- Bar has over 46 km of coast and around twenty beaches totalling roughly 9 km.
- The longest are Sutomore, sandy, and the Pearl Coast at Čanj, pebbly, at 1,200 metres each.
- Queen's Beach and Crvena stijena are only practical by boat.
- Ratac is the municipality's naturist beach, and Lake Skadar has two sandy ones.
With only one beach day in Bar, I'd spend it on a boat, taking in Queen's Beach and Crvena stijena. For a longer stay I'd base myself in Čanj or Utjeha and leave Sutomore to anyone after late nights.
Before you go
What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
Queen's Beach, Queen Milena's favourite
Tucked into Pećin bay near Čanj, closed in by hills and rock, it can only be reached by sea. The Bar tourist board says many consider it the most beautiful on the Montenegrin coast.
Čanj -
02 My tip
A Roman-era temple under the water at Maljevik
In 2009 the remains of a temple from the 2nd to 4th centuries were found in Maljevik bay, between Čanj and Sutomore, about two metres down. On a calm day you can see them from the surface.
-
03 To save money
Plenty of free parking
Topolica, Žukotrlica, Veliki pijesak, Maljevik, Štrbine and Olive Bay all list free parking, according to the Bar tourist board. On the coast in summer, that's no small thing.

04 Getting there
Montenegro's beaches compared
If you're torn between Bar, Budva, Ulcinj and the Bay of Kotor, I've compared the best beaches across Montenegro by type and area.

What I would book
My ranking, scored
The best beaches in Bar municipality
My own order, scored out of 10, weighing the water, the setting and the effort of getting there. The scores are my opinion; the facts about each beach come from the Bar tourist board.

Queen's Beach (Kraljičina plaža)
Hidden in Pećin bay between hills and rock, reachable only by sea. It has a jetty for the boats and sunbeds, and was Queen Milena's favourite holiday spot.
9.0 out of 10
-
Crvena stijena
The red-rock cove behind Volujica hill, naturally shaded and almost empty. No facilities, and realistically one for a boat trip.
8.4 out of 10
-
Olive Bay, Utjeha
Two hundred metres with an old olive grove behind it, rated by the tourist board among the most beautiful beaches in the region.
8.2 out of 10
-
Pearl Coast, Čanj
Biserna obala, 1,200 metres of pebbles in an enclosed bay. Calmer than Sutomore, with the boat to Queen's Beach on the doorstep.
7.9 out of 10
-
Hladna uvala
A rocky cove among the olive groves by Utjeha, with very clear water and kayaks for the paddle to Kristalna beach.
7.6 out of 10
-
Sutomore beach
The best equipped, 1,200 metres of sand with every facility. It loses marks for the August crowds and the party crowd.
7.3 out of 10
-
Maljevik
Pebbles, very clean water and a sunken ancient temple two metres down. My pick for a mask and snorkel.
7.2 out of 10
Bar isn’t known as a beach destination, and that’s partly the town’s own doing, as it’s a working port before it’s a resort. But the municipality has more than 46 km of coastline and around twenty beaches which, according to its tourist board, add up to about nine kilometres. I’ve listed them north to south in the order you’d come across them by car, and I’ve added the two on the lake, because they belong to Bar too.
In town, Topolica and Žukotrlica
The town beach is Topolica, half a kilometre of pebbles stretching between the marina and the Željeznica river. The tourist board pitches it as one of the easiest to get to, with King Nikola’s promenade, the museum, a children’s playground and water sports alongside. Žukotrlica, also in town, stretches for 1,000 metres and 55,000 m² of pebbles, and its name has a story behind it. Spanish broom, žukva locally, used to be rubbed in the sea here to soften it for weaving.
Between Bar and Sutomore
South of the port, behind Volujica hill, is Crvena stijena, a red-rock cove best visited by boat. Heading north, Cape Ratac shelters the municipality’s naturist beach, split in two by the headland and screened from the road by pine trees, with the ruins of the 11th-century Benedictine monastery of the Virgin Mary of Ratac at the tip. Next come Red Beach, a 50-metre bay of reddish sand with a legend about sea nymphs combing their hair on the cliff, and Štrbine, 100 metres long and a good place for sunset.

Sutomore and Čanj, the big two
The beach at Sutomore is 1,200 metres long and covers 56,000 m² of sand that the tourist board credits with easing rheumatism. It’s the best equipped and the busiest, with bars, shops and partying late into the night. In the same resort, Golden Coast, 240 metres long, is the Inex hotel’s sandy beach for its guests. Between Sutomore and Čanj lies Maljevik, pebbly with very clean water, where the remains of an ancient temple turned up two metres down in 2009. At Čanj, the Pearl Coast adds another 1,200 metres of pebbles, with boats to Queen’s Beach in Pećin bay, which you can only reach by sea.
South to Dobra Voda and Utjeha
Beyond the town, the Bar Riviera has Veliki pijesak in Dobra Voda, 380 metres long and often wavy as it faces the open sea; Olive Bay at Utjeha, 200 metres with an olive grove behind; Paljuškovo, pebbles and sand; and Hladna uvala, a rocky cove for swimming well away from it all.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Sutomore on GetYourGuide.
And on Lake Skadar
The municipality also reaches Lake Skadar, with Murići, 560 metres long, which the tourist board rates the largest and most beautiful sandy beach on the lake shore, and Pješačac, a tiny 500 m² beach below Godinje reached only by a footpath, looking out to the island of Grmožur. If you’re picking dates, the Bar tourist board puts the swimming season between mid-May and mid-October, with the sea averaging 23.2 °C in July.
