    How I would get there
    Sergio Lepone

I'd take the bus without worrying much about times, because there's one every 15 to 30 minutes most of the day. I'd pick the faster one-hour services, which leave at half past most hours, and head back in daylight rather than cutting it fine with the last bus.

    My key points

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Getting there

Every half hour or so, all day

On Monday 19 October 2026 there were 43 buses from Ljubljana to Bled, from 5.40am to 10pm, and 47 back. The bus station reckons more than 90% of Bled's visitors arrive this way.

Cheaper on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays

Integrated regional tickets are 25% off at weekends and on public holidays, and children under 6 travel free. Children aged 6 to 15 get 50% off single tickets.

    3. 03 My tip

Your ticket is not tied to one bus

On domestic routes the ticket is valid on any departure on that route that day. If you linger at the castle, just catch the next one.

      Vintgar by shuttle

Ljubljana bus station sells the return shuttle from Bled to Vintgar Gorge, which opens from April to October with a timed digital pass.

    How long the bus takes

Between 58 minutes and 1 hour 20. I checked the timetable on 17 October 2026, and on Monday 19 October there were 43 departures from 5.40am to 10pm. The slower ones make more stops; the fastest take 58 minutes or an hour dead, and there is one nearly every hour. On Saturday 24 October the number dropped to 35, so at weekends there is no need for an early start but it is worth checking times.

The stop is in central Bled, about five minutes’ walk from the lake. Coming back there are even more options, 47 departures from Bled to Ljubljana on Monday 19 October, the last at 10.30pm.

    Tickets and the weekend discount

On domestic routes the bus station sells tickets as part of Slovenia’s integrated public transport system. The ticket does not book a specific bus, only the route and date, so any departure that day is valid. If you spend longer at the castle than planned, it does not matter.

On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays single and day tickets are 25% off. A day ticket costs two singles, capped at €18 for the whole country, and groups of up to five can buy a €15 weekend ticket with unlimited travel for up to four consecutive days. Under-6s travel free and 6 to 15-year-olds pay half the single fare. The exact single fare to Bled appears in the journey planner once you pick a date.

    By car or by train

By car it is about 50 km, and the motorway requires a DARS e-vignette, which is registered to the car. With a hire car, check it already has one. Remember you are driving on the right, and that winter equipment is compulsory from 15 November to 15 March. I would only drive if I wanted to carry on to Bohinj or the Soča Valley the same day.

I am not giving train times or fares, because the Slovenian Railways website would not let me check them and I am not quoting them from memory. The bus drops you in the centre, which is what matters in Bled.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Bled on Expedia and filter by area before price.

What to do when you get to Bled

A day is enough to walk round Lake Bled, take a boat to the island and climb up to Bled Castle, which opens every day of the year and costs €19 for adults. Ljubljana bus station also sells castle tickets, an island visit with a potica menu and the return shuttle to Vintgar Gorge, open from April to October with a timed pass.

Day return or a night in Bled?

If you only want the lake and the castle, a day return is fine. If you want to add Vintgar or go on to Bohinj, I would stay a night in town; I cover that leg in Bled to Bohinj, and everything else is in the Bled guide. With children or in winter, head back in daylight and keep the last bus for emergencies.
