Gorje, Triglav National Park
Vintgar Gorge, from the boardwalks to the Šum waterfall
- Length
- 1,600 m, up to 250 m deep
- Full circuit
- 5.7 km, about 3 hours
- All-in-One Pass
- €15 adults, €5 under-15s
Vintgar Gorge is a canyon 1,600 m long and up to 250 m deep, cut by the Radovna river 4 km from Bled, on the edge of Triglav National Park. You walk it one way on wooden boardwalks to the Šum waterfall and come back on a themed trail, 5.7 km in all. It opens from April to October, with timed entry and helmets required; the 2026 season ended on 31 October and it stays closed for safety through the winter.
Vintgar is lovely, which is exactly why it fills up. I'd take the first slot of the morning or one of the last, wear boots and a warm layer, as it's cool inside even in August, and return on the King of Triglav Trail, which looks over Bled.
Is it worth it?
Yes
Yes, if you book an early or late slot. The boardwalks above the Radovna are spectacular, but midday crowds take the shine off, and the €15 ticket only pays off with a calmer walk.

Buy your time slot online
The number of people inside at once is capped and the pass isn't sold at the visitor centre; only online or at the official LIP car park, so booking guarantees your slot.

Free parking with a shuttle
You can't drive to the entrance. The official VINTGAR LIP car park is free with the pass, and an electric shuttle leaves from there roughly every seven minutes.

The Šum waterfall at the end
The path ends at the Šum waterfall, which locals admired long before the gorge itself was explored; from 1878 it could also be seen from a suspension bridge.

04 Getting there
On foot from Bled
From the centre of Bled it's about 4 km, a 50-minute walk on a signposted route, and bikes can be parked free beside the visitor centre.
Bled
A canyon open to visitors since 1893
Glaciers shaped the area and, as they retreated, the Radovna looked for a new way through at the lowest point between the hills of Hom and Boršt. After the last ice age the water kept cutting down, and only at the very end, where the rock is harder, did the step of the Šum waterfall survive.
The gorge stayed out of reach until 1891. That winter was so dry that the Radovna dropped and let in Jakob Žumer, mayor of Gorje, and the photographer and cartographer Benedikt Lergetporer. Local people paid for the walkways, bridges and galleries with money from businesses, hoteliers and fundraising dances, and the path opened on 28 August 1893. The origin of the name is still a mystery; it may be Celtic, or from the German Weingarten, after vineyards near Podhom. Today the gorge marks the eastern edge of Triglav National Park.
The boardwalk route
The gorge path runs one way only, from the VINTGAR visitor centre to the Šum waterfall, and takes about 45 minutes with an audio guide. From there you return on the King of Triglav Trail, 4.1 km across the slopes of Hom through woods and meadows, with views of Bled and the Ljubljana basin. In total it’s 5.7 km with 80 steps, of moderate difficulty, and you should allow around 3 hours.
The Radovna stays at about 10.5 °C all year, and inside the gorge it’s always cooler than outside. More than 600 plant species grow here, and the river is home to the souffia, a flat-bodied fish, the white-throated dipper and, in winter, the otter. According to the official site, at the end of the gorge stands Slovenia’s largest fully preserved stone railway arch bridge, 34 m above the river, and beneath it the intake of the Vintgar power station, the oldest hydroelectric plant still working in the country.
Helmets, time slots and rules
Helmets are compulsory along the whole gorge section, because rock can fall despite the nets. Swimming, leaving the paths, picking plants and flying drones are all forbidden, and dogs go in on a lead with their own pass. The visit isn’t recommended for children under 3 and isn’t possible with a pushchair. If you can’t manage the full walk, you can see just the Šum waterfall, reached from Hom or from Blejska Dobrava.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Bled before prices climb.
Getting to Vintgar from Bled
You can’t drive to the entrance. The official, free car park is VINTGAR LIP, where you can also buy the pass, and the electric shuttle runs from there roughly every seven minutes. A second shuttle leaves Bled’s main bus station every 15 minutes for pass holders. By train, the nearest stop is Podhom, on the Jesenice to Nova Gorica line, and from Bled you can walk in about 50 minutes or cycle. Coming from the capital, the guide to getting from Ljubljana to Bled covers the train, the bus and the car. The gorge opens in April, and for planning those first weeks of the season there’s Slovenia in spring.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Bled before prices climb.

Quick questions about Vintgar Gorge
How much does Vintgar Gorge cost?
The All-in-One Pass costs €15 for adults, students and seniors and €5 for children up to 15; dogs pay €3. It covers the official car park, the shuttle bus and the return trail.
When is Vintgar Gorge open?
From April to October. It closes in winter for safety reasons. Hours change through the season; in the last stretch of 2026, from 21 September to closing, they were 9:00 to 15:00.
How long does Vintgar Gorge take?
The gorge itself takes about 45 minutes, and with the return on the King of Triglav Trail it's 5.7 km and roughly 3 hours, plus the shuttle ride.
Do you have to wear a helmet?
Yes, between the visitor centre and the exit at the Šum waterfall a helmet is compulsory because of the risk of falling rock. You collect it at the visitor centre with a hygienic cap.
Can you visit with small children or a pushchair?
It's not recommended for children under 3, and pushchairs and wheelchairs can't get through, because there are boardwalks, steps and narrow sections above the river.
When is Vintgar Gorge least crowded?
In April and May and from late September to closing. In summer, first thing in the morning and late in the afternoon; the official site puts the peak in mid-morning.
