The rocky shoreline of the Luštica peninsula, with blue sea and a hillside covered in scrub and yellow flowers

September is, for me, the best month to visit Montenegro. Herceg Novi averages 20.7°C, with highs of 26.1°C, about 250 hours of sunshine and 8 rainy days, and days of 30°C drop to around 3. The coast eases off after August, Tivat fills its Pine promenade with music and the National Tourism Organisation singles out September for cultural and sporting events.

    • Herceg Novi averages 20.7°C, with 26.1°C highs and about 250 hours of sun.
    • Only around 3 days of 30°C on the coast; rain starts to pick up.
    • Festivals in Tivat (klapa singing, world music) and comics in Herceg Novi.
    • Still 82 cruise calls in Kotor, but a calmer coast than in August.

If I had to pick one month for Montenegro, it would be September, and the first fortnight in particular. The sea is still inviting, you can hike in the mountains without baking on the way down, and you'll find a room on the coast without booking months ahead.

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Most beautiful

World music on the Pine promenade

From 11 to 13 September 2026 Tivat held its Tivat World Music Festival on the Pine promenade, according to the town tourist board's events calendar.

      Still plenty of cruise ships

Luka Kotor's 2026 schedule listed 82 cruise calls in September, almost as many as August. Check the port's list and save Kotor old town for a day with one ship or none.

A comic festival in Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi's comic festival starts on the first Friday of September and runs for six days. Illustrator Nikola Ćurčin founded it in 2007 to stretch the season, according to Herceg Fest.

    4. 04 Worth the splurge

Luštica while the water's still good

With highs of 26°C and only about 3 days of 30°C in Herceg Novi, September is when I'd head for the coves of the Luštica peninsula, minus the summer crowds.

    What I would book

If I could recommend just one month for Montenegro, it would be September. It keeps nearly everything that’s good about summer, the sea, the terraces, the open mountains, and loses the worst of it, the crowds and the midday heat. If you can travel once the school holidays are over, this is the month I would aim for, though the cruise season in Kotor is still in full swing.

    Late-summer warmth

The 1961-1990 normals give Herceg Novi a September average of 20.7°C, with highs of 26.1°C and nights of 16.6°C. There are around 20 days of 25°C or more, but only 3 of 30°C, and warm nights above 20°C all but vanish. Sunshine dips to around 250 hours, which is still plenty. Bar sits at 20.4°C, and the Tivat airport climatography gives 20.9°C for 2013-2022, with about 26°C in the early afternoon. September 2024 ran warmer, at 21.3°C in Herceg Novi with an absolute maximum of 36.2°C. My take is that you’ll still live in your swimming kit, but a light layer starts to earn its place in the evening.

    The rain comes back

This is when the coast starts to get wet again. Herceg Novi averages about 151 mm over 8 days, three times July’s total, and Bar about 106 mm over 7. Down south Ulcinj holds out best, with a 21.2°C average, about 256 hours of sunshine and only 85 mm. Inland, Cetinje already collects 191 mm, a taste of what November brings there. Showers rarely ruin a week, although in September 2024 it rained on 12 days in Herceg Novi and 14 in Podgorica. If the trip is all about the beach, aim for the first fortnight, and note that the southern coast stays drier than the bay.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Tivat on Expedia and filter by area before price.

    Festivals around the bay

According to the National Tourism Organisation, September is packed with cultural and sports events nationwide, and the bay is no exception. In 2026 the Krtoli Sailing Week regatta ran until the 6th, a gathering of klapa groups, the a cappella singing of the Adriatic coast, took place on the islet of Gospa od Milosti on the 5th, and from the 11th to the 13th Tivat filled its Pine promenade with world music. Herceg Novi’s comic festival starts on the first Friday of September and lasts six days. Kotor’s tourist board lists X-Waters Montenegro on 27 September, and the National Tourism Organisation mentions a kayak festival in September on its page about kayaking in Montenegro. The NTO also includes 20 September, Ecological State Day, in its list of holidays.

    Cruise ships and crowds

The beaches calm down once August is over, but Kotor less so. Luka Kotor’s 2026 schedule had 82 cruise calls in September, with some days seeing up to six ships, so the August trick still applies. Before heading into town, check the list for the Kotor cruise port. The same schedule shows the Dubrovnik-Kotor-Dubrovnik boat service running until 30 September, twice a week.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Tivat on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

    The mountains at their best

Autumn reaches the north sooner. Kolašin averages 11.9°C, with highs of 20.2°C and lows of 6.2°C, and Žabljak 10.1°C, with the odd frost. For walking I think it’s the best time of year, mild days, clear light and empty trails. It does rain on 10 or 11 days a month up there, though, so check the forecast every morning.

    Either side of September

Compared with Montenegro weather in August, you gain space and lose very little good weather. October is a different story, with more rain and the season winding down; I cover it in Montenegro weather in October, and the whole year in the best time to visit Montenegro.
