The stone curtain wall and a tower of Ljubljana Castle on its hill, with green grass in front and a clear blue sky

The best things to do in Ljubljana are walking the Ljubljanica and its bridges, the old town, Plečnik's central market, the National and University Library and the castle with its viewing tower. Nearly everything is walkable and free; what you pay for is the castle, €19 with the funicular, and the museums, such as the National Gallery. One or two days is plenty.

    My view
    Sergio Lepone

I'd start with the free things, which are the best, the river, the bridges and the old town. Then I'd choose between the castle and the National Gallery depending on time, and keep Metelkova and Tivoli for day two.

    • The best of Ljubljana is the Ljubljanica river and its bridges, and it is free.
    • The castle costs €19 with the funicular and €15 without.
    • The old town, the market, the Triple Bridge and Plečnik's library complete the essentials.
    • One or two days is enough to see the city well.

    5. 05 Getting there

      If you have three days

With three days, the practical plan is to sleep in Ljubljana throughout and give one day to the city, one to Bled and one to Postojna with Predjama.

    10. National Museum of Slovenia

    11. Tivoli Park and Rožnik

459 protected hectares starting next to the National Gallery, with forest paths.

      7.8 out of 10

    12. Metelkova

The barracks occupied in 1993, now an autonomous cultural centre, best after dark.

      7.4 out of 10

Start with the river and Plečnik

If you only do one thing, walk along the Ljubljanica river from Trnovo to the Dragon Bridge. Its embankments and bridges joined the World Heritage list in 2021 along with Plečnik’s other works, and in a couple of hours you cross the Hradecky Bridge, the Cobblers’ Bridge, the Triple Bridge and the Butchers’ Bridge. The Triple Bridge in particular is where the two axes Plečnik used to organise the city intersect.

The same walk takes in the central market, with its colonnades along the water, and the National and University Library, his largest building. On weekdays the library is free, and on Saturday afternoons, for €5, you get into the great reading room.

The castle and the old town

The castle gives you the overview. The viewing tower stands 400 m above sea level, and inside are two museums, the Museum of Puppetry and one on Slovenian history. The ticket with the funicular costs €19 and without it €15, which is why I walk up from the market. Everything is in Ljubljana Castle.

Below it, Ljubljana Old Town is three long squares, Mestni trg, Stari trg and Gornji trg, with the copy of the Robba fountain outside the town hall. An hour is enough, and you will pass through it a dozen times anyway.

    Museums, if you have time

For a single museum, the National Gallery of Slovenia, with the country’s largest art collection and the original Robba fountain; it costs €10, though the first Sunday of each month is free. To understand Plečnik, his house in Trnovo, with a guided tour for €12. For prehistory, the National Museum, with the Divje babe flute and the Vače situla. The rest are in Ljubljana museums.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Liubliana on Expedia and filter by area before price.

    The green and the alternative

Tivoli Park is the gateway to 459 protected hectares, with paths up to Rožnik, and starts next to the National Gallery. Metelkova, the barracks occupied in 1993 and now an autonomous cultural centre, is the city’s other face; by day you can wander in for free, and at night there are gigs.

One or two days in Ljubljana

With one day, river, market, old town and castle, set out hour by hour in Ljubljana in a day. With two, add museums, Tivoli and Metelkova. And if you are travelling in December or summer, check the calendar, because the Christmas market and the Ljubljana Festival change the city a great deal.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Liubliana on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

Things to do in Ljubljana: questions and answers

What is the most beautiful part of Ljubljana?

For me, the Ljubljanica with Plečnik's bridges and embankments, especially the stretch between the Triple Bridge and the Dragon Bridge. From the castle tower you see it all at once.

What can you do in Ljubljana in one day?

The market, the old town, the castle, the Triple Bridge, Plečnik's library and a riverside stroll at sunset. It is set out hour by hour in my one-day itinerary.

What is free to do in Ljubljana?

The river and bridges, the old town, the central market, Tivoli Park, Metelkova by day and, on weekdays, the National Library. The National Gallery is free on the first Sunday of each month.

    Is Ljubljana Castle worth it?

Yes, for the tower and the views. I would walk up, which saves €4 against the funicular ticket, and come down a different way into the old town.

How many days do you need in Ljubljana?

One day for the essentials and two to see it properly, with museums, Tivoli and Metelkova. Add nights if you want day trips.

What is there to do in Ljubljana with kids?
