    Lake Podpeč
    51 m deep

Brezovica is the central municipality of the Ljubljana Marshes, with 13,202 people and 91.1 km² south-west of the capital; its main town, Brezovica pri Ljubljani, has 3,230. What's worth seeing lies on its southern edge: Lake Podpeč, 51 m deep, one of Slovenia's deepest natural lakes, and the St Anne viewpoint. Higher up is the Rakitna plateau.

    How I would do it

I'd climb to St Anne's for the view over the marshes, then drop down to Lake Podpeč, where you can swim in summer. By bike, the ride up to Rakitna is tough, but I'd do it.

    What I would book

    My key points

    My notes on Brezovica

    1. 01 Most beautiful

A river moved by the Romans

The Romans diverted the Ljubljanica towards Podpeč to make it easier to ship its stone. The old riverbed, about 6 km long, still fills up now and then.

    2. 02 My tip

      Swimming at Podpeč

Almost round Lake Podpeč has a natural bathing area and a restaurant beside it. It is a natural monument, so treat its shores with care.

    3. 03 Getting there

      The pile dwellings opposite

Across the marshes, near Ig, are the prehistoric pile dwellings that Janez Jalen turned into fiction in «Bobri».

      Balloons over the marshes

Vnanje Gorice is home to Slovenia's first hot-air ballooning centre, because the marshes are ideal for flying over.

    Brezovica and the Ljubljana Marshes

Brezovica has 13,202 people and covers 91.1 km², and it was created in 1994. It is the central municipality of the Ljubljana Marshes, which take up a third of its territory, with solitary hills, the Ljubljanica and plenty of protected nature. Brezovica pri Ljubljani, the main town, is recorded in 1341, but the Roman road from Emona to Nauportus already ran through here. Its baroque church of St Anthony the Hermit is documented from 1526 and has paintings by Ivan Šubic. The marshes are part of the Ljubljana Marshes landscape park, protected since 2008.

What to see: Lake Podpeč and St Anne

On the southern edge of the marshes lies Lake Podpeč, almost round and 51 m deep, one of the deepest natural lakes in Slovenia. It is a natural monument, fed by karst springs, with a bathing area and a restaurant in summer. Above the Podpeč quarry rises St Anne, with its church and a platform from which, according to the municipality, you get the best view of the marshes, from Vrhnika to Škofljica.

    Romans, stone and Bobri

The Romans diverted the Ljubljanica towards Podpeč to make it easier to ship its stone, and the old bed, about 6 km long, still comes to life now and then between Notranje Gorice and Podpeč. On Gulč hill, the church of the Holy Spirit, from 1526, has frescoes on tufa by Izidor Mole. Notranje Gorice was the parish of the writer Janez Jalen, who in «Bobri» told the story of the pile dwellers, like those at Ig.

    Gardens, balloons and Rakitna

At Vnanje Gorice is the Zahostnik garden, one of the richest ornamental gardens in the country, with hostas and peonies, and Slovenia’s first hot-air ballooning centre. Notranje Gorice has a 30 m ski jump designed by Stanko Bloudek. To the south, in the Krim karst, the Rakitna plateau is known for its healthy climate and its lake.

    Getting to Brezovica

Brezovica pri Ljubljani lies by the motorway and the railway towards the coast, and roads lead from it to Podpeč and Rakitna. By the Ljubljanica at Podpeč there is a recreation area with kayaks, canoes and boats for the river, and trails to Krim start from Preserje station. The Krim dormouse hunters’ society even runs a small museum. Everything else in the region is in the guide to central Slovenia.
