What to see in Slovenj Gradec, the Mislinja valley town in Koroška, with 7,746 people according to SURS (2026): a medieval centre around the main square, the birthplace of composer Hugo Wolf, now a museum, and the Koroška Gallery of Fine Arts. Since 1989 it has been a UN Peace Messenger City, and the Štrekna cycle route runs along the valley.

    How I would do it

I'd give Slovenj Gradec an unhurried day and use it as a base for Koroška. Hugo Wolf's house and the gallery first, lunch on the square, and in the afternoon the Štrekna by bike, or Mežica if the weather turns.

    Worth knowing about Slovenj Gradec

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      Coffee at Hugo Wolf's house

The composer's birthplace is a carefully kept museum of his life and work, and you can try Wolf's coffee, a special blend, according to the tourist board.

    2. 02 Worth the splurge

      Honey paradise

Honey Paradise Perger 1757 shows how home-made sweets, gingerbread and lect hearts are made. It has welcomed over 100,000 visitors, including the Dalai Lama and Luciano Pavarotti.

    3. 03 My tip

      Cycle the old railway

The Štrekna route follows 24 km of former railway through the Mislinja valley, fully asphalted and family-friendly, with stops at old railway buildings.

    4. 04 Getting there

      The church on the mountain

Above the valley rises Uršlja gora, with St Ursula's Church on its summit and views across Koroška.

What I would book for Slovenj Gradec

On the main square stands Hugo Wolf’s birthplace, now a well-kept museum of the composer’s life and work, where you can try Wolf’s coffee. The Koroška Gallery of Fine Arts shows Slovenian artists such as Jože Tisnikar, Bogdan Borčić, Karel Pečko and Franc Berneker, alongside international names. The Štirje kovači ensemble is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest-running, and the Levovnik Shoe Museum recalls the town’s shoemaking trade.

The main churches are St Elizabeth’s and the Holy Spirit. At Legen, on the edge of town, St George’s Church holds the foundations of an early Christian chapel and 9th-century graves, the only material evidence of the first Christian communities in former Carantania, according to the tourist board. You can also walk the town walls.

Why is it called a City of Peace?

Because in 1989 the UN granted it the title of Peace Messenger City. The town keeps it alive with the Peace Festival every September and the Peace Run in October. The tourist board also calls it a town of peace and art, for its commitment to cultural exchange.

    Honey, bikes and mountains

Honey Paradise Perger 1757 shows how honey sweets, gingerbread and lect hearts are made, and has hosted visitors such as the Dalai Lama and Pavarotti. The Štrekna cycle route runs 24 km along the old railway through the Mislinja valley, asphalted and family-friendly, and further up the valley it passes through Mislinja, with Huda luknja cave by the road. Above the valley rises Uršlja gora, and to the east begin the Pohorje hills.

    Events through the year

The town keeps a busy cultural calendar, according to the tourist board, with the Medieval Prelude in June, the Shots film festival and various craft fairs and eco-festivals, on top of the Peace Festival and Peace Run.

    A day in Slovenj Gradec

I’d give it a full, unhurried day. It makes a good base for exploring Koroška, with the Mežica mine and the geopark in the next valley, and the Aqualatio pool complex for rainy days.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Slovenj Gradec and choose by the reviews.
