A guide to the underground Karst
Slovenia's show caves, and how to pick the right one
- Longest
- Postojna, 19.5 km
- World Heritage
- Škocjan, since 1986
- Inside temperature
- Around 10 °C all year
Slovenia's caves have two stars: Postojna, the country's longest show cave at 19.5 km, with a train inside, and Škocjan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986 for its underground river canyon. Around them are a dozen more open to visitors, from Vilenica to Križna jama, mostly in the Karst and Notranjska, all at about 10°C year-round.
If I only had time for one, I'd choose by what I wanted: Postojna for formations and the olm with little effort, Škocjan to be left speechless by the scale. If I could do both, I'd see Škocjan first, because afterwards Postojna looks different.
Caves in Slovenia, in short
Full read: 3 min
- The two big ones are Postojna (19.5 km, with a train) and Škocjan (World Heritage since 1986).
- About a dozen more are open to visitors, mostly in the Karst and Notranjska.
- Inside it is around 10 °C, so take a jumper in any month.
- Postojna tickets are sold on the official website, with packages from €34.90 to €84.50.
Is it for you?
Yes, if…
- Families: Postojna's train makes it easy for children
- Anyone wanting something unique to the Karst
Better not, if…
- Anyone uneasy in enclosed or damp spaces
- Anyone wanting a short, effortless visit at Škocjan
Bookings I would make
- Places to stayBooking.com Stay next to Postojna Cave Sleeping in Postojna lets you take the first tour of the day, when fewer groups go in, and leaves the afternoon free for Predjama or Škocjan.
- Tours and ticketsGetYourGuide Postojna and Predjama tour from Ljubljana Without a car, an organised trip solves the awkward hop between the cave and the castle, which are poorly linked by public transport.
My ranking, scored
Slovenia's caves in the order I'd visit them
My own marks out of 10. They weigh what you cannot see elsewhere in Europe, how well the visit works and how much you get for your time. Opinion, not an official rating.

Škocjan Caves
World Heritage since 1986, with the Reka canyon and the Martel chamber. UNESCO counts it among the largest known underground river canyons, and the scale is what stays with you.
9.6 out of 10
-
Postojna Cave
A cave railway running for over 140 years, a 5 km route in an hour and a half, and the olm. The easiest and the busiest, with everything good and bad that implies.
9.2 out of 10
-
Križna jama
Emerald underground lakes crossed with experienced cavers, and the remains of a cave bear. For anyone who wants more than a walkway and handrails.
8.5 out of 10
-
Vilenica Cave
Its first chamber, the Dance Hall, hosts the closing event of the Vilenica International Literary Festival every year. Small, near Lipica, with a story of its own.
7.8 out of 10
-
Županova jama
Near Grosuplje, a short hop from Ljubljana, where scenes from the Winnetou and Kekec films were shot. A sensible pick with children.
7.2 out of 10
-
Pekel Cave
In the Savinja Valley and over three million years old, according to the tourist board. Worth adding if you are heading east.
7.0 out of 10
The practical bit
What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
The Reka's underground canyon at Škocjan
UNESCO describes passages up to 150 m high and more than 120 m wide, carved by the Reka river, and a single chamber, Martel, of over two million cubic metres. Nothing else underground in Slovenia comes close in scale.

02 Getting there
Postojna and Predjama fit into one day
Predjama Castle is a few kilometres from Postojna Cave and the same company sells combined packages. From Ljubljana it is the classic day trip, easy by car or on an organised tour.
Ljubljana to Postojna Cave -
03 Watch out
Buy Postojna tickets only on the official site
The cave operator sells online and warns about unofficial resellers. In October 2026 its park packages ran from €34.90 to €84.50 for an adult, so treat very different prices with suspicion.
Postojna Cave -
04 My tip
Pack a jumper even in a heatwave
The tourist board puts cave temperatures at about 10 °C, with high humidity and slippery floors. Proper shoes and a warm layer make an August visit far more comfortable.
-
05 To save money
The small caves, without the queues
Vilenica, Divača, Dimnice and Županova jama have shorter tours and smaller groups. After one of the big two, they round off a day without Postojna's prices or crowds.
