Nazarje is worth a stop for Vrbovec Castle, more than 750 years old and home to Slovenia's only museum of forestry and woodcraft, and for the Franciscan monastery on the hill opposite, reached by a pilgrims' stairway of 193 steps. The village has 898 people (SURS, 1 January 2026) and sits where the Dreta meets the Savinja.
Give it two or three hours on the way to Gornji Grad or Solčava. Castle museum first, then the pilgrims' stairway up to the monastery, and if you want to see the library, contact the museum beforehand to arrange it.

01 Most beautiful
Bibles from 1584
The Franciscan monastery library, founded in 1752, holds 11th and 12th-century parchment manuscripts, Trubar's 1557 Gospels and two Dalmatin Bibles from 1584.

02 Worth the splurge
Climb the stone stairway
Since 1747 a pilgrims' stairway of 193 steps, lined with four chapels, has led up to the Church of the Annunciation, according to the municipality.

03 My tip
What the castle's name means
Vrbovec is an old Slovene word meaning among the willows, after the many that grew on the banks of the Dreta, according to the municipality.

04 Getting there
The great baroque church
Up the valley, Gornji Grad has the church of Saints Hermagoras and Fortunatus, which the tourist board calls Slovenia's largest baroque building.
Gornji Grad
What I would book for Nazarje
What’s in Vrbovec Castle?
The castle, called Altenburg in old documents, stands on a flat rock at the confluence of the two rivers. Its Slovene name means among the willows. It was built in the first half of the 12th century and took its present shape around 1480. It passed through the patriarchs of Aquileia, the Counts of Celje and the Habsburgs, and in 1615 the diocese of Ljubljana bought it. In 1944, while serving as a German headquarters, it was burned, and the Nazarje forestry administration rebuilt it between 1988 and 1992. The tourist board puts it at more than 750 years old.
Since September 2001 it has housed the forestry and woodcraft museum, unique of its kind in Slovenia according to the municipality. It tells the story of foresters, carters, sawyers and raftsmen, for whom wood was the only way to earn a living in this closed, wooded valley. The castle also holds the municipal offices, a wedding hall and a restaurant.
The monastery and its 193 steps
On Gradišče hill above the confluence stands the Franciscan monastery. Friars fleeing the Ottomans in Bosnia built it between 1632 and 1661, beside a Loreto chapel of 1625. The Church of the Annunciation has an altar of St Francis by Francesco Robba from 1750, and since 1747 a pilgrims’ stairway of 193 steps with four chapels has climbed up to it. The library, founded in 1752, keeps 11th and 12th-century parchment manuscripts, Trubar’s 1557 Gospels and two Dalmatin Bibles of 1584. Next door live the Poor Clares, who returned in 1978.
A village between two rivers
According to SURS, Nazarje has 898 residents and its municipality 2,681 on 1 January 2026, across 15 settlements. It recorded just 887 arrivals in 2025. The village sits where the Dreta meets the Savinja, in Savinjska, halfway between the plain and the Alps.

Granaries and mills nearby
At Rovt pod Menino, the Tominšek granary, dated 1686 on its door, is one of the oldest in Slovenia, with dovetail joints at the corners. Nearby is the only well-preserved mill on the Voložnica stream, where there were once 13. The church of Saints Gervasius and Protasius there is the only one in Slovenia dedicated to the two saints. And at Kokarje a pilgrimage church recalls the procession of 1460, held to beg for an end to a deadly winter.
Nazarje on a Savinja valley route
I’d see it in two or three hours, on the way to Gornji Grad and Solčava. If you like lesser-known museums in Slovenia, Vrbovec is one of the most unusual. Downriver are Mozirje, with its flower park, and Rečica ob Savinji.
