    About eight months a year
    Birds

Lake Cerknica is an intermittent lake: it appears every year on the Cerknica polje, lasts about eight months, and in the dry season it vanishes and the same ground is mown for hay. With water it covers about 20 km², and when full about 26 km², which makes it the largest lake in Slovenia. You visit it from the Dolenje Jezero centre, on foot, by bike or, when there's enough water, by canoe.

    What I would do

Before going I'd check the water level on the park's website, because everything depends on it. With the lake full I'd hire a canoe; if it's low, as on 17 October 2026 when boating was banned, I'd ride round the shore by bike.

Who will enjoy it and who will not

    Yes, if…

    • Birdwatchers, with 303 species recorded
    • Anyone curious about how karst water works
    • Cyclists happy with flat, quiet roads

    Better not, if…

    • Anyone expecting a lake you can count on all year
    • Travellers short of time who only want a swim

    My key points

    My notes on Lake Cerknica

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      The cradle of karstology

Valvasor studied the lake's hydrology and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society for it. Terms such as polje and intermittent lake come from here.

    2. 02 My tip

      Boating depends on the water

In the central area boating stops once the level drops below 150 cm at Dolenje Jezero, and in the eastern part it is banned from 1 March to 15 June for the bird nesting season.

    3. 03 To save money

      Family ticket

The lake's visitor centre has a family ticket, for two adults and children up to 18, at €20.

    4. 04 Getting there

      Cerknica, the base

The town of Cerknica sits right by the lake, with Rakov Škocjan and Mount Slivnica close at hand.

    What I would book

Why Lake Cerknica comes and goes

The lake forms every year on the Cerknica polje, wedged between the Javorniki hills and the Bloke plateau on one side and Mount Slivnica on the other. It usually stays for about eight months a year. When it holds water it normally covers about 20 km², and at its highest about 26 km², when it becomes the largest lake in Slovenia. In the dry season it disappears, so that in the same place and within a single year you can paddle, fish, walk or mow the grass.

The water comes and goes through the limestone underground. Among the park’s 50 natural features of national importance are the lake’s systems of sinkholes, such as Vodonos, Retje and Rešeto.

Visiting the lake: centre, canoe and bike

The best place to start is the visitor centre in Dolenje Jezero, which closes on Mondays and, from October to March, opens Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm, with admission at €9. In the same village the Kebe family runs the Museum of Lake Cerknica, with a working model that shows how the lake fills and empties and with the lake’s traditional boat, the drevak; it is visited by booking.

To go out on the water, check the level first. Rowing boats up to 6 m, kayaks, canoes, sailing boats and boards are allowed, but in the central area boating is banned when the level drops below 150 cm at Dolenje Jezero, as it was on 17 October 2026. From April to September, with enough water, canoes can be hired at weekends from €12 an hour.

    Birds and wildlife

What draws me most to the lake is its life. 303 bird species have been recorded here, half of Europe’s total, along with 45 species of mammal, 125 of diurnal butterfly and 15 of amphibian. There are even three carnivorous plants. In the nesting season a quiet zone is marked out in the narrower parts of the lake so the birds can breed undisturbed.

Valvasor and the cradle of karstology

The lake has been mentioned since antiquity and has appeared on maps of Europe since the 15th century. Its hydrology was first studied by the natural historian Johann Weikhard von Valvasor, whose work on it earned him a Fellowship of the Royal Society. The park calls it the cradle of karstology, because terms such as polje and intermittent lake come from here. Today it is protected as a Ramsar wetland and under Natura 2000, and lies within the Notranjska Regional Park, in the municipality of Cerknica.

    Getting to Cerknica

From Ljubljana it is about an hour by car, and there are buses to Cerknica from Ljubljana and from Postojna. By train, get off at Rakek, about 10 km away, and follow a waymarked trail to the lake on foot or by bike. For other sights nearby, see Notranjska and lakes in Slovenia.

    Lake Cerknica: questions and answers

When does Lake Cerknica have water?

It usually sits on the polje for about eight months a year. The park says spring and autumn are best, when it is full; in summer it often dries out. It is worth checking the level on its website before you go.

    How big is Lake Cerknica?

When it holds water it normally covers about 20 km², and when full about 26 km². At that point it is the largest lake in Slovenia.

Can you go boating on the lake?

Yes, in rowing boats up to 6 m long, kayaks, canoes, sailing boats and boards, as long as the level allows. In the central area it is banned when the level falls below 150 cm at Dolenje Jezero, and in the eastern area from 1 March to 15 June.

Where should I start my visit?

At the lake's visitor centre, at Dolenje Jezero 68. It closes on Mondays; from October to March it opens Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm, and admission is €9.

    Why does the lake disappear?

Because it lies in a karst polje. Water enters and leaves through the limestone underground, through sinkholes such as Vodonos, Retje and Rešeto, and in the dry season the lake drains away.

    Where do you park?

There are several car parks in Cerknica and by the lake. The Jezero car park charges on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, with the first hour free and then €2 an hour, and is free on weekdays.
