The glass car of the Ljubljana Castle funicular climbing the hillside with passengers inside

    Quick answer

The Ljubljana Card, the city's tourist pass, lasts 24, 48 or 72 hours from first use and covers city buses, the castle funicular, a river cruise, a guided walk and more than thirty museums and sights. Several independent websites quoted adult prices of €41, €49 and €54 in 2026; I could not check the official site.

It pays off if you do the castle and three museums in one day.

The essentials in a few lines

    Full read: 2 min

    • The Ljubljana Card lasts 24, 48 or 72 hours from first use.
    • It covers buses, the funicular, a boat trip, a guided walk and over thirty sights.
    • In 2026 independent websites quoted €41, €49 and €54 for adults.
    • It pays off if you see the castle and at least three paid museums in a day.
    What I would do

For me the Ljubljana Card only makes sense on a packed day, castle by funicular plus at least three paid museums. If you're walking and seeing two sights, buy single tickets. And on the first Sunday of the month the National Museum and National Gallery are free anyway.

    Before you go

Before you go to Ljubljana, this

    1. 01 Money

      The sums for one day

The castle with the funicular costs €19, the National Museum €8, the National Gallery €10 and Plečnik House €12. With two bus rides that is about €52, against €41 for the 24-hour card.

    2. 02 My tip

The clock starts on first use

The card does not activate when you buy it but the first time you use it, at a museum entrance or on a bus. Plan that first use for early morning.

    3. 03 To save money

The first Sunday of the month

The National Museum and the National Gallery are free on the first Sunday of every month. On that day the card is much less of a bargain.

    4. 04 Getting there

If you only want the castle

If your plan is the castle and little else, just buy its ticket. Walking up the Študentovska pot path saves you the funicular fare.

What I would book for Ljubljana

Is it worth it? The sums, sight by sight

To see whether it pays, I add up the official prices of a busy day. Ljubljana Castle with the funicular costs €19, Plečnik House with its guided tour €12, the National Gallery €10 and the National Museum €8. With two €1.50 bus rides that comes to about €52, eleven more than the 24-hour card, and the boat trip is thrown in.

Then again, if you walk up to the castle, about ten minutes from the market, the ticket drops to €15, and if two museums are enough for you, the card stops paying off. Nor is it worth it on the first Sunday of the month, when the National Museum and the National Gallery are free. To plan, see my list of Ljubljana museums and how to get about in getting around Ljubljana.

    Ljubljana Card prices in 2026

Three independent guides, Travel Her Story, In Your Pocket and go2ljubljana.de, agree on €41 for the 24-hour card, €49 for 48 hours and €54 for 72 hours at the adult rate. Travel Her Story, which says it checked them in April 2026, also gives children’s prices for ages 6 to 14 of €26, €31 and €35. Under-6s do not need one, as they already travel and get in free almost everywhere. Some platforms charge a little more, such as Civitatis from €43, and older websites carry out-of-date figures.

You can buy it online, at the tourist office at Adamič-Lundrovo nabrežje 2, by the Triple Bridge, and at many hotels.

    What the Ljubljana Card includes

It is the official tourist pass of Ljubljana, run by the city’s tourist board. It has a chip and also comes as a digital version with a QR code stored on your phone. You choose 24, 48 or 72 hours, and the clock starts the first time you use it, at a museum or on a bus, not when you buy it.

According to the sources I checked, it includes unlimited LPP city buses while valid, the funicular and entry to the castle, a boat trip on the Ljubljanica, a guided walk round the centre, bike hire and entry to more than thirty museums, galleries and sights, among them the National Museum of Slovenia, the City Museum, the National Gallery, Plečnik House, the Natural History Museum and the zoo. Each sight allows one entry.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Ljubljana on Expedia and filter by area before price.

    Which card I’d choose

The 24-hour card is the most interesting, for a museum day that includes the castle. The 72-hour one makes sense if you are staying three days and using the bus a lot to get out of the centre. If you are wandering the old town and seeing one or two sights, skip the card. And if you want a plan, the Ljubljana in a day itinerary fits the 24-hour card nicely. If you are staying longer, the Ljubljana in two days itinerary gets good value from the 48-hour card.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Ljubljana on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

    Ljubljana Card: questions and answers

How much is the Ljubljana Card?

According to several independent websites, €41 for 24 hours, €49 for 48 and €54 for 72 for adults, and €26, €31 and €35 for children aged 6 to 14. Those sites checked the prices up to April 2026; the official site was not consulted, so confirm the price when you buy.

What does the Ljubljana Card include?

Unlimited LPP city buses, the funicular and entry to the castle, a boat trip on the Ljubljanica, a guided walk round the centre, bike hire and entry to more than thirty museums and sights, such as the National Museum, the National Gallery and Plečnik House.

    When does the card start?

On first use, not when you buy it. Once you validate it at a museum or on a bus you have 24, 48 or 72 consecutive hours. Each included sight can be visited once.

Where can I buy the Ljubljana Card?

Online, as a digital card with a QR code for your phone, at the tourist office at Adamič-Lundrovo nabrežje 2 and at many hotels. Platforms such as GetYourGuide and Civitatis sell it too, sometimes for a euro or two more.

Is the Ljubljana Card worth it?

Only if you make the most of the hours. In one day, the castle with the funicular, Plečnik House, the National Gallery, the National Museum and two bus rides add up to about €52, against €41 for the card. If you will see fewer than three paid sights, it does not pay off.

Do young children need a card?

No. Under-6s already travel free on city buses and get into most museums free of charge.
