By car it's motorway with a DARS vignette; in summer, the Slovenian Tourist Board says coast buses are frequent.

    How I would get there
    Sergio Lepone

I wouldn't do Piran as a day trip from Ljubljana: the journey and change eat up well over four hours, and Piran is at its best in the evening and first thing. A night in Piran or Portorož transforms the visit.

What I would check before going

    Bookings I would make

    The practical bit

Before you go to Ljubljana, this

    1. 01 Getting there

In autumn the bus stops at Izola

Ljubljana bus station notes that from 28 September 2026 the Ljubljana to Izola line runs only as far as Izola. On Monday 19 October there were 12 departures, the first at 6.10am and the last at 7.10pm.

      Izola
    2. 02 My tip

      Koper has more buses

There were 33 buses to Koper on Monday 19 October 2026, taking 1 hour 20 to 2 hours 23. Check the journey time before buying, as the slow ones take nearly twice as long.

      Koper
    3. 03 To save money

      Weekend discount

Integrated regional tickets are 25% off on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and a day ticket never costs more than €18 anywhere in the country.

    4. 04 Most beautiful

What waits at the other end

Tartini Square, St George's Cathedral on its rise, the walls, the Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum and, just outside town, the Sečovlje salt pans.

      Piran
    5. 05 Getting there

      Piran in ten days

On a ten-day trip round Slovenia, the Piran coast gets its own stage between the Karst and Postojna.

      Slovenia in 10 days

Is there a direct bus from Ljubljana to Piran?

Not in autumn 2026. I checked on 17 October for Monday 19 and Saturday 24 October, and Piran came up with no departures. The alternative is to ride to Izola, with 12 buses on Monday 19 October between 6.10am and 7.10pm taking 1 hour 34 to 1 hour 41, or to Koper, with 33 departures that day taking 1 hour 20 to 2 hours 23. From either you carry on to Piran by local bus, which that planner does not cover, so check it when you arrive.

Summer is a different story. The Tourist Board says buses from Ljubljana to the coast are frequent in season, but I will not assume the direct line is back until I see the 2027 timetable.

    Tickets and discounts

The journey is covered by Slovenia’s integrated regional bus and train tickets. At weekends and on public holidays singles drop by 25%. A day ticket is worth two singles and never tops €18, and up to five people travelling together pay €15 for a weekend group ticket. Children under 6 ride free, and the planner shows the exact fare when you choose your date.

    Driving to Piran

Driving saves the change. On the motorways you need a DARS e-vignette tied to your registration, bought only from the official shop, as fake sites resell it. If you are in a hire car from the airport, check whether one is already registered to it. With a car you can also break the journey at Postojna or the Škocjan Caves and reach Piran in the afternoon.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Piran before prices climb.

Day trip or a night on the coast?

I would stay. There and back, with changes, takes well over four hours, and Piran is far better at sunset and first thing, before the groups. A night in Piran or Portorož gives you Tartini Square, St George’s Cathedral up on the hill and the walls, the Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum and, the next morning, the Sečovlje salt pans. I compare places to stay in where to stay in Piran.

    Covering the whole coast

Piran, Izola and Koper are neighbours, and the whole coast is 47 km long according to the Slovenian government. Two or three nights on the coast cover all three with time left for the hinterland. Then head back to Ljubljana or on into the Karst; to plan it, start with the day trips from Ljubljana.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Piran before prices climb.

    Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct bus from Ljubljana to Piran?

Not in autumn 2026. Since 28 September the line has ended at Izola, and the Ljubljana bus station planner showed no direct departures to Piran. You change at Izola or Koper.

How long does it take to get from Ljubljana to Piran?

The leg to Izola alone takes 1 hour 34 to 1 hour 41, and to Koper 1 hour 20 to 2 hours 23. Add the change and the local bus to Piran; I would allow over two hours each way.

Is Piran worth a day trip from Ljubljana?

You can do it, but I would stay over. With well over four hours of travel there and back you lose the evening, which is when Piran looks its best.

Is it better to drive from Ljubljana to Piran?

It saves the change. You need the DARS e-vignette for the motorway, linked to your number plate, bought only from the official shop before you set off, and you drive on the right.

Are there buses to the coast in summer?

Yes. The Tourist Board says there are frequent buses from Ljubljana to the coast in summer. The 2027 season times will appear in the bus station's planner once published.

What should I see in Piran in one day?

Tartini Square, St George's Cathedral and the walls, the harbour and, if there is time, the maritime museum. The Sečovlje salt pans are just outside town and need longer.
