The Kozjak waterfall drops 15 m inside what looks like a stone chamber, in the gorge of the Kozjak stream close to Kobarid. An easy half-hour path with wooden walkways leads from the car park to a terrace above the green pool, where swimming isn't allowed. In the 2026 season, from 1 April to 31 October, entry cost €5; from November to March there's no collection point.

    What I would do

Kozjak is worth it even if you're short of time, because the walk is short. In season I'd go first thing, when the ticket point opens and it's still quiet, and pair it with the Kobarid Historical Trail if I had the morning free.

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      The stone chamber

The water falls into an amphitheatre of dark walls coated in limestone deposits, like a cave, and the Slovenian Tourist Board calls it the most mysterious of the country's waterfalls.

    3. 03 Worth the splurge

      Six falls, two to see

The stream rises below Krnčica, at 2,142 m, and runs through several pools and six waterfalls, but only two can be visited, Veliki Kozjak and the 8 m Mali Kozjak.

      On the Historical Trail

The waterfall is one of the stops on the Kobarid Historical Trail, which links First World War remains with Napoleon's Bridge.

    Where the Kozjak waterfall is

The waterfall lies in the gorge of the Kozjak stream, above the bank of the Soča and very close to Kobarid, below the Krn range. The stream rises from several springs under Krnčica, at 2,142 m, and drops through pools and six waterfalls, of which only two can be visited, Veliki Kozjak, the big one at 15 m, and Mali Kozjak, at 8 m. The whole stream and its falls are protected as a natural asset.

The walk from the car park

From Kobarid, head towards Drežnica and take the turning for Napoleon’s Bridge over the Soča. A maintained path leaves the car park, with small wooden footbridges in places, and ends on a terrace overlooking the rock amphitheatre. It’s a short, easy walk and fine for families.

The waterfall is also a stop on the Kobarid Historical Trail, which links remains of the Isonzo Front, and the Soča Valley Tourist Board suggests a longer route along the Soča and through the Kobarid gorge to the village of Magozd and Kozjak. If the valley’s history interests you, the Kobarid Museum is the best place to start.

    Tickets and season

During the season there’s a collection point at the entrance asking for a fee for the use of the infrastructure, on behalf of the Municipality of Kobarid. Groups don’t need to book. Prices and monthly hours are in the table, and holders of the Julian Alps Card for the Soča Valley get in free.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Kobarid on Expedia and filter by area before price.

    Why you can’t swim

The high walls hold the cool air, which makes Kozjak a good walk on hot days, but the pool isn’t suitable for bathing. The Soča Valley Tourist Board asks visitors to keep the place as it is for others and to swim only in the areas beside the Soča, Nadiža and Idrijca. If you want water to swim in, there are pools on the Soča river itself where it’s allowed.

    Other waterfalls near Kobarid

In the same valley are the Boka waterfall, between Bovec and Žaga, much taller and more powerful, and Virje, near Bovec. All three fit into a day by car, and the guide to waterfalls in Slovenia covers the rest of the country.
