Ljubljana bus station journey planner, checked on 17 October 2026. The station's tourism page quotes 21 departures Monday to Friday, 14 on Sundays and 7 on Saturdays; go by the timetable for your date.
I'd book the cave for mid-morning and pick a bus that gets in with an hour to spare. Predjama without a car is the awkward part; if you're not driving, an organised trip that covers that leg saves the headache.
The essentials in a few lines

What the official sites leave out
-
01 My tip
Two buses run to the cave itself
On Monday 19 October 2026 the 8am and 12.10pm departures ran through to the «Postojnska jama» stop by the park. The rest end in Postojna town; search for the cave as your destination.
Postojna -
02 Watch out
Official website only
The operator sells cave tickets only on its own site and warns about unofficial offers. You choose the date and time of your cave tour when you buy.
Postojna Cave -
03 To save money
Thirty days for the rest
With a package the cave is at a fixed time, and the other attractions can be visited during opening hours within the next 30 days. Predjama does not have to be the same day.
Predjama Castle -
04 Worth the splurge
A living nativity underground
From 25 to 30 December the cave stages its living nativity, with more than 500 performers among the stalactites, according to the Tourist Board.

05 Getting there

What I would book ahead
How long the bus takes
Between 47 minutes and 1 hour 12. On Monday 19 October 2026 there were 31 departures, the first at 5am and the last at 10.22pm, and most of the quick ones took 49 minutes. At weekends there are far fewer, 8 on Saturday 24 October and 14 on Sunday 25 October, so on a Saturday check the bus before you book your cave slot.
Coming back there are even more options on weekdays, 35 on Monday 19 October, but the last one left Postojna at 8.55pm. If you are stretching the afternoon at Predjama, that is the time to keep in mind.
The cave stop and the walk from town
Not every bus goes to the park. On Monday 19 October the 8am and 12.10pm departures ran through to the cave stop; the rest ended in Postojna, from where you walk. In the bus station’s planner, enter «Postojnska jama» as your destination to see the ones that stop outside. If you want to see the town too, it is covered in Postojna.
Tickets, time slots and the 30-day rule
Cave tickets are sold only on the official website, which warns about unofficial offers, and you choose a date and time when you buy. Adult packages ranged from €34.90 to €84.50 when I checked on 4 October, depending on whether they add the vivarium, the Expo Cave Karst exhibition or the castle, and the castle alone was €24. The most useful detail for me is that with a package the other attractions can be visited during opening hours within 30 days of your cave tour.
The Postojna Cave visit takes ninety minutes over some 5 km, partly on the railway that has run for more than 140 years. From 24 October to 1 November 2026 the park also sold family tickets, and from 25 to 30 December the living nativity is staged inside.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Postojna for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
Predjama without a car
That is the weak spot. Ljubljana bus station’s planner returned no service to Predjama when I checked, so for Predjama Castle I would drive or book an organised trip that covers that leg. It is worth the effort, wedged for more than 800 years into a 123-metre cliff, with tunnels leading to the cave below.
Driving from Ljubljana
By car, Postojna is the same distance from Ljubljana as Bled according to the Tourist Board, about 50 km, and with a car Predjama stops being a problem. You need the DARS e-vignette for the motorway and you drive on the right. If you are not driving, the bus is fine for the cave, and you will find the alternatives under day trips from Ljubljana.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Postojna for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
