Planica, the valley where people fly on skis

    Facts checked on

Planica is the valley at Rateče with the Gorišek Brothers ski-flying hill, scene of more than 40 world records, and it hosts the Ski Jumping World Cup final from 18 to 21 March 2027. The rest of the year you visit on foot, as it's closed to cars, with the Nordic Centre museum, the wind tunnel, a 566 m zipline down the hill and the walk to Tamar.

    My view
    Sergio Lepone

If you like sport, I'd come in March for a day of the final with the Slovenian crowd. In summer I'd ride the zipline and then walk on to the Tamar hut, the loveliest part of the valley.

    1. Planica Ski Jumping World Cup Final 2027

      Planica, Rateče

    The 2027 ski jumping final

From 18 to 21 March 2027, Planica closes the ski jumping season once again. There will be four competitions, including the second women’s event on the Gorišek Brothers hill, with the men’s and women’s events spread from Thursday to Sunday. Saturday is the fullest day, with the men’s team event in the morning and the women’s individual in the afternoon. Times are in the table.

Off the hill there are concerts at the Planica arena and events in Rateče and Kranjska Gora. On the Thursday a parade of national teams welcomes the jumpers in Rateče, and on Friday evening the bibs are handed out in Kranjska Gora’s Winners’ Square. The 2026 edition made history, as women flew on the big hill for the first time and Nika Prevc set the women’s world record at 242.5 metres.

What to see at Planica out of season

Without a competition, the Nordic Centre stays open. The central building houses the Planica Museum, covering Slovenian Nordic skiing, the technical development of the jumps and the kit of each era, with two jump simulators, a station where you can try judging jumps and holograms in which you can interview Peter Prevc or Franci Petek. There’s also an exhibition of Peter Prevc’s trophies, including his crystal globes and the 2015-2016 golden eagle.

The zipline down the ski-flying hill

For thrill-seekers, the Planica zipline runs down the ski-flying hill. Over its 566 metres you reach 85 km/h almost at once, and the Slovenian Tourist Board bills it as the world’s steepest. There’s also a wind tunnel to feel what flying is like, a disc golf course and an augmented reality game across the valley. And if you bring cross-country skis, you can use them here in any season, even in midsummer.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Kranjska Gora before prices climb.

The valley, on foot to Tamar

Planica isn’t just the ski jumps. The valley is closed to traffic and you walk in from Rateče, first through uneven meadows and then into the forest, on ground covered in glacial moraine. All around rise peaks of up to 2,500 metres, Mojstrovka, Travnik, Velika Dnina, the Ponca range and Jalovec, and at the end is the Tamar hut, a good place for lunch. In winter the cross-country trails run from Tamar to Kranjska Gora.

The practical base is Kranjska Gora, and if you’re coming for the March final, book as soon as you have a ticket, because the valley fills up.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Planica and choose by the reviews.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Kranjska Gora before prices climb.
