What to see in Sevnica, a town of 4,555 people on the Sava in Posavje: its castle, over 700 years old, with blaufränkisch vines on the slope and a secret Lutheran chapel, and the old town with a medieval square opening onto the river. It's under an hour's drive from Ljubljana and Zagreb, according to the tourist office, and has almost no mass tourism.

    How I would do it

I see Sevnica as a half-day stop along the Sava valley. I'd go up to the castle, which is guided tours only, walk down the hillside to the old town and stay for Sevnica salami with a glass of blaufränkisch before heading on to Krško.

    My checklist before setting off

The essentials in a few lines

    Full read: 2 min

    • A town of 4,555 on the banks of the Sava.
    • Its castle is over 700 years old, with its own blaufränkisch vineyard.
    • It was a Protestant centre in the 16th century.
    • Its own salami, and a late Roman site 15 minutes' walk up.

    My key points

    My notes on Sevnica

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      A hidden Lutheran chapel

On the castle slope stands the Lutrovska klet, a secret Lutheran chapel from the late 16th century with Renaissance frescoes. It's seen on the castle's guided tour.

      Sevnica Castle
    2. 02 Worth the splurge

      Sevnica salami

Sevniška salama is made to recipes handed down through families, and it has its own yearly competition, the Salamijada, according to the tourist office.

    3. 03 My tip

      Ruins 15 minutes' walk away

Above the village of Vranje, a few kilometres off, the Ajdovski gradec site holds the remains of a 5th and 6th-century settlement. The climb takes about 15 minutes and it's open all year.

    4. 04 Getting there

      By train along the Sava

Sevnica is on the Sava line and you can get there by train, car or bike, according to the tourist office. The 19th-century railway turned it into a transport hub.

    What I would book

    What to see in Sevnica

The old town squeezes in between the castle hill and the river. The main square keeps its medieval shape, a semicircle open to the Sava. Along the way you pass the Gothic church of St Florian, from 1443, the neo-Romanesque St Nicholas, from 1862, and St Martin’s plague column. The Lower Castle, with 1609 carved on its portal, now houses the town hall. By the tracks there’s a railway museum with a model layout, and you can look inside the old Kreutz barber’s shop.

Above it all stands Sevnica Castle, more than 700 years old, with its own blaufränkisch vineyard and cellar. For me that’s what makes the stop worthwhile.

    Salami, voščenka and blaufränkisch

Three local products. Sevnica salami, with its yearly contest, the Salamijada. The voščenka, an old apple with a waxy skin that keeps for a long time. And blaufränkisch (modra frankinja), the red grape of the castle slopes and Lisca, with its own spring festival in the castle park. If you’re interested in Slovenian wine, Sevnica is a good place to try the grape on its own rather than in a blend.

The tourist office also mentions that Melania Trump grew up in Sevnica and went to school here, and the town sells a cake named after her.

    How long to stay

Half a day covers the castle and the old town, or a full day if you climb to Ajdovski gradec. Downriver lie Rajhenburg Castle and Krško, and between Radeče and Sevnica the tourist board highlights a sport-fishing route along the Sava.

    Sevnica at a glance

Sevnica’s population stood at 4,555 on 1 January 2026, according to SURS, with 17,602 in a municipality of 119 settlements. It recorded 4,301 arrivals in 2025, very few for Posavje. The tourist office puts it under an hour’s drive from both Ljubljana and Zagreb, and points out you can get there by train, car or bike. The Slovenian Tourist Board gives it the bronze Slovenia Green Destination label.

    From Liechtenwalde to today

The first written mention dates from 1275, as Liechtenwalde, and in the 14th century it gained market rights. In the 16th century it was one of the Protestant centres of the Slovene lands, and from that time survives the Lutrovska klet, a Lutheran chapel used in secret. In the 19th century the railway between Vienna, Ljubljana and Zagreb arrived, bringing workshops and industry.

Further back, above the village of Vranje, the Ajdovski gradec site holds a 5th and 6th-century settlement with two churches, a baptistery, houses, a cistern and a defensive tower. It’s about 15 minutes’ climb on a woodland path and open all year.
