The Kobarid Museum explains the First World War's Isonzo Front across 12 rooms in Mašera House, opened in autumn 1990. It's open every day of the year, an adult ticket costs €8, and it deserves at least an hour and a half. In 1993 it won the Council of Europe Museum Prize, and on 24-8-2026 it welcomed its two millionth visitor.

    My view on the visit

I'd give the museum at least an hour and a half, including the documentary, which comes in eleven languages. Then, if I had the energy, I'd walk the historical trail to the Kozjak waterfall; seeing the ground after the rooms changes how you understand it.

    4. 04 Getting there

On to Gorizia along the Walk of Peace

The two millionth visitor, a scout leader from Pordenone, then continued on foot with his group along the Walk of Peace to Gorizia.

What you see in the rooms

In the entrance hall of the Kobarid museum, two maps show the European battlefields and the shifting borders after the war, alongside flags, portraits of soldiers of many nationalities and headstones from the military cemeteries of the upper Soča. Three rooms on the first floor tell the story of Kobarid, at the junction of the Soča and Nadiža valleys, where in the 20th century the flag on the square changed as many as ten times.

The rest is devoted to the Isonzo Front in themed rooms. The Krn Room covers the start of fighting after Italy entered the war on 24 May 1915, and the White Room the suffering of soldiers in winter. On the second floor comes the twelfth offensive, the Battle of Kobarid, with a 27 m² relief of the upper Soča and an animated display of the advance. In the Italian cave you hear a soldier’s letter to his father, with the Friulian song Stellutis alpinis in the background, and a documentary in eleven languages rounds off the visit.

    An award-winning museum

Two years after opening it received the Valvasor Award, and in 1993 the Council of Europe Museum Prize, along with a nomination for European Museum of the Year. It has welcomed heads of state, kings and diplomats, had 52,500 visitors in 2025 and has received people from 144 countries. It has also taken its exhibitions to Sarajevo, Ypres, Prague and Vienna. Prices and seasonal hours are in the tables.

    Guided tours beyond the museum

The museum runs guided tours to the Italian charnel house on Gradič hill, opened in 1938 around the church of St Anthony and holding the remains of 7,014 Italian soldiers, and along the Kobarid Historical Trail. That 5 km circular trail links the museum, the charnel house, the ancient settlement of Tonovcov grad, remains of the Italian defence line, the Soča gorge, the Kozjak waterfall, the Napoleon Bridge and the cheesemaking museum, and takes 3 to 5 hours. There’s a shorter version of about 3 km.
