Where to stay in Ljubljana on a first visit has a clear answer, the centre, between the old town and the river, because it's closed to traffic and everything is walkable. If you're driving or doing coach day trips, the station area, about 400 m from the old town, is more practical. With a motorhome, Ljubljana Resort campsite is to the north by the Sava.

    My ranking, scored

The Ljubljana areas where I would stay

My own marks out of 10, weighing what you can reach on foot and how easy it is to arrive with your transport. Opinion, not an official rating.

    1. Old town and the Ljubljanica banks

Squares, bridges and castle on the doorstep. For a night or two without a car, nothing beats it.

      9.4 out of 10

    2. Centre, between the station and Prešeren Square

Minutes from the old town and the stations. Ideal if Ljubljana is your base for coach day trips.

      8.8 out of 10

    3. Trnovo and Krakovo

Plečnik's neighbourhood, with his house, by the river and a stroll from the centre. Quieter at night.

      8.2 out of 10

    4. The north, by the motorway

Business and shopping district with chain hotels such as the Radisson Blu Plaza, handy by car or for events at Stožice.

      7.0 out of 10

    5. Ljubljana Resort campsite

133 pitches and mobile homes beside the Sava in the north. For tents and motorhomes.

      7.0 out of 10

Who will enjoy it and who will not

    Yes, if…

    • First-time visitors who want to walk everywhere
    • Anyone doing coach day trips, from the station area

    Better not, if…

    • Drivers who need on-site parking in the old town
    • Anyone after a resort-style hotel

I'd stay as close to the Ljubljanica as possible. The city is small, but what makes it special is stepping out of the hotel and being on the river within a minute, especially at night. If you're driving, put a garage first even if it means being further out.

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Most beautiful

By the river, the full experience

Staying in the old town or on the banks of the Ljubljanica puts Plečnik's bridges, the castle and the market a few steps away, and the city at night at your door.

    2. 02 Getting there

Near the station, for day trips

The bus station runs more than 20 departures a day to Bled and buses to Postojna. Hotels such as City Hotel are around 400 m away, about five minutes on foot.

    3. 03 My tip

      Driving? Check the garage first

The centre is closed to traffic and hotel parking is usually extra. If yours has none, park and ride on the edge of town costs €1.30 a day with two bus tickets.

    4. 04 To save money

      Camping by the Sava

Ljubljana Resort campsite, on the city's northern edge, has 133 pitches, mobile homes and the Laguna pool next door, according to the tourist board. The cheapest option with a tent or motorhome.

    5. 05 Getting there

      Marathon weekend

The Ljubljana Marathon is run in October, and it pays to book early for that weekend. The 2026 race was on 17 and 18 October.

      Ljubljana Marathon

Old town and river, the best area

In the old town or along the Ljubljanica. From there Plečnik’s bridges, the market, Prešeren Square and the castle are a few steps away, and you have the city at night, when it looks its best, right outside. The catch is the car, because the historic centre is closed to traffic and you will have to leave it in a garage on the edge or at park and ride. I explain how in parking in Ljubljana.

By the station, the practical area

If the capital is your base, the area between the station and Prešeren Square makes sense. The bus station runs more than 20 daily departures to Bled and buses that stop outside Postojna Cave, and from hotels such as City Hotel Ljubljana it is about five minutes on foot. The InterContinental is also nearby, a glass tower with boardrooms on the 19th floor and a rooftop restaurant, according to its tourist board listing. Less charm than the river, but it saves time every morning.

Trnovo and Krakovo, the quieter side

South of the centre, along the river, Trnovo and Krakovo are Jože Plečnik’s home ground, where he settled in 1921, with his house museum, the Trnovo Bridge and the Trnovski pristan embankment. They are a stroll from the old town and quieter at night. For a second visit or a couple’s break, I like them a lot.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Ljubljana before prices climb.

The north and the chain hotels

To the north, the business and shopping district has chain hotels such as the Radisson Blu Plaza, by the motorway and near Stožice stadium, convenient if you are driving or going to an event. The tourist board also highlights Four Points by Sheraton, the first hotel in Slovenia with BREEAM certification. For a visitor who wants to wander, I would not choose the north.

Among newer openings, the tourist board points to Hotel Adore, a family-run boutique hotel with a ground-floor bistro and free parking, a combination that is rare in the capital. And if sustainability matters to you, look out for the Slovenia Green label, which the tourist board uses to flag accommodation with certified green practices.

    Camping and motorhomes in Ljubljana

Ljubljana Resort campsite is on the city’s northern edge beside the Sava, with 133 pitches, mobile homes and the Laguna pool next door. A few kilometres away, Camp Smlednik is also by the river, near Škofja Loka and Kranj. For motorhomes, P+R Stanežiče has 15 bays, according to the city.

If you are staying several nights and want to plan outings, have a look at day trips from Ljubljana, and for food near your hotel, see where to eat in Ljubljana.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Ljubljana and choose by the reviews.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Ljubljana before prices climb.
