Vransko, a village of 823 people in the lower Savinja valley by the Ljubljana-Celje motorway, is known for the Grom motorcycle museum: a private collection founded in 1997 with more than 150 machines, from early 20th-century Puch bikes to racers, including the Welbike, the smallest military motorcycle, and a huge Zündapp with a sidecar.

    How I would do it

If you're on the motorway between Ljubljana and Celje and love machines, I'd stop in Vransko for a good hour. I'd check the opening times on the museum's website first and ask about a ride in the Zündapp with its sidecar.

    My notes on Vransko

    1. 01 Worth the splurge

      A ride in a sidecar

The huge, fully armed German Zündapp with sidecar is on display and visitors can sometimes take a ride in it, according to the Ministry of Culture's culture portal.

    2. 02 Most beautiful

      Slovenia's first motorcycle

The collection includes the first motorcycle built in Slovenia and early 20th-century Puch machines, the brand founded by Slovene Janez Puh.

    3. 03 My tip

      A 204 km/h Tomos

The museum displays the Tomos DM GP, a 50 cc racer that reached 204 km/h thanks to its light build and aerodynamics, according to the museum.

    4. 04 Getting there

On the way up the valley

From Vransko the road climbs the Savinja valley towards Nazarje, Gornji Grad and Logar Valley.

      Nazarje

    The Grom motorcycle museum

It’s a private collection founded in 1997 to preserve historic motorcycles and record the engineering achievements of the last century, according to the Ministry of Culture’s culture portal. It has kept growing, and the museum now speaks of more than 150 motorcycles from over 20 makes across Europe, America and Asia, from 1900 to the present, plus thousands of items in display cases.

There’s something for every taste. Early 20th-century Puch machines, from the brand founded by Slovene Janez Puh, and the first motorcycle built in Slovenia. Among the Americans, a Harley-Davidson, an Indian and a curious Ner-A-Car that looks like a car. The military bikes range from the tiny Welbike, the smallest army motorcycle, to a huge German Zündapp with sidecar, which visitors can sometimes ride in. And there’s the Tomos DM GP, a 50 cc racer that hit 204 km/h.

In 2024 the collection received the Slovenian President’s Medal of Merit for its work preserving technical heritage. The museum explains that it restores each bike with original parts.

    The army’s smallest motorcycle

Among the pieces that stand out is the Welbike, which the Ministry of Culture’s portal describes as the smallest army motorcycle, set against the huge German Zündapp with its sidecar. The American models, such as the Indian and the Ner-A-Car, show how the future of two wheels was imagined back then. The display cases add helmets, number plates, posters and other memorabilia that fill in the story around the machines.

    Is it worth the stop?

To me it’s one of those private collections that exist through their owner’s passion, and it shows. No expertise is needed to enjoy it, because every bike has a story and many tell the country’s story too, from Puch to Tomos.

An hour on the way to Celje

A good hour is enough. I’d combine it with a day in the Savinja valley or a stop in Celje. Opening times and prices are on the museum’s website, and if you enjoy quirky museums in Slovenia, this is a good one.

Vransko, at the mouth of the valley

According to SURS, Vransko has 823 residents and its municipality 2,792 on 1 January 2026, spread over 16 settlements. Last year it logged 13,078 arrivals and 22,115 overnight stays. It’s the gateway to the Savinja valley for anyone coming from Ljubljana, and from here the road climbs towards Nazarje, Gornji Grad and Logar Valley, in Savinjska.
