Brezje basilica, the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians, is Slovenia's national shrine and a place of pilgrimage since 1863, with a façade by architect Ivan Vurnik and a square by Jože Plečnik. Next door, a modern museum holds more than 500 nativity scenes from around the world. The village has 525 people (SURS) and belongs to Radovljica municipality.

    How I would do it

Even if you're not coming for religious reasons, Brezje is worth the stop for Vurnik's and Plečnik's architecture and for the nativity museum, which is a genuine surprise. I'd pair it with Kropa and Radovljica in one morning.

    My key points

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Most beautiful

Vurnik and Plečnik on one square

The basilica's façade was designed by Ivan Vurnik, one of Radovljica's notable sons, and the square in front by Jože Plečnik, the architect of Ljubljana.

    2. 02 Worth the splurge

More than 500 nativity scenes from around the world

The nativity museum beside the basilica traces the history of the crib with Slovenian, European and further-flung pieces, and is open all year.

      On the Radol'ca trail

Brezje is in Radovljica municipality, a few kilometres from the honey town's old centre and from Kropa, the blacksmiths' village.

      Old pilgrim paths

Around the basilica there's a park and old pilgrimage paths that the tourist board suggests walking.

    What I would book

    Brezje basilica, Slovenia’s national shrine

The Slovenian Tourist Board presents the basilica as the national shrine and highlights the work of the Slovenian architects who shaped it. The façade was designed by Ivan Vurnik, one of Radovljica’s notable citizens, and the square in front by Jože Plečnik, the great architect of Ljubljana, whose Ljubljana works are World Heritage. Beside the basilica there’s a green park to rest in, and old pilgrimage paths lead off on foot.

In the inner atrium, along the wide monastery corridor, there’s a permanent exhibition of work by the academic painter Nikolaj Mašukov. Whatever your own faith, the visit is worth it for its architectural and cultural value.

    Brezje’s nativity museum

Next to the basilica, a modern museum gathers more than 500 nativity scenes given to Brezje from all over the world, and it’s open all year. The first part explains the history of nativity scenes, the tools used to make them and the different types, Christmas, Passion, Pentecost and Resurrection. Then come traditional Slovenian cribs, which in the past were set up at Christmas in the so-called God’s corner of the home.

After that are scenes made by Slovenians and others from across Europe and further afield, and a film about nativity scenes in wartime and today. The new part of the museum is devoted to large scenes you can step into, and the visit ends with reproductions of the Greccio frescoes, St Francis of Assisi’s first nativity, lit through burnt lace to create a play of light and shadow.

Brezje, Kropa and Radovljica in a morning

Brezje is very close to Radovljica and Kropa, so the natural plan is to do all three in a morning or in a relaxed day out from Bled. In July and August the free shuttle bus between Bled and Radovljica gets you to the area quite easily, though for Brezje and Kropa a car is the most practical option. The museum’s hours and prices are in the table; the official listing didn’t give the individual adult price, so it’s worth calling ahead.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Radovljica before prices climb.

    Why I’d stop here

To me Brezje is a cultural stop more than a religious one, for the architecture of Vurnik and Plečnik and for a nativity museum that surprises everyone. A good hour is plenty for the basilica, the square and the museum.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Radovljica and choose by the reviews.
