Mojstrana, Triglav National Park
The Vrata valley, at the foot of Triglav's north face
- From
- Mojstrana
- To
- Triglav's north face, Aljažev dom hut
- North face
- About 3,000 m wide and 1,000 m high
The Vrata valley climbs from Mojstrana to Triglav's north face, a wall about 3,000 m wide and 1,000 m high: it's the largest glacial valley on the northern side of the Julian Alps. On the way are the Peričnik waterfall and the Galleries, and at the end the Aljažev dom hut. In summer 2026 a free bus ran from Mojstrana from 15 June to 30 September.
Even if you're not climbing, I'd go up to Aljažev dom just to see the wall. In season, first bus of the morning, the last stretch on foot along the Triglavska Bistrica trail and lunch at the hut facing the north face. By car, check the free spaces first.
Is Vrata valley worth it?
Yes
Yes, even without climbing. Standing under Triglav's north face at Aljažev dom is one of the great sights of the Julian Alps, and Peričnik waterfall is on the way.
Who will enjoy it and who will not
Yes, if…
- Walkers who want the Julian Alps without a summit
- Climbers heading for Triglav from the north
- Families happy with a long valley walk
Better not, if…
- Anyone wanting to drive up freely in peak season
- Anyone who wants a short stroll rather than a valley walk
My key points
What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
A thousand-metre wall
Triglav's north face is about 3,000 m wide and 1,000 m high, with around a hundred climbing routes, and is one of the most visited walls in the Julian Alps.
Mount Triglav -
02 To save money
The summer bus is free
In 2026 the valley bus was free from 15 June to 30 September, with a first van transfer at 4:00 for mountaineers and the regular service from 5:00.
Mojstrana -
03 My tip
Book a seat in high season
Since 2026 up to half the bus seats can be reserved at Na Prodih and Aljažev dom for €3 a seat, guaranteeing your ride up or down.
Kranjska Gora -
04 Getting there
Peričnik halfway up
On the way up the valley you pass the 52 m Peričnik waterfall, which you can walk behind, and the Galleries, conglomerate rocks hollowed out by the stream.
Peričnik waterfall
What I would book
Getting up there: bus, car or on foot
By car you drive a partly gravel, partly tarmac road, but the valley has a traffic regime and Tourism Kranjska Gora publishes the free parking spaces live. The sensible summer alternative is the bus. In 2026 it was free from 15 June to 30 September, with a first van transfer at 4:00 for mountaineers and the regular service from 5:00, and small dogs were allowed in a carrier bag. Since 2026 you can also reserve up to half the seats for €3 each.
Tourism Kranjska Gora suggests parking down at Na Prodih and going up by bus or on foot along the Triglavska Bistrica trail. That’s exactly what I’d do.
From Mojstrana to the wall: Peričnik and the Galleries
The valley starts at Mojstrana and climbs to the Aljažev dom hut. Halfway up is the Peričnik waterfall, with its two drops, and from there the path passes beneath the Galleries, hollow and sometimes overhanging conglomerate rocks that the Triglavska Bistrica stream has carved out over thousands of years. The path is well marked and not difficult, though it drips now and then.
Triglav’s north face
At the end the valley is closed off by the north face of Mount Triglav. It’s about 3,000 metres wide and 1,000 high, has around a hundred climbing routes and is one of the most popular walls in the Julian Alps. Climbers talk about the Čop pillar, the Sphinx and the Goldhorn ledges. It was here, below the wall, that on 26 August 2023, during the 31st Aljaž Days, Dovje and Mojstrana celebrated joining the network of mountaineering villages.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Mojstrana for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
The Aljažev dom hut and the routes
Aljažev dom is the starting point for routes to Triglav from the north, to Škrlatica, to Stenar and to the Kriški podi plateau, and the tourist board notes you can eat and stay the night there. If you’re fit but not after a summit, Tourism Kranjska Gora suggests climbing to Luknja, a 1,758-metre saddle on the western side of the wall, an ancient crossing between the Sava and Soča valleys.
The routes to the summits are high-mountain terrain and need proper preparation. If you’re considering one, I go over the basics in hiking in Slovenia.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Vrata valley on GetYourGuide.
