Distances in Slovenia, how long it takes to get around

    Facts checked on
    Ljubljana-Bled
    56 km, about 45 min
    Ljubljana-Postojna
    54 km, about 40 min

Distances in Slovenia are short: from Ljubljana almost everything is under two hours by car. By road it's about 56 km to Bled (45 minutes), 54 km to Postojna, 107 km to Koper, 122 km to Piran (an hour and a half), 126 km to Maribor and 154 km to Bovec (nearly two hours), by my calculation with OpenStreetMap data. Times assume no traffic; in summer and in the Alps, allow more.

    How I would get around
    Sergio Lepone

I'd always add a third to satnav times in summer and in the Alpine valleys, for traffic, parking and stops. On that basis Ljubljana works as a base for nearly everything except the Soča and Prekmurje, where I'd rather stay locally.

    If you only read this

    Full read: 2 min

    • From Ljubljana, Bled and Postojna are about 45 minutes away.
    • The coast is an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half away; Maribor, an hour and a half.
    • The Soča Valley is the slowest, nearly two hours to Bovec.
    • Times assume no traffic; add some slack in summer.

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Getting there

      Everything close to Ljubljana

Bled, Postojna, Škofja Loka, Kranj, Kamnik, Novo mesto and Celje are all under an hour's drive from the capital, according to the OpenStreetMap calculation.

    2. 02 My tip

The Soča is a long drive

Bovec is 154 km from Ljubljana, nearly two hours. From Kranjska Gora it's 47 km over the Vršič pass, a slow mountain road.

    3. 03 Most beautiful

      Lakes half an hour apart

From Bled it's 21 km to Bohinjska Bistrica and 26 km to Ribčev Laz, on Lake Bohinj, about 25 minutes.

      Coast and Karst together

Postojna and Piran are 73 km apart. Trieste and Koper are just 20 km apart, so the Slovenian coast combines easily with Italy.

Before you set off, check this

    Distances from Ljubljana

The capital sits in the middle of the country, and it shows. Škofja Loka, Kamnik and Kranj are half an hour away, Postojna and Bled around 40 to 45 minutes, and Novo mesto, Celje and Idrija under an hour. For the Alpine lakes, Bohinjska Bistrica is about 76 km away and Kranjska Gora 86 km, a little over an hour. The coast, Koper at 107 km and Piran at 122 km, is an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half away, as is Maribor, at 126 km. The furthest in the table are Bovec, 154 km, and Murska Sobota, 178 km, about two hours. The classic outings from the capital are in day trips from Ljubljana.

The Alps and the Soča Valley

Distances between the lakes are short. From Bled it’s 21 km to Bohinjska Bistrica and 26 km to Ribčev Laz, on the shore of Lake Bohinj, as I explain in Bled to Bohinj. From Bled to Kranjska Gora, 40 km. What’s deceptive is the Soča. From Kranjska Gora to Bovec is only 47 km, but over the Vršič pass, a slow mountain road, and from Ljubljana by motorway it takes nearly two hours. If you want the valley at a gentle pace, staying there saves hours in the car.

    The coast and the Karst

Postojna and Piran are 73 km apart, an hour on the motorway, so caves and coast fit easily into one trip. Trieste and Koper are 20 km apart, and since 2026 the old coastal expressway between the Škofije border and Koper no longer needs a vignette, according to DARS.

By bus and from the airport

Without a car, times change little on short trips. Ljubljana bus station gives 30 minutes to Škofja Loka, 45 to Velika planina by shuttle, 60 minutes to Bled or Postojna, 80 to Koper and 120 to Bohinj, where the bus stops in village after village. From Brnik airport, the Tourist Board gives 10 km to Kranj, 25 km to Ljubljana and 35 km to Bled, so it often makes sense to head straight to the lake without going through the capital. How to get about in each case is covered in getting around Slovenia.

The east: Maribor, Ptuj and Prekmurje

Maribor is an hour and a half from Ljubljana, Ptuj 30 km from Maribor and Murska Sobota 57 km. By train, the Ljubljana-Maribor line is the busiest in the country, as I explain in Ljubljana to Maribor. To string all this together into a route, see Slovenia road trip.