Vilenica cave -
06 Getting there
The Neanderthal flute
In Divje babe cave, near Cerkno, a flute made from a cave bear bone about 60,000 years old was found in 1995. It is visited with a guide from 15 April to 15 October.
Divje babe flute cave
The big two, Postojna and Škocjan
At 19.5 km, according to the government, Postojna Cave is the longest show cave in Slovenia, and the tourist board claims it is the only karst cave with its own railway. The guided visit lasts about an hour and a half and covers roughly 5 km, starting on a train that has been carrying visitors into the hill for more than 140 years. The olm lives here too, the so-called human fish, the largest cave animal in the world, which can live to around a hundred. That is why it is busy, and why an early slot pays off.
The Škocjan Caves are a different experience altogether. On the World Heritage List since 1986, UNESCO counts them among the biggest subterranean river gorges known, carved by the Reka, with passages up to 150 m high and more than 120 m wide. The Martel chamber alone tops two million cubic metres. You do not come here for pretty stalactites; you come to feel tiny. If I had to keep just one, it would be this.
Postojna or Škocjan in one day?
My rule is simple. Travelling with young children, older relatives or very little time, go to Postojna, because the train does most of the work and Predjama Castle is next door. If you walk comfortably and care more about drama than convenience, go to Škocjan. With two nights in the area, do both, Škocjan first.
One thing worth knowing before you book Postojna is that the operator sells tickets on its own website and warns about unofficial resellers. In October 2026 its packages ran from €34.90 to €84.50 per adult, depending on what was included.
Smaller caves worth the detour
The Karst hides plenty more. Vilenica Cave, near Lipica, opens with the Dance Hall, where the Vilenica International Literary Festival holds its closing event each year; the tourist board admits its age has never been pinned down. Divača Cave once received Crown Prince Rudolf and Sigmund Freud. Dimnice had a water supply system built inside it during the Second World War, and Planina, on the edge of Planinsko polje, is the largest water cave in the country.
Križna jama is the adventurous pick, with emerald lakes crossed in the company of cavers and chambers where the bones of a hibernating cave bear were found. It will not suit everyone, which is exactly why I rate it.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Postojna on Expedia and filter by area before price.
Caves beyond the Karst
Closer to the capital is Županova jama, near Grosuplje, where scenes from the Winnetou and Kekec films were shot. In the Savinja Valley, Pekel Cave is more than three million years old, and the cave under Mt Raduha is the highest show cave in the country, with ice and flowstone side by side. In Koroška, the old lead and zinc galleries of the Mežica mine can be explored by bike or kayak.
Visiting without doing damage
Expect about 10 °C, damp air and slippery floors, so bring a layer and shoes with grip whatever the weather outside. Some caves can only be entered with a licensed cave guide, and in many you will be given a helmet and torch. The tourist board asks you not to touch formations that took thousands of years to grow, to keep the noise down and to use light sparingly. Water from these caves often ends up in village taps above, which is worth remembering.
For the landscape on top, my guide to the Slovenian Karst explains why there are so many caves here in the first place.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Postojna on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most famous cave in Slovenia?
Postojna. At 19.5 km it is the longest show cave in the country, according to the government, and the tourist board calls it the most visited show cave in Europe. Part of the route is covered on a train that has been running for more than 140 years.
Is Postojna or Škocjan better?
Postojna shows off formations and the olm with very little walking. Škocjan is on the World Heritage List for its underground canyon, which is wilder and far bigger. If you are fit and only have one day, I would pick Škocjan.
How cold is it inside the caves?
Around 10 °C, says the Slovenian Tourist Board, with high humidity and slippery ground. Bring a warm layer and decent shoes, even in July and August.
Can I see Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle on the same day?
Yes. They are close together and run by the same company, which sells combined tickets online. It is the standard day trip from Ljubljana.
Are there caves near Ljubljana?
Postojna sits on the way from Ljubljana to the coast, and Županova jama, near Grosuplje, is even closer to the capital. Škocjan and Vilenica are in the Karst, further towards the sea.
Do I need a guide?
Show caves are visited on guided tours. Some caves can only be entered with a licensed cave guide, and the tourist board asks visitors not to touch the formations and to keep noise down.
