Komen is a municipality of 3,476 people over 102.6 km² in the northern Karst, between Sežana and the Vipava Valley. Its main town, also Komen, has only 609 residents; what draws visitors are its stone villages, Štanjel first among them, the great prehistoric hillfort of Debela Griža and teran, the Karst wine grown on red soil.

    How I would do it

I'd give Komen a quiet morning, with Štanjel as the main event and a detour through Volčji Grad for its stone gateways, which many reckon the finest in the Karst.

    If you only read this

    Full read: 2 min

    • Komen has 3,476 people in the northern Karst, and its main town just 609.

    The practical bit

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Getting there

      Štanjel, the main draw

The medieval village of Štanjel, on Turn Hill, is Komen's main sight, with its castle, walls and the Ferrari Garden.

      A 13,000-tonne hillfort

Debela Griža, by Volčji Grad, was raised around the 8th century BC from at least 13,000 tonnes of stone, with a wall about 850 m across.

    3. 03 My tip

      How to reach Debela Griža

Two gravel tracks lead to the hillfort from Volčji Grad, one from house number 6 and the other from number 55. The educational Trail of Stone passes by.

    4. 04 Most beautiful

      Gorjansko and Štrekelj

Karel Štrekelj (1859-1912), who compiled the great collection of Slovenian folk songs, was born in Gorjansko. His birthplace is now a memorial room.

    Bookings I would make

What Komen is, in the northern Karst

Komen has 3,476 people and covers 102.6 km², and its main town, also Komen, has only 609. It lies in the northern Karst, between Sežana and the Vipava Valley. The Slovenian Tourist Board singles out the Karst’s teran wine, grown on red soil, its ham and cheeses and the bora wind, and here you find all of that in a very small area.

    What to see, Štanjel first

The best-known village in the municipality is Štanjel, an ancient village built in terraces on Turn Hill. It has a castle, 15th-century walls, the church of St Daniel with its lemon-shaped bell tower and the Ferrari Garden, designed by the architect Maks Fabiani, who was the village mayor for twenty years. The restored castle holds the Lojze Spacal Gallery and an exhibition on Fabiani, and it is the reason most people make the trip.

    Debela Griža and Volčji Grad

Beside Volčji Grad lies Debela Griža, the remains of a large Bronze and Iron Age hillfort from around the 8th century BC. It was built from at least 13,000 tonnes of stone and was the centre of all the hillforts around. Its wall, single and in three places double, has an outer diameter of about 850 m, and what is left still measures 8 to 15 m wide and 2 to 4 m high. Two gravel tracks climb to it from the village, and the educational Trail of Stone passes by.

Volčji Grad itself is worth a stroll. For many it is one of the loveliest villages in the Karst, with its carved stone gateways, the «kalone», its wells and stone gutters.

    Gorjansko, Štrekelj and Tone Kralj

Gorjansko is the birthplace of Karel Štrekelj (1859-1912), a linguist and ethnographer who gathered Slovenian folk poems and songs into four volumes. His birth house is now a memorial room, and for the 150th anniversary of his birth a bust by Mirsad Begić was unveiled outside it. The parish church of St Andrew, from 1896, was painted by Tone Kralj between 1955 and 1963, and his best-known work there is the Way of the Cross.

    Getting to Komen

You reach Komen by car, from the coast motorway via Sežana or from the Vipava Valley. The Ljubljana bus station planner showed no direct service to either Komen or Štanjel in October 2026. I gather the rest of the south-west’s sights in the coast and Karst.
