Scams in Slovenia, the few traps worth knowing

    Facts checked on

    What you need to know

Scams in Slovenia are few and always the same ones. DARS warns of websites reselling the motorway vignette with commissions of several tens of percent, gov.uk of unauthorised tow trucks on the motorway, the airport of drivers touting for fares and Postojna Cave of resold tickets.

    In tourist areas, add pickpocketing.

The essentials in a few lines

    Full read: 2 min

    • Buy the vignette only from DARS or its authorised sellers.
    • Motorway tow trucks only with the DARS logo, or call 1970.
    • At the airport, only taxis from the official rank.
    • Tickets from each attraction's official website.
    What I would do

I buy anything important on the official site (vignette, caves, transfers) and distrust the first sponsored search ad. On the street, the only thing I watch is my bag in crowds.

    The steps, one by one

    1. Buy the vignette officially

Only from DARS, ASFINAG, ADAC or Petrol online; resellers add commissions of several tens of percent.

    2. Check the tow truck

If you break down on the motorway, authorised recovery vehicles carry the DARS logo.

    3. Use the official taxi rank

At the airport, take a taxi only from the licensed rank, not from drivers who approach you.

    4. Report theft

If something is stolen, call the police on 113 and keep the report for your insurer.

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Watch out

      Vignettes with a mark-up

On 1 June 2026 DARS warned of resellers charging commissions of several tens of percent, who sometimes never buy the vignette or change the plate afterwards. Only DARS, ASFINAG, ADAC and Petrol are authorised.

      Unauthorised tow trucks

gov.uk warns of unauthorised recovery operators offering help on the motorway and charging high fees. Authorised ones carry the DARS logo; if in doubt, call 1970.

      Taxi touts

The airport bans soliciting passengers and asks you to avoid anyone offering a ride in the terminal. Rank taxis display a permit behind the windscreen and published fares.

      Resold tickets

Postojna Cave sells tickets only on its official website and warns of unofficial resale. Always buy on the website of the place you're visiting.

Fake vignette sites, the commonest scam

This is the one that catches most travellers, because it starts in the search results. DARS, the motorway company, warned on 1 June 2026 that more and more unauthorised resellers are offering the vignette through misleading websites, with commissions of several tens of percent. Besides overpaying, there are two risks, that the reseller takes your money and never buys the vignette, or buys it and later changes the linked number plate without telling you, leaving you on the road without a valid one. DARS adds that these resellers pay for adverts to rank high. The only authorised online sellers are its own website, evinjeta.dars.si, ASFINAG, ADAC and Petrol. Prices and how to buy are in the Slovenian vignette.

    Unauthorised motorway tow trucks

Stranded on the motorway with a broken-down car, you may be approached; gov.uk warns that unauthorised recovery operators may offer help and charge high fees. Authorised ones display the DARS logo, and if in doubt, the best move is to ring 1970 before accepting anything. What to do step by step in a breakdown is in driving in Slovenia.

    Airport taxis and transfers

At Ljubljana Airport, soliciting passengers is banned, and the airport itself asks you to turn down anyone offering a taxi inside the building. Authorised taxis wait at the signed rank in front of Terminal B, display a permit behind the windscreen and have published fares. Always get a receipt with the breakdown when paying, and if you have a transfer booked, confirm the car’s number plate before getting in. More detail is in taxis in Slovenia.

    Resold cave tickets

Postojna Cave sells its tickets only on its official website and warns of unofficial resale. My advice goes for any attraction, buy on the site’s own website and be wary of odd prices. If you hire a guide, gov.uk explains that professional guides in Slovenia carry an official registration card; asking to see it isn’t rude. And if the card machine suggests a 15 or 20% tip when you pay, that isn’t a trap, but it isn’t an obligation either, since there’s always a no-tip option; what people usually leave is in tipping in Slovenia.

    Pickpocketing in tourist spots

The Tourist Board’s tips are simple, don’t leave belongings on show, especially in the car, carry only the cash you need, use the hotel safe and lock the car in a well-lit car park. The Spanish foreign ministry adds that bike theft is common and that bag snatching has risen in busy tourist areas and on buses, so use a sturdy lock. If you’re robbed, call 113. The wider picture is in is Slovenia safe.

    Frequently asked questions

Are there many scams in Slovenia?

No. The Tourist Board says theft is the most common crime. The traps that come up most are vignette resale websites, unauthorised tow trucks and drivers touting for taxi fares.

Where can I buy the vignette without being overcharged?

On the official website evinjeta.dars.si or from the authorised sellers ASFINAG, ADAC and Petrol, according to DARS. Also at petrol stations, post offices and DARS offices.

How can I tell if a tow truck is authorised?

Authorised ones carry the DARS logo, according to gov.uk. If you're unsure, call 1970 before accepting help.

    Are airport taxis trustworthy?

Those at the official rank, yes; they display a permit and the airport publishes their fares. Avoid drivers offering rides inside the terminal and ask for a receipt.

What should I do if I'm robbed?

Call the police on 113, as the Tourist Board advises, and if your passport was taken, contact the embassy.
