When to go to Montenegro, depending on what you want to do
Montenegro's National Tourism Organisation puts the best time to visit between May and October, and recommends late spring and early autumn to dodge the heat and the crowds. For the beach, June to September; for rafting on the Tara, spring with the snowmelt; for snow, January to March; and for festivals, February and March and May to September.

The National Tourism Organisation recommends May to October.
Beaches from June to September; July and August are the busiest.
Tara rafting from April to October, best in spring.
Snow in the north from January to March.
If I could only pick one month, it would be September. The sea is still inviting, the coast empties after August, the mountains are open and the afternoons are no longer an oven. June comes a close second.

What I would keep in mind
01 Most beautiful
Late spring and early autumn
The National Tourism Organisation rates these two windows as the best time to arrive, with pleasant temperatures, quieter beaches and weather for almost any outdoor activity.
The coast takes most of its visitors in July and August, and the tourist board itself suggests those months for a quiet break in the northern mountains instead.
According to the National Tourism Organisation, the five national parks are at their best from May to October, when their ecosystems are in full swing.
October sees the end of Tara rafting and of Budva's sea border crossing, which closes on the 30th, yet the coast still averages 16.6°C and Kotor drops to 72 cruise calls on the 2026 list.
Tivat rounds off the year with the Boka Marathon, from 11 to 13 December 2026, and four nights of New Year concerts on the Pine promenade, according to its tourist board.
The short answer is May to October, and that’s not just me, it’s the National Tourism Organisation. But Montenegro packs a coast, a plain and high mountains into very few miles, and the right time depends on what you’ve come for. Here it is by season and by activity, with the official figures from Montenegro weather alongside.
What the tourist board says
The National Tourism Organisation puts the ideal window at May to October, with plenty of sunny days and an average high that, by its own reckoning, runs from about 19°C in May to 29°C in August. It adds two tips I agree with. The best time to arrive is late spring or early autumn, when it isn’t too hot, you can still use the beaches and you avoid the crowds. And since the coast takes most of its visitors in July and August, it suggests spending those months relaxing in the northern mountains.
Spring, March to May
Montenegro weather in March still means winter up north and a quiet, rainy time on the coast. By April Herceg Novi averages around 13.7°C, and my favourite part begins, the rivers. The tourist board gives Tara rafting a season from April to October, with spring the best time thanks to the snowmelt, and river kayaking only in April, May and June. May is another story, averaging 18°C on the coast, with hiking in full swing and festivals such as Perast’s on 1 and 15 May and Independence Day on the 21st.
This is beach season. In July Herceg Novi averages 24.3°C, with 343 hours of sun and just six rainy days, but Podgorica’s average high tops 31°C and hit 41.1°C in 2024. July and August bring the crowds to the coast, and June is the calmer version. I go into detail in Montenegro in summer.
Autumn, September to November
September is my favourite month. The coast still averages 20.7°C, the tourist board notes it brings a string of cultural and sporting events across the country, and the mountains are still open. October is mild but rainier, and plenty of seasonal things close, such as Budva’s maritime border crossing, which operates from 1 May to 30 October. November is the coast’s wettest month, averaging 256 mm in Herceg Novi. Birdwatchers should note that the Tivat tourist board recommends the Solila salt flats from February to the end of April, as migrants return, and marks the first weekend of October as European Birdwatching Day.
The coast is mild, averaging around 8°C in January, but very wet. Up north, snow takes over, and the tourist board suggests January to March for winter sports, with an average snow cover of 120 days a year at its resorts. For skiing in Montenegro, nobody had announced the 2026-27 season dates by the time I wrote this. There’s more in Montenegro in winter. For festivals, the tourist board sums up that February and March and May to September host the best of them, starting with Herceg Novi’s Mimosa Festival and Kotor’s carnival.
Festivals worth timing a trip around
If you like to travel for an event, these are the dates with official backing. February brings the Mimosa Festival in Herceg Novi and Kotor’s winter carnival, which ran from 6 to 15 February in 2026. In March the tourist board points to the camellia exhibition in Kotor, and in May to the Budva carnival. June and July open the season of music festivals on the coast, with Herceg Novi’s Days of Music from 10 to 20 July. August has Boka Night in Kotor, on the third Saturday, and the Guitar Art Summer Fest in Herceg Novi from 15 to 20 August. In 2026 the Ocean Lava triathlon took place on the Bay of Kotor on 11 October.
It depends on the season, but some things are constant. Gov.uk reminds you to carry photo ID at all times, as police can fine you without it, and your passport is what gets you in. In summer, sun protection, water and shoes for pebbles, since many beaches are shingle; gov.uk also warns of wildfire risk from April to October. In spring and autumn, layers and a waterproof. And if you’re heading north in winter, proper mountain clothing. The electricity supply is 220 V and 50 Hz, according to the National Tourism Organisation.
