Mount Snežnik (Veliki Snežnik, 1,796 m), Notranjska's highest peak, is climbed on the classic route from Sviščaki, 5.3 km with 605 m of ascent, or from Mašun, in 3 to 3.5 hours, or Grda Draga, in 1.5 to 2. The Drago Karolin hut sits just below the top. From the bare summit you see the Kvarner Gulf, Istria, the Julian Alps and, in good weather, the Dolomites.

What I would check before going

    What I would do

I'd go up from Sviščaki, the classic and most manageable route, and allow time to get down before dark, because there are bears in these forests. And don't confuse it with Snežnik Castle, which is in another valley.

The essentials in a few lines

    The practical bit

    My notes on Mount Snežnik

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      From Triglav to Cres

From the summit you see Triglav, the Dolomites and the Carnic Alps to the west and, to the south, the whole of Istria, the Kvarner Gulf and the island of Cres.

    2. 02 My tip

      The family route

There is an easy, well-marked ascent that starts on a forest road closed to traffic, drops into the Grčovec basin and finally joins the path from the Leskova valley.

    3. 03 Getting there

      Ilirska Bistrica, the base

The three main routes start in Ilirska Bistrica municipality, which also has Prem and the Mašun forests.

A hut in a military post

The Drago Karolin hut occupies a former military observation post on the summit, which the Ilirska Bistrica mountaineering club converted and opened in 1961.

    Bookings I would make

    Routes up Mount Snežnik

The classic route starts in the mountain village of Sviščaki and is about 5.3 km long, with 605 m of ascent, through forest and then open ground. From Mašun, by the hunting lodge, a longer route of 3 to 3.5 hours one way passes the viewpoints of Puščetek and Vrh Pekla and finishes along the ridge of Mali Snežnik. It is part of the Slovenian Mountain Trail, and the tourist office rates it medium to difficult.

The shortest is the one from Grda Draga, which climbs through the Pekel gorge in 1.5 to 2 hours, steep but suitable for families with children aged 8 and over who are used to walking uphill. And there is an easy family route that starts on a forest road closed to traffic, drops into the Grčovec basin and finally joins the path from the Leskova valley.

The Drago Karolin hut and the views

Just below the summit, at 1,790 m, is the Drago Karolin hut. In 1958 the Ilirska Bistrica mountaineering club took over a former military observation post on the summit, turned it into a hut and opened it in 1961, and the extension works were finished in 1994. Down at Sviščaki, the village lodge opens Wednesday to Sunday. The tourist office considers the view from the top one of the finest in Slovenia, with the Kvarner Gulf, the island of Cres, Istria, Triglav, the Dolomites and the Karavanke.

    Bears, QR codes and fitness

Brown bears live in the Snežnik forests, so it is wise to be down before nightfall. The routes have QR codes with the full itinerary, and the climb from Mašun calls for good fitness because of the steady ascent. More ideas for the area are in Notranjska, and other peaks in mountains in Slovenia. In good weather, the tourist office notes, the view from the top even reaches the sea.

    The roof of Notranjska

Veliki Snežnik is 1,796 m high and the highest peak in Notranjska. It rises in the municipality of Ilirska Bistrica, very close to the Croatian border, surrounded by forests where the brown bear lives. Beside it stands Mali Snežnik, the Little Snežnik, whose ridge some of the routes follow. Above the tree line the path comes out onto heath and rockier ground up to the summit.

Watch out for the name, because Snežnik Castle is a different visit, in the Lož valley.
