Slovenia with kids, a country made to their scale

    Facts checked on
    Top pick
    The Postojna cave train
    Bled Castle
    €7 children, under-6s free

Travelling to Slovenia with kids works because distances are short and whatever thrills a child is an hour from the next thing. My favourite outings are the train into Postojna Cave, the rowing boat to Bled Island, the submarine at the Pivka military park, Kekec's land in Kranjska Gora and the thermal pools at Čatež, open all year.

    Is it worth it?

    Yes

Yes. Short distances, a cave train, boats, a submarine and year-round thermal pools make Slovenia one of the easiest countries in Europe to travel with children.

    My view

With children, I'd change the pace, not the destination. In Slovenia you can stay three or four nights in one place and do half-day trips, and that's what makes a family holiday work.

The essentials in a few lines

    Full read: 2 min

    • The highlights are the Postojna train, Bled's pletna and the Pivka submarine.
    • At Bled Castle children pay €7 and under-6s go free.
    • Terme Čatež has indoor and outdoor pools open all year.
    • Tap water is safe to drink across the country.

    The practical bit

Before you go to Slovenia, this

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      A train into the mountain

At Postojna the visit starts on a train that has been running into the cave for more than 140 years. The Tourist Board says no other karst cave has a railway, and it's home to the olm, an amphibian that can reach 100.

    2. 02 To save money

      Castles with child prices

Bled Castle charges €7 for children and nothing for under-6s. Ljubljana Castle has a family ticket with the funicular at €46 at the desk.

      Bled Castle
    3. 03 Worth the splurge

      Climbing inside a submarine

Pivka's Park of Military History has the P-913 submarine, which you can go inside, according to the Tourist Board. For a ten-year-old that's hard to beat.

    4. 04 My tip

      Pools for rainy days

Terme Čatež in Brežice is, according to the Tourist Board, the largest indoor and outdoor pool complex in Slovenia, and it's open all year. It's my fallback if the Alps get rained off.

      Terme Čatež

The Postojna train, the kids’ favourite

If I had to pick just one thing, this would be it. A visit to Postojna Cave starts on a train that has been running into the cave for more than 140 years, and the Tourist Board says no other karst cave has a railway. Living inside is the olm, a blind amphibian nicknamed the human fish that can reach 100 years old. The visit lasts an hour and a half and covers about 5 km, and it’s cool all year round, so pack a jacket. Close by is Predjama Castle, set into a 123-metre cliff, with the legend of the knight Erazem and a knights’ tournament every summer. How to buy tickets without resellers is in Postojna Cave.

Bled by boat and Kekec’s land

Bled has one thing children never tire of, the pletna, the rowing boat that takes you to the island, followed by the 99 steps to the church. The castle charges €7 for children and nothing for under-6s. In Kranjska Gora, Lake Jasna has a bronze ibex and a 6-metre lookout, and the Tourist Board presents Kekčeva dežela, the land of Josip Vandot’s character Kekec, as a place for little ones. At Planica, for older children, there’s a zipline down the ski-flying hill. I’ve laid out the whole valley in Kranjska Gora.

    A submarine, horses and shepherds

Pivka’s Park of Military History has a submarine, the P-913, that you can climb inside, and the Dina Large Carnivore Centre is in the same area. In the Karst, the Lipica stud farm, with more than 300 horses and guided tours, is another safe bet. And at Velika Planina, the herders’ settlement above Kamnik, children see wooden huts and try sour milk. There’s more on the submarine in the Park of Military History.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Kranjska Gora on Expedia and filter by area before price.

What to do with kids when it rains

That’s the worry with children in the Alps, and Slovenia has an answer. Terme Čatež in Brežice is, according to the Tourist Board, the country’s largest indoor and outdoor pool complex, open all year. In Ljubljana, the castle houses a Puppet Museum, and the family ticket with the funicular is €46 at the desk. I compare the other spas with water parks in spas in Slovenia.

    Prices and practicalities with kids

Tap water is drinkable everywhere according to the Tourist Board, the emergency number is 112 and the GHIC covers medically necessary care in the public system. In winter, Ljubljana’s festive December runs from 27 November 2026 to 14 January 2027, and Volčji Potok Arboretum holds evening walks among lights from 20 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. For me, though, the best time for a family trip is summer, with lakes to swim in and long evenings.
