Festive December in Ljubljana 2026
Ljubljana city centre
Ljubljana's Christmas market has no single site, as the stalls spread along the Ljubljanica and through the central squares during Festive December, which in 2026 runs from 27 November, when the lights go on by the Prešeren Monument at 5pm, to 14 January 2027. Entry is free, the concerts cost nothing and fireworks go up from Castle Hill on New Year's Eve.
The essentials in a few lines
Full read: 3 min
- Festive December in Ljubljana runs from 27 November 2026 to 14 January 2027.
- The lights go on at 5pm on the first day beside the Prešeren Monument.
- Stalls line the Ljubljanica and the central squares, and the concerts are free.
- On New Year's Eve there are parties in four squares and fireworks from Castle Hill.
I'd go on the switch-on weekend or between Boxing Day and 2 January, when there are more concerts. Book a hotel near the Triple Bridge early and leave the car parked, as you'll do it all on foot.

The 2026 programme was not out on 17 October 2026, apart from the Tourist Board's overall dates. Rows marked 2025 show how the season is usually run.
What I would book ahead
- Places to stayBooking.com A central hotel for the market The stalls and concerts are in the pedestrian centre; stay there and you walk back after the fireworks or the last concert.
- Tours and ticketsGetYourGuide Guided festive walk in Ljubljana The city runs walks with mulled wine through the lit streets; a guided walk makes sense if you only have one evening.
Step by step
-
Pick your weekend
The switch-on weekend starts on Friday 27 November 2026 at 5pm; the days between Christmas and New Year have the fullest concert programme.
-
Book a central hotel
Everything happens within ten minutes' walk of the Triple Bridge, so a hotel in the centre saves you buses and taxis on cold evenings.
-
Follow the river past the stalls
In 2025 the stalls ran along the Breg, the Cankarjevo and Gallusovo embankments, Congress Square and Prešeren Square, so walking downriver covers most of them.
-
See the year out below Castle Hill
At midnight on 31 December fireworks go up from Castle Hill, so the old town squares are the place to be.

01 Most beautiful
Urban Modic's light installations
The 2025 display, titled «In relation to proportion», mixed new pieces by Urban Modic with restored originals from Zmago Modic's «Universal Ljubljana». The theme changes each year; the designer does not.

02 To save money
Free buses on the key dates
In 2025 the city made zone 1 buses free on the switch-on evening and from 5pm between 26 December and 2 January, with free park and ride at the same times. You still have to tap in.

03 My tip
A life-size nativity at the castle
St George's Chapel at the castle shows a nativity of life-size wooden figures by Mira Rismondo. In winter 2025-26 it stayed up until 2 February.
Ljubljana Castle -
04 Worth the splurge
The lit-up river by boat
In 2025 sightseeing boats cruised the decorated Ljubljanica from 5 December to 6 January. It is the calmest way to see the lights without the crowds on the embankments.

