Dolenjske Toplice is a spa village of 985 people (3,666 in the municipality, SURS 1 January 2026) west of Novo mesto, a little over an hour's drive from Ljubljana. Terme Krka presents it as one of Europe's oldest spa resorts, and its thermal water rises from almost a thousand metres down. In 2025 it logged 129,288 overnight stays, nearly five per visitor.

    How I would do it

Dolenjske Toplice is a spa for staying put, not popping in. I'd come for three or four nights, mix the pools with walks by the Krka and an afternoon in Novo mesto, and pick the hotel to suit the trip, design-led or family-friendly.

What I would check before going

    Bookings I would make

    The practical bit

    My notes on Dolenjske Toplice

    1. 01 Worth the splurge

      A design hotel with concerts

Hotel Balnea, a four-star superior, was designed by Slovenian architects and artists and puts on performances by Slovenian musicians free for guests, according to Terme Krka.

    2. 02 To save money

      Longer stays, better value

Guests here stay almost five nights on average. Terme Krka's multi-night packages often work out cheaper than paying day by day, so compare before booking.

    3. 03 Most beautiful

      Dinner under the crystal chandelier

Hotel Kristal's restaurant serves food inspired by Dolenjska grandmothers' recipes beneath its famous crystal chandelier, according to Terme Krka.

    4. 04 Getting there

      Cycle between two spas

The tourist board suggests the Sava Krka Bike route through the vineyard hills between Šmarješke Toplice and Dolenjske Toplice.

      Šmarješke Toplice

A small village where people linger

According to SURS, Dolenjske Toplice has 985 people in the village and 3,666 in the municipality on 1 January 2026. Over 2025 it logged 26,983 arrivals and 129,288 overnight stays, almost five nights per visitor. That’s a long average for Dolenjska, and it tells you the kind of trip it is, more a restful week than a quick break.

What’s special about the thermal water

The tourist board explains that Dolenjska’s thermal water rises from almost a thousand metres underground. Terme Krka, which runs the resort, presents Dolenjske Toplice as one of the oldest spa resorts in Europe and uses the water in its pools, baths and wellness and health treatments, alongside a medical rehabilitation centre.

The heart of the complex is the Vitarium Spa & Beauty, with thermal pools, baths, massages and saunas, plus an aesthetic medicine clinic. For children there’s Balnea FUN, with four water slides, a play area and splash pools.

    Three hotels, three styles

Hotel Balnea, a four-star superior, was designed by Slovenian architects and artists, and Terme Krka claims it’s one of the top seven wellness hotels in Europe. Guests get free concerts by Slovenian musicians. Hotel Kristal has a restaurant beneath a large crystal chandelier, with cooking inspired by Dolenjska grandmothers. The third is Hotel Vital. For tighter budgets, the tourist board also lists a campsite.

At the Balnea the restaurant is modern, with a terrace beside a reflecting pool, and the resort’s kitchen blends traditional recipes with current thinking on balanced nutrition. For anyone who wants to switch off, Terme Krka runs Zen-inspired mindfulness programmes and an anti-stress package of meditation and massage. Children get entertainment from Teddy the Bear, the resort’s mascot, on top of the slides.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Dolenjske Toplice before prices climb.

What to do away from the pools

The tourist board suggests calling in at the Berryshka distillery and chocolatier, tasting honey from a local beekeeper or sampling wine in nearby cellars. By bike, the Sava Krka Bike route crosses the vineyard hills between here and Šmarješke Toplice. And Novo mesto, with its situlae and its river, is close by.

    Fitting it in

I’d come for three or four nights, which is what these spas deserve, and alternate the pools with trips to the Krka river and Novo mesto. Compared with other spas in Slovenia, this is one of the quieter ones. Heading back towards Ljubljana, stop at Trebnje, built over the Roman town of Praetorium Latobicorum.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Dolenjske Toplice and choose by the reviews.
