3 days in Slovenia, for me, means Ljubljana on the first, Bled on the second and Postojna with Predjama on the third, sleeping all three nights in the capital. The Tourist Board puts Bled 50 km away and Postojna is just over 50, both easy by coach. Budget for tickets, as Bled Castle costs €19 and Postojna's packages run from €34.90 to €84.50.
3 days
Three days based in Ljubljana
Day 1
- morning
Ljubljana's centre on foot
The centre is closed to traffic, so you walk it. Dragon Bridge, the Triple Bridge and Plečnik's central market, then the funicular up to the castle (€19 at the desk).
- afternoon
Plečnik and the river
The Ljubljanica embankments and Trnovo Bridge are part of the Plečnik works UNESCO listed in 2021. Dinner by the water.
Day 2
- morning
Bled, the lake and the island
Bled is 50 km away. Walk round the lake, take a pletna to the island and climb the 99 steps to the church. From April to October, Vintgar Gorge is next door.
- afternoon
Castle and cream cake
Up to Bled Castle (€19, open until 8pm from April to October) and a slice of the town's cream cake before heading back to Ljubljana.
Day 3
- morning
Postojna Cave
An hour-and-a-half guided visit with the cave train and about 5 km underground. Tickets only from the official site; packages from €34.90 to €84.50.
- afternoon
Predjama Castle
The castle wedged into a 123-metre rock face for more than 800 years. €24 on its own, or as part of a package with the cave.
Times are a guide, based on the official opening hours checked for this guide.
In three days I wouldn't switch hotels. Three nights straight in Ljubljana save two check-ins and bring you back each evening to a city with life for dinner; Bled and Postojna are simple there-and-back coach trips.

What the official sites leave out
-
01 To save money
One base, smaller bill
Staying in Ljubljana throughout means you don't pay for one-night stays in pricier spots like Bled in high season. Intercity coaches reach almost every village, with tickets from the bus station or the driver.

02 My tip
Postojna tickets from the official site only
The cave's operator says it sells tickets only on its own website and warns about unofficial resellers. Adult packages run from €34.90 to €84.50 depending on what's included; Predjama Castle on its own is €24.
Postojna Cave -
03 Most beautiful
Rowing out to the island
You reach Bled Island by pletna, the traditional rowing boat, then climb 99 steps to the church. Only rowing boats and electric boats are allowed on the lake, and you can hear the difference.
Bled Island -
04 Worth the splurge
Bled Castle in the evening light
From April to October it's open from 8am to 8pm, so you can go up for the last of the light. An adult ticket is €19, and the Tourist Board calls it the oldest castle in Slovenia, first recorded in 1011.
Bled Castle
Day 1, Ljubljana on foot
Ljubljana suits a gentle first day because the centre is closed to traffic and you walk everywhere. I’d start by the river with Dragon Bridge, the Triple Bridge and the central market Plečnik designed. Mid-morning I’d take the funicular up to the castle, €19 at the desk or €17.10 online. In the afternoon, the Ljubljanica embankments and Trnovo Bridge, part of the Plečnik works UNESCO inscribed in 2021. I rank everything worth your time in things to do in Ljubljana.
Day 2, a trip to Bled and its island
Bled is 50 km from Ljubljana, according to the Tourist Board. I’d go early, walk round the lake and take a pletna across to the country’s only natural island, with its 99 steps up to the church. In the afternoon, the castle, open from 8am to 8pm between April and October, with adult tickets at €19. If you’re there between April and October, Vintgar Gorge sits in neighbouring Gorje, with 1.6 km of boardwalks over the Radovna, and its website asks you to book a time slot. The details are in Bled.
Day 3, Postojna Cave and Predjama
The third day takes you into the inland Karst. Postojna is the country’s longest show cave, 19.5 km according to the government, and the guided visit lasts an hour and a half including the cave train. Tickets are sold only on the official site, which warns about unofficial resale, and adult packages cost between €34.90 and €84.50. In the afternoon, Predjama Castle, built into a 123-metre rock face, is €24 if you visit it on its own. How to plan that day is in Postojna Cave.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Ljubljana before prices climb.
Do you need a car for three days?
A car gives you flexibility, but over three days you can do without. If you do hire one, remember that motorways and expressways need the DARS e-vignette, tied to the number plate, and a weekly one for a car is €16. If you’re unsure, I’d do these three days by coach and save the car for a longer trip into the Julian Alps.
What I leave out, and why
Three days means giving up Bohinj, the Soča Valley, the coast at Piran and the Škocjan Caves, and I don’t do it happily. If you can stretch to five, the plan changes a lot and picks up the Karst and the Julian Alps, as I explain in Slovenia in 5 days. If you prefer everything booked for you, the options are in Slovenia holidays and tours. If three is all you have, the plan above shows you what most people come for without spending the trip on the road.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Ljubljana before prices climb.

3 days in Slovenia: questions and answers
What can you see in Slovenia in 3 days?
Ljubljana, Lake Bled and Postojna Cave with Predjama Castle. They're what most visitors come for and you can do them all from the capital, one day each.
Can you do 3 days in Slovenia without a car?
Yes. The Tourist Board lists Bled, Postojna and Predjama among the easy coach trips from Ljubljana, and the centre of Ljubljana is walkable.
Where should I stay for three days in Slovenia?
In Ljubljana for all three nights. You avoid packing up and both day trips are around 50 km away. If you'd rather wake up by the lake, Bled works, but Postojna is then further.
How much will tickets cost over 3 days in Slovenia?
With both castles and the cheapest Postojna package, about €72.90 per adult: €19 for Ljubljana Castle, €19 for Bled Castle and €34.90 for Postojna, according to their official sites.
Is Postojna or Škocjan better on a short trip?
On three days Postojna fits better, because cave and Predjama Castle make one afternoon. I'd save Škocjan, a World Heritage site since 1986, for a trip of five days or more.