05 Getting there
Stay near the Triple Bridge
The stalls fill the embankments and squares between the Triple Bridge and Congress Square, so a city centre hotel lets you walk back at any hour.
where to stay in Ljubljana
Where is the Christmas market in Ljubljana?
There is no single site, which is what I like most about it. In 2025 the gift huts were on Breg and the food and drink stalls ran along Breg, the Cankarjevo and Gallusovo embankments, Congress Square, Prešeren Square, Stritarjeva Street and the corner of Wolfova Street. Pogačar Square, next to the market, and the castle courtyard had their own stalls. That makes the natural route a walk downstream from the Triple Bridge and back through Ljubljana Old Town.
The castle deserves its own trip up. In 2025 its market opened daily from 11am to 6pm until 6 January, with more than ninety decorated firs, and St George’s Chapel showed Mira Rismondo’s nativity of life-size wooden figures until 2 February. If you want to add the tower and the museums, Ljubljana Castle has the prices and the ways up.
How I would plan a festive weekend
Flying in from the UK for a long weekend, I would arrive on the switch-on Friday or go between Christmas and New Year, when there are more concerts. Saturday morning for the castle and the nativity, the afternoon for the walk along the huts and, after dark, one of the boats that in 2025 cruised the decorated river from 5 December to 6 January. The guided walk with mulled wine or tea, offered in 2025 from 29 November to 6 January, is a good first evening.
Staying central changes the trip, because you walk back at any hour and do not depend on buses. The neighbourhoods are weighed up in where to stay in Ljubljana.
The switch-on on 27 November
By tradition the lights go on at 5pm on the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent, next to the Prešeren Monument. There is a short ceremony, the mayor speaks and a countdown ends with every decoration in town lit at once. In 2025 that was 28 November, and zone 1 buses were free from 4pm, with extra services on the main roads into the centre.
The designer is Urban Modic, and the idea changes every winter. The 2025 display was about the golden ratio and different beings living in harmony, and it reused restored pieces of «Universal Ljubljana», the series his father Zmago Modic created. The city spent €265,000 on decorating and lighting the streets. Ten Christmas trees completed the picture, the main one 18 m tall with around 8 km of lights on Prešeren Square, plus 89 living trees that went back into the ground after the holidays.

Concerts, children’s events and New Year’s Eve
The 2025 programme put music on five stages. Pogačar Square had acts from 28 November to 31 December; Novi trg from 15 to 25 December; Mestni trg had school choirs, the Christmas Eve concert and the New Year party; and Congress Square, the main New Year’s Eve venue, started on 26 December. For children there was the Magic Forest workshops, parades for St Nicholas, the Ice Queen and Grandfather Frost, and street theatre outside the Puppet Theatre.
On the 31st the youngest start early, with a party at 4pm and a symbolic New Year at 5pm on Congress Square. At 9pm the parties begin in four squares, the countdown is projected on the castle tower and at midnight there are five minutes of fireworks from the hill. In 2025 buses ran all night, and from 26 December to 2 January zone 1 travel was free after 5pm, park and ride included. I explain tickets and the Urbana card in getting around Ljubljana.
Still to be confirmed
On 17 October 2026 the city had already opened the call for stallholders at the 2026 St Nicholas Fair and Festive Fair, but not the programme. The Tourist Board’s dates are the ones to go by; the times of each concert, the boat trips and whether buses will be free again in 2026 will go on this page as soon as they are out. Wherever a figure in the tables is from 2025, the row says so.

Christmas in Ljubljana: questions and answers
When is the Ljubljana Christmas market in 2026?
The Tourist Board lists Festive December from 5pm on 27 November 2026 to 14 January 2027. The market opens with the lights switch-on, as it did on 28 November in 2025.
Where is the Christmas market in Ljubljana?
It is spread across the centre rather than in one square. In 2025 the gift stalls were on Breg and the food and drink huts on Breg, the Cankarjevo and Gallusovo embankments, Congress Square, Prešeren Square, Stritarjeva Street and by Wolfova Street, plus Pogačar Square and the castle courtyard.
When do the Christmas lights go on in Ljubljana?
Traditionally on the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent, at 5pm, beside the Prešeren Monument. For 2026 the Tourist Board starts Festive December on 27 November at that time.
Are there fireworks in Ljubljana on New Year's Eve?
Yes. In 2025 there were five minutes of fireworks from Castle Hill at midnight, parties from 9pm in four central squares and buses running all night.
Is Ljubljana worth visiting at Christmas?
I think it is one of the nicest Decembers in central Europe because of its size. Everything fits into one walk, the square concerts are free and it feels more like locals out for the evening than a coach-party market.
How cold is Ljubljana in December?
Cold. Official statistics give Ljubljana a January average of 0.4°C (2001-2010), the month the festive season ends. Pack a warm coat, a hat and shoes that cope with wet paving.
How do I get from the airport to the Christmas market?
Ljubljana's Jože Pučnik Airport is at Brnik, north of the city, with shuttles, licensed taxis and buses into town. The market is in the pedestrian centre, a short walk from most central hotels.
