Day trips from Ljubljana: what I would do and how to get there

    Facts checked on
    Easiest
Bled, over 30 buses a day
    Bled
    About 50 km

The day trips from Ljubljana that work are Bled (around 50 km, 58 minutes to 1 hour 20 by bus), Postojna Cave with Predjama Castle, the Škocjan Caves, Kamnik with Velika Planina and the coast at Izola or Koper. The bus station has direct services to nearly all of them; in October 2026 only Piran needed a change.

    How I would plan it
    Sergio Lepone

I'd stay three or four nights in Ljubljana and do the trips without moving hotel. Bled and Postojna are the usual pair; Velika Planina is my pick if you like walking, and Škocjan is the most striking underground.

    My key points

Before you go to Ljubljana, this

    1. 01 Getting there

      Bled, the classic bus trip

Ljubljana bus station says more than 90% of visitors to Bled come by bus from there. On Monday 19 October 2026 there were 43 departures taking 58 minutes to 1 hour 20.

      Ljubljana to Bled
    2. 02 My tip

Get off at the cave stop

Some Postojna buses stop right outside the cave park. In the bus station's journey planner, enter «Postojnska jama» as the destination.

      Ljubljana to Postojna Cave
    3. 03 Watch out

Postojna tickets from the official site only

The company running Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle warns about unofficial resellers and sells tickets on its own website. An adult package cost between €34.90 and €84.50.

      Kamnik, the quickest trip

Kamnik is 23 km away, with 84 buses on Monday 19 October 2026 and most journeys under an hour. It is the starting point for Velika Planina.

      Kamnik
    5. 05 Getting there

Piran needs a change in autumn

Since 28 September 2026 the coast service has terminated at Izola. For Piran, carry on from Izola or Koper.

      Ljubljana to Piran
    6. 06 Getting there

      If you have two weeks

With two weeks and a hire car you can do the full loop of the country, some 1,100 km from the Julian Alps to the coast and from the Karst to the east.

    My ranking, scored

Day trips from Ljubljana, in order

My own scores out of 10. They weigh what the place offers against travel time and how easy it is without a car. Opinion, not official data.

    1. Bled

Lake, island and castle an hour away, with buses roughly every half hour. The best reward for the least effort in the country.

      9.3 out of 10

    2. Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle

A train inside the cave, a 5 km guided route and the castle built into the rock face. Easy to combine in one day with a package.

      9.0 out of 10

    3. Škocjan Caves

World Heritage since 1986, an underground canyon with chambers up to 150 m high. Few buses to Divača.

      8.9 out of 10

    4. Velika Planina

Kamnik's high herdsmen's village, all wooden huts, sour milk and trnič cheese. One for walkers.

      8.7 out of 10

    5. Piran and the coast

A Venetian old town by the sea, but no direct bus in autumn 2026; better as an overnight stop than a day trip.

      8.4 out of 10

    6. Kamnik

A medieval town with castles less than an hour away, good for half a day or as the gateway to Velika Planina.

      7.9 out of 10

    What I would book

Day trip to Bled from Ljubljana

Bled is about 50 km away, and the bus station reckons more than 90% of people visiting the lake arrive by bus from there. On Monday 19 October 2026 there were 43 departures and on Saturday 24 October 35, taking 58 minutes to 1 hour 20. The stop is in the middle of town, five minutes from the water. A day is enough for the walk round the lake, the island and the castle, and the full how-to is in Ljubljana to Bled.

Postojna, Predjama and Škocjan in a day

Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle make the second big trip. There were 31 buses to Postojna on Monday 19 October and just 8 on Saturday 24 October, taking 47 minutes to 1 hour 12, and some stop right outside the cave park. Tickets are sold only on the operator’s website, which warns about unofficial resale; an adult paid €34.90 to €84.50 depending on the package, or €24 for the castle on its own. The details are in Ljubljana to Postojna Cave.

The Škocjan Caves are something else again. UNESCO listed them in 1986 for an underground canyon cut by the River Reka, with chambers up to 150 m high. The catch is getting there without a car. The bus goes to Divača, with only 7 departures on Monday 19 October and journeys of 1 hour 16 to 1 hour 40, so this is where a hire car or an organised tour pays for itself.

Kamnik and Velika Planina, mountains nearby

Kamnik is 23 km away and the quickest trip of all, with 84 buses on Monday 19 October and most journeys under an hour. The medieval town is worth half a day, but the real reason to go is Velika Planina, the herdsmen’s settlement known for its huts, sour milk and trnič cheese, reached by cable car and chairlift. If you like walking, it is the most special trip on this page for me.

In winter the Tourist Board also suggests skiing at Krvavec, 42 km away, and year-round the Ljubljana Marshes and Vrhnika or the Volčji Potok Arboretum are closer still.

Can you do the coast as a day trip?

You can, but in autumn 2026 it takes more effort. Since 28 September the coast service has terminated at Izola, with 12 departures on Monday 19 October and a little over an hour and a half on the road, and there were 33 to Koper. For Piran you change at one of the two. In summer the Tourist Board mentions frequent buses to the coast. My advice is to spend a night there rather than going there and back; there is more in Ljubljana to Piran.

Car, bus or a guided tour?

For Bled, Postojna and Kamnik the bus is all you need. A car pays off for Škocjan or for linking several Karst stops in a day, and remember that Slovenian motorways need the DARS e-vignette, which you buy online before you set off. An organised tour makes sense if you do not want to drive on the right and the bus times do not suit you. With three or four nights in the capital, I would do Bled, Postojna and a third depending on the season. If you would rather have everything arranged, first compare what the Slovenia holidays on offer include. And for a short afternoon out, Medvode, with Lake Zbilje and the old castle at Smlednik, is a quarter of an hour away by bus.

If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Liubliana for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.

    Frequently asked questions

What are the best day trips from Ljubljana?

The classic ones are Bled, Postojna Cave with Predjama Castle, the Škocjan Caves, Kamnik with Velika Planina and the coast. In winter the Tourist Board also suggests skiing at Krvavec, 42 km away.

How do I get from Ljubljana to Bled without a car?

By bus from the main bus station. On Monday 19 October 2026 there were 43 departures taking between 58 minutes and 1 hour 20, and the stop is five minutes' walk from the lake.

Can I see Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle in one day from Ljubljana?

Yes. The operator sells combined cave and castle packages, and there are direct buses to Postojna, some stopping right outside the cave park.

Is there a direct bus from Ljubljana to Piran?

Not in autumn 2026. Since 28 September the service has terminated at Izola, so you change at Izola or Koper. In summer the Tourist Board mentions frequent buses to the coast.

Is it worth hiring a car for day trips from Ljubljana?

Not for Bled, Postojna or Kamnik. For Škocjan, with few buses to Divača, or to string several Karst stops together, a hire car saves a lot of time. Remember the DARS e-vignette for the motorways.

How many days do I need in Ljubljana for day trips?

I would allow a full day per big trip. With three or four nights you can see the city and do Bled, Postojna and one more.
