Two bases, Kotor and Budva
Five days in Montenegro, from the bay to Lake Skadar
Five days covers the Bay of Kotor, Lovćen, Cetinje, the Budva Riviera and Lake Skadar. My plan uses two bases, three nights in Kotor and two in Budva or Bar. Distances are short, from 14 km between Kotor and Perast to about 48 km from Kotor to Cetinje, and the last day can finish near Podgorica airport.

- Five days covers the coast, Lovćen, Cetinje and Lake Skadar.
- Two bases, three nights in Kotor and two in Budva or Bar.
- Lovćen costs €3 and Lake Skadar €5 to enter.
- The north and Durmitor need a longer trip.
With five days I'd hire a car from day three at least. Cetinje via Lovćen and Lake Skadar are far better at your own pace, stopping at viewpoints, than on bus timetables.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
From the sea to Njegoš's mausoleum
The mausoleum sits on Jezerski vrh, on Lovćen. On clear days, says National Parks, you can see much of the country and as far as Albania and Croatia.
Lovćen National Park -
02 Most beautiful
Lake Skadar by boat
Boats leave Virpazar's pier for the lake, a national park since 1983 and home to some 280 bird species.
Virpazar -
03 My tip
Finish near Podgorica airport
Flying home from Podgorica, Lake Skadar makes the perfect last day. Virpazar is about 31 km from the capital.
Podgorica Airport -
04 Getting there
If you only have three days
Drop Lake Skadar and Cetinje and stay in Kotor all three nights. The bay, the cable car up Lovćen and Budva fit comfortably into my short itinerary.
Montenegro in three days
What I would book
5 days
Five days of coast, Cetinje and the lake
- Day 1
Kotor and its walls
Arrive at Tivat, 8 km from Kotor. Afternoon in the old town and up the walls to St John's fortress, 300 m above the sea.
- Day 2
Perast and the bay
Perast, about 14 km away, with St Nicholas and the islands. With time to spare, carry on round the shore to Herceg Novi, about 31 km from Kotor.
- Day 3
Lovćen, Njeguši and Cetinje
Up Lovćen by cable car or car, the Njegoš mausoleum, then down through Njeguši to Cetinje, about 48 km from Kotor, for the monastery and King Nikola's palace.
- Day 4
Budva and Sveti Stefan
Cetinje to Budva is about 27 km. Old town and Citadel, then Sveti Stefan from the beach in the afternoon, 9 km away by local bus.
- Day 5
Lake Skadar
Budva to Bar and on to Virpazar on the lake shore. A boat in the morning and, if you're flying from Podgorica, the airport in the afternoon.
Times are a guide, based on the official opening hours checked for this guide.
With five days you can leave the coast and see why Montenegro is more than beaches. My plan combines the Bay of Kotor, Lovćen and Cetinje, the Budva Riviera and Lake Skadar, with just two changes of hotel. If you can, hire a car from day three.
Days 1 and 2, Kotor and Perast
Your flight lands at Tivat, 8 km from Kotor. Give the first afternoon to the old town, then climb the walls to St John’s, perched 300 m up above the rooftops. Day two is Perast, some 14 km round the shore, with St Nicholas and the two islets facing it. With the afternoon free, carry on round the shore to Herceg Novi, about 31 km from Kotor, with its fortresses. Your base is covered in Kotor. If you’d rather not drive at all on these first two days, Kotor and Perast are close enough for a taxi with the fare agreed in advance.
Day 3, Lovćen and Cetinje
My favourite day of the trip. Go up Lovćen, by cable car from Dub or by car, and visit the Njegoš mausoleum on Jezerski vrh. National Parks says that when the sky is clear the view from the top takes in much of Montenegro and parts of Albania, Herzegovina and Croatia, and park entry is €3. Then drop down through Njeguši, the village of the Petrović dynasty, to Cetinje, once the royal capital and about 48 km from Kotor. There you’ll find the monastery, the Biljarda with its relief map of Montenegro, and King Nikola’s palace. More in Lovćen and Cetinje.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Budva on Expedia and filter by area before price.
Day 4, Budva and Sveti Stefan
Cetinje to Budva is about 27 km. Walk the old town and the Citadel in the morning, then take the local bus to Sveti Stefan, about 9 km, to see it from the beach. Stay in Budva or, for something quieter, carry on to Bar, which the National Tourism Organisation describes as having reasonably priced accommodation. From Bar, the next day already starts beside the lake.
Day 5, Lake Skadar
Budva to Bar is about 38 km, and Bar to Virpazar on the lake shore about 23. Protected as a national park since 1983, the lake supports some 280 bird species according to the National Tourism Organisation, including the Dalmatian pelican. Entry is €5, and boats leave from Virpazar. If you’re flying home from Podgorica, the airport is just over half an hour from the lake. I’d take an early boat with the whole day ahead and leave the afternoon for the transfer. Details are in Lake Skadar.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Budva and pick one that fits your day.
If you’ve one more day
With six days, I’d add Ostrog on the way north or a night in Žabljak, though Durmitor deserves more time. For that, see Montenegro in a week.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Budva on Booking.com and filter by area before price.
Perast's waterfront with wooden boats, stone houses and the bell tower of St Nicholas in front of the mountains of the bay
The small harbour at Virpazar on Lake Skadar, with excursion boats moored along the channel and mountains behind
Sveti Stefan joined to the shore by a sandy isthmus, its stone houses and red roofs ringed by turquoise water

Frequently asked questions
Is 5 days enough for Montenegro?
For the coast and the centre, yes. For the north, with Durmitor and Biogradska Gora, you'd want two or three more days; see the one-week itinerary.
What's the best 5-day Montenegro itinerary?
Kotor and its walls, Perast, Lovćen and the Njegoš mausoleum, Cetinje, Budva with Sveti Stefan, and Lake Skadar from Virpazar, with two bases, Kotor and Budva.
Do I need a car for 5 days in Montenegro?
It isn't essential, but it helps a lot for Lovćen, Cetinje and Lake Skadar. I'd hire one from day three, remembering it's right-hand traffic.
How much are the park fees on this itinerary?
Lovćen costs €3 and Lake Skadar €5 per adult per day, according to National Parks. The Kotor cable car, if you use it, is €20 return off-season.
Can I add Albania to a 5-day Montenegro trip?
You can cross from the south, but in five days I wouldn't, because you'd end up rushing both countries.
