

      Before July, more room

The free Radovljica-Bled shuttle runs only in July and August, a clear sign of when the crowds peak. In June, finding a room in Bled takes less effort.

      where to stay in Bled

    June weather, storms included

June hovers around twenty degrees in Ljubljana (20.2°C on the official series), with Maribor almost the same and Portorož a little warmer at 21.6°C. The Alps are fresher, with 16°C at Rateče and 5.3°C at Kredarica, just below Triglav’s summit. What doesn’t drop is the rain, 122 mm in the capital and 187 mm up high, so pack a waterproof. I compare every month in Slovenia weather.

Lakes, rivers and mountains in June

In June Vintgar Gorge and Bled Castle are both on long hours, the castle until 8pm, and the lakes at Bled, Bohinj and Jasna come into their own. It’s also the month when the valleys of Triglav National Park, the country’s only national park, are at their greenest. For the Soča Valley, with its gorges and Kozjak waterfall, I’d set aside at least a full day. The park is explained in Triglav National Park.

    25 June, Statehood Day

25 June is Statehood Day, a national work-free holiday according to the government. It marks the passing of the independence acts on that day in 1991, followed by the declaration on 26 June and the Ten-Day War. A few weeks earlier, on 8 June, the country remembers Primož Trubar, who published the first printed books in Slovenian in 1550, but that one is a working day. The story behind both dates is in Slovenia’s Independence Day.

Getting around without a car in June

Summer is when several local transport schemes the Tourist Board describes come into play. Bohinj has a summer mobility card that gives free public transport around the valley and free parking, plus half price on the journey to Ljubljana. The Soča Valley runs a summer hop-on hop-off bus, and Ankaran has a free summer bus to its beaches. Dates vary by scheme and aren’t all published, so I’d ask the local tourist office when you book. In Ljubljana, summer also brings the Ljubljana Festival, the jazz festival and open-air cinema at the castle, though their 2027 dates weren’t out when I checked.

    June or July?

If you’re torn, here’s how I’d decide. In July the average rises to 21.9°C in Ljubljana and 23.6°C at Portorož, and the sea is more inviting. But July and August are when the free Radovljica-Bled shuttle runs, which exists precisely because Bled gets jammed in those months, and in May 2026 the Tourist Board announced paid, capped parking at Vršič because of summer pressure. In June that pressure hasn’t arrived. For the beach, July; for everything else, June. The comparison carries on in Slovenia in July. How things change from June to August is gathered in Slovenia in summer.

It's summer. The 2001-2010 average was 20.2°C in Ljubljana, 20.1°C in Maribor, 21.6°C at Portorož and 16°C at Rateče. It rains quite a bit, 122 mm in the capital, and the FCDO warns about violent storms in the country.

Is June a good month to visit Slovenia?

One of the best. Everything's open, the days are long and there are fewer people than in July and August. For me it's the ideal month to combine lakes, the Soča and the coast.

What is celebrated on 25 June in Slovenia?

Statehood Day, marking the independence acts passed on 25 June 1991. It's a national holiday and a work-free day according to the government.

Is 8 June a public holiday in Slovenia?

It's a national holiday, Primož Trubar Day, after the author of the first printed books in Slovenian, but it's a working day: shops and offices stay open.

Can you go into the high mountains in June?

Averages are now above zero, 5.3°C at Kredarica, but it rains a lot up there (187 mm). I'd check path conditions and the forecast before any high-level route.
