Žirovnica, between Bled and Jesenice below the Karawanks, is the birthplace of the poet France Prešeren: his house in Vrba has been a museum since 1939. The Path of Cultural Heritage links it with the houses of the philologist Matija Čop and the beekeeper Anton Janša, whose apiary at Breznica is free to visit. Above lie Ajdna, the Završnica valley and Stol. It has 4,515 people.

    How I would do it

I'd see Žirovnica by bike on the Path of Cultural Heritage, which follows quiet roads. I'd start at Prešeren's house in Vrba and, on a clear day, save the afternoon for the walk up to Ajdna, with Bled at your feet.

What I would book for Žirovnica

    Prešeren’s birthplace in Vrba

Slovenia’s greatest poet, France Prešeren, spent his childhood in Vrba, in a typical 16th-century farmhouse. The present house dates from 1856, when it was rebuilt after a fire, and it has been a museum since 1939. The Žirovnica tourist board says it was the first house of a famous Slovenian to become a museum and that it was declared a monument of national importance in 2011. Inside, it recreates daily life in the 19th century, when the poet lived there. Hours and prices are in the table; it’s closed on Mondays and over Christmas and New Year.

The Path of Cultural Heritage: Janša and Čop

There was an apiary in Breznica almost 300 years ago. Here Anton Janša, the pioneer of modern beekeeping, opened his father’s hives as a child to watch the bees, and his knowledge so impressed Empress Maria Theresa in Vienna that he became the first beekeeping teacher at the imperial court. His birthday, 20 May, has been World Bee Day since the United Nations declared it in 2018. The apiary, built around 1734, reconstructed in 1965 and restored in 2017 with a thatched roof and clay floors, shows the painted hive panels typical of Slovenian apiaries, and entry is free. If you’re interested, the Radovljica beekeeping museum is close by.

Matija Čop, the first Slovenian philologist and Prešeren’s friend and mentor, grew up in Žirovnica’s old village centre, and his birth house holds the tourist information point. Finžgar’s house in Doslovče is one of the finest examples of rural architecture in Gorenjska. All of them are linked by the Path of Cultural Heritage, which you can walk or cycle on quiet roads.

    Ajdna, Završnica and Stol

Ajdna is one of the most important Late Antique archaeological sites in the country. In the 5th and 6th centuries, during raids by northern tribes, locals took refuge on its rocky slopes, with views of the Julian Alps and Lake Bled, and the finds include the grave of a young woman buried with her jewellery inside the early Christian church. The Završnica valley is an easy-to-reach park with an adventure area and a zipline. Stronger walkers head up Stol, the highest summit of the Karawanks, with the Prešeren hut at 2,174 m. The valley lies between Bled and Jesenice, so either town makes an easy base.

Žirovnica by bike and on the Juliana Trail

Stage 3 of the Juliana Trail crosses Žirovnica on its way to Begunje, and by bike the local roads lead to Bled, Radovljica or Kranjska Gora. For something with more adrenaline, the Dolinka zipline crosses the Sava Dolinka river; there are more ideas in the guide to ziplines in Slovenia.
