- Maribor's big summer city festival, in Lent and the old town.
- The 2026 edition ran from 26 June to 4 July.
- Ticketed concerts mixed with a lot of free programme.
- The 2027 dates have not been published yet.
For me Lent is the best excuse to visit Maribor in summer. I'd book a bed as soon as the dates appear, go to one big concert and spend the other nights at the free events by the Drava, which is where the atmosphere is.

What the official sites leave out
-
01 Most beautiful
Thirty years of street theatre
Within Lent runs Ana Desetnica, the street theatre festival, which reached its 30th edition in 2026 across Oldest Vine Square, the Drava promenade and the streets of the centre.
Lent -
02 To save money
Plenty of free programme
The programme marks events as ticketed or free entry. Street shows, children's Lent and many performances on the promenade cost nothing.
-
03 My tip
Wine beside the oldest vine
During the festival, the Oldest Vine House runs its own tastings and events, Vinsko LENTanje, a few steps from the Drava stages.

04 Getting there
Book your bed early
The whole festival happens in the old town and by the Drava. If you want to sleep near the stages, look at hotels in Maribor as soon as the dates are announced.

Festival Lent in Maribor
It’s run by Narodni dom Maribor, the city’s cultural centre, which describes it as a festival that brings Slovenian and international artists every year and mixes music, theatre, dance, circus, street art and other contemporary arts. The name comes from the quarter where it began, Lent, the riverside part of Maribor where the Judgement and Water towers stand, along with the world’s oldest vine.
The tourist board lists it among the big festivals that set the city’s cultural pace, alongside the Oldest Vine Festival, the Theatre Festival and the Music Festival.
When is Festival Lent?
Straddling June and July. The 2026 edition ran from 26 June to 4 July, nine days of programme plus a few warm-up and follow-on events. The 2027 dates hadn’t been announced by 15 October 2026, although Narodni dom Maribor had already opened applications for performers. If you want to go, I’d keep an eye on the festival website from spring onwards.
The programme, from jazz to circus
The programme is huge and wide-ranging. In 2026 the big concerts on the main stage, on Leon Štukelj Square, featured Dubioza Kolektiv, Laibach and Morcheeba. Around them run named strands. Folkart brings folk groups from several countries; JazzLent covers jazz from around the world; StandUpLent marked 20 years of comedy in 2026; and children’s Lent fills the afternoons with shows and workshops.
My favourite is Ana Desetnica, the street theatre festival, which reached 30 editions in 2026 and fills Oldest Vine Square, the Drava promenade and the town-centre streets with companies.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Maribor on Expedia and filter by area before price.
Tickets and free events
It depends on the event. The programme distinguishes ticketed shows, such as the big concerts, from free-entry ones, of which there are many. With tickets for a couple of things you really want to see and the rest of your evenings out on the street, you can enjoy the festival without spending much. Meanwhile, the house of the oldest vine in the world runs its own tastings during the festival.
Staying in Maribor for the festival
Accommodation is the key. The action is concentrated in the old town and on the riverside, and the hotels in Maribor in the centre and by the river are the most convenient because you can walk everywhere. I’d reserve the moment the programme is published, arrive the day before the concert you care about most and use the mornings for the castle, Pohorje or a trip to Ptuj.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Maribor and pick one that fits your day.
