Trnovo is Plečnik's neighbourhood in Ljubljana, south of the centre on the Ljubljanica: the architect lived here from 1921 and his house museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, by guided tour for €12. It also has the Trnovo Bridge, World Heritage since 2021, and it's a walk from the old town along the river embankment.
I'd come to Trnovo mid-afternoon for the guided tour of Plečnik House and walk back into town along the embankment as the lights come on. Until 24 January 2027 the house also has the Ana Sluga exhibition.

The practical bit
Worth knowing about Trnovo
-
01 Most beautiful
The architect's house with a tower
Plečnik moved into a Trnovo house in 1921 and soon added a cylindrical tower with two round rooms. He later bought the neighbouring houses and created a garden and a winter garden, the City Museum says.

Exhibition «Ginkgo biloba, prišlek» by Ana Sluga
Plečnik House, Ljubljana
Plečnik House
Plečnik settled in a Trnovo house at 4 Karunova Street in 1921. According to the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana, he had pictured his life as «a tower, a mule, me and the garden». The mule never arrived, but the tower did, a cylindrical annexe with two round rooms on two floors. He then bought the neighbouring houses and added a garden and a winter garden. Much of his work was conceived there.
Renovated between 2013 and 2015, the house is now a museum, with his studio full of instruments and plans and a permanent exhibition on his work in Vienna, Prague and above all Ljubljana. Tours of the home are always guided and start on the hour. I cover the details, prices included, on the Plečnik House page, along with what to look out for in the studio.
The house is far from static. From 16 October 2026 to 24 January 2027 it hosts «Ginkgo biloba, prišlek» by the artist Ana Sluga, part of a series in which contemporary artists respond to the architect’s rooms. And at the end of May the garden opens its traditional library under the treetops, with books to read in the shade of Plečnik’s century-old trees.
The Trnovo Bridge and the Green Promenade
The Trnovo Bridge is one of the seven components of Plečnik’s Ljubljana inscribed as World Heritage in 2021. According to UNESCO, it is where the land axis of his plan begins, the Green Promenade that crosses French Revolution Square, climbs Vegova Street and ends at Congress Square. Trnovo is also the start of the water axis, the embankments and bridges that follow the river to the Sluice Gate.
Walking to Trnovo
On foot, along the embankment of the Ljubljanica river. The Trnovski pristan embankment is part of that walk, and the Urban tourist train passes along it on its city loop, says Ljubljana Castle. The castle also places Plečnik House in the neighbouring Krakovo district, which tells you how closely the two areas run together along the water.

Is Trnovo worth it?
For anyone who has seen the centre and wants to understand why Ljubljana looks so unlike other capitals. And for those who want to stay by the river away from the old-town bustle. I would pair it in an afternoon with the embankment and Ljubljana’s old town, finishing at the Triple Bridge.
