The Soča Valley follows Slovenia's emerald river from its source in Trenta down to Kanal, through Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin, alongside Triglav National Park. People come for rafting, kayaking and canyoning with one of its more than 60 agencies, for fly fishing and for the Isonzo Front. In 2025 Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin recorded more than 400,000 arrivals.

    How I would do it

I'd give the Soča Valley three days at least: Bovec as a base for the river and Trenta, and a night in Kobarid or Tolmin for the history and the food. August is packed, so for peace and quiet I'd go in June or September.

      Car-free in summer

In summer the Bovec Hop-on Hop-off and bus lines towards Trenta and Vršič run, and the Bohinj car train reaches Most na Soči.

      The Walk of Peace

The remains of the Isonzo Front can be followed along the Walk of Peace, which the Slovenian Tourist Board notes is on UNESCO's tentative list.

      Walk of Peace

Rafting, kayaking and fishing on the Soča

The Soča river takes centre stage. Rafting, kayaking and canyoning all thrive on its rapids, and the valley has more than 60 sports agencies with qualified guides who have been leading visitors safely on the river and its tributaries for years; the Soča also hosts international kayaking competitions. In the pools and calmer stretches people relax and fish, but fly fishing only, on almost 200 km of water, and marble trout can exceed 120 cm. The guide to Soča rafting explains how to choose.

The valley’s beauty also caught the eye of the makers of The Chronicles of Narnia, who filmed some of their most exciting scenes beside the Soča, the Soča Valley Tourist Board says. UNESCO declared the Julian Alps Slovenia’s first biosphere reserve.

Trenta and Bovec, the upper Soča

At the top, Trenta holds the river’s source, the Alpinum Juliana botanical garden and Dom Trenta, the park centre. Bovec is the activity capital, with the Kanin gondola up to the country’s highest ski area, Kluže fortress, the Virje waterfall and the Great Soča Gorge. To the north, Log pod Mangartom sits below the Loška stena wall.

    Kobarid and the Isonzo Front

Kobarid, below Krn, is the town of history and good food. Its museum tells the story of the Isonzo Front, where, according to the Slovenian Tourist Board, the greatest mountain battle in military history was fought, and the historical trail leads to the Kozjak waterfall. The remains of the war can be followed along the Walk of Peace, on UNESCO’s tentative list. Ana Roš cooks in Kobarid, at Hiša Franko, and the town has several highly regarded restaurants.

Tolmin, Most na Soči and Kanal

Tolmin, the largest settlement and the valley’s administrative centre, is the festival town, with Tolminator and Punk Rock Holiday at the confluence of the Soča and the Tolminka since Metaldays moved away in 2023. It has the Tolmin Gorges, the lowest entry to the national park, and up the valley, the Javorca church. Most na Soči has an emerald lake and was a large Iron Age settlement, and Kanal is a medieval town with Kontrada Square and the 1815 Neptune Fountain.

Near Tolmin lie Čadrg, an Alpine village true to its cheeses for a century, the viewpoints of the Šentvid plateau and the Baška grapa heritage railway. In Kanal, across the well-known bridge over the Soča, are the Keramost Gallery and Pečno Park, with a circular trail, a viewpoint and a mountain bike route.

Getting there and around the valley

You arrive over the Vršič pass from Kranjska Gora, which closes in winter depending on snow, over the Predil from Italy, from Nova Gorica in the south or by train on the Bohinj line to Most na Soči, with the car train. In summer, the Bovec Hop-on Hop-off and the bus lines towards Trenta and Vršič let you get around without a car, and the Juliana Trail and the Alpe Adria Trail cross the valley on foot.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Bovec before prices climb.

    Flavours of the valley

Soča cooking makes the most of mountain milk. Bovec and Tolminc cheeses have protected origin, and on the table you’ll find frika, čompe, kobariški štruklji, signed with a fingerprint, and bovški krafi. Camping Koren in Kobarid led the way in Slovenia with the EU Ecolabel, and the valley has its own quality label, Soča Valley Finest, for local products and experiences.

The calendar is busy beyond the music festivals too. The Slovenian Tourist Board lists the Soča Valley Hiking Festival, the Bovec marathon and the Soča Outdoor Festival, and in 2026 the autumn Hiking and Biking Festival ran from 4 September to 11 October with guided walks, rides, talks by Slovenian athletes and local food.
